i'm so glad the dash is getting into magician's apprentice by tamsyn muir. it changed my life. control over mind and food and clothes are all violation of the body. this is what i mean when i tongue-and-cheek refer to compelling depictions of sexual violence as having a deleuzian quality. organs and the machines of the organs all part of this control and coercion. john's inculcation is an unregulated mirror of the scholastic setting which cherry seldom but meaningfully describes and thus reflects that meaningfully. the discourse of the text says what is not said. at the same time, what is said draws your eye to what is covered by shadow the shadow of what is said. the fear of the alterous outsider—the "rapists and serial killers" to which john gestures—launders this isolation. the only outsider that tries to hurt cherry is a careless driver. john uses the change this traumatic incident provokes to open a door. other things are hidden behind other doors. i don't think i can speak highly enough of this story.
