Food for thought: Jesus didn't say a word about needing to die before we could live forever, as we usually assume with verses like this one. When presented with a man he knew only believed after seeing, Jesus didn't tell him his faith wasn't sufficient to receive what he wanted, and then walk away. Yet how many times do we expect God to treat us that way? Far from it, Jesus did just the opposite. He gave the man his word that the boy would live. No strings attached, no "if you believe". Just "I promise you....". Vulnerability unlocks this verse. It's every bit as much for the "strong ones" that try to carry their own hardships as well as others'. When you don't invite someone else into your heartache, you skirt this entreaty every bit as much as those who don't care for or help others. Being vulnerable is risky business. I love how our God sets us up for success; when we are weak, He makes sure we get the sunlight and support we need to thrive. (This is definitely a radical translation of this verse, yet it captures the overall theme of John: revealing the heart of God. Live in peace. Not "make sure others are peaceful", but a direct instruction to the reader to take personal responsibility for themselves and how they respond to others.
