For as long as I shall live, my dear Kate. Kate gripped the reins harder, a bright, brief smile upon her face. She couldn’t help the answering blush high upon her cheeks at the fond, familiar tone in Henry’s voice. All the hopes, the dreams she’d had since their betrothal were held tightly against the roof of her mouth, wind stealing her breath. Henry looked so very rumpled in this frigid wind, Kate couldn’t help but laugh.
“I would say…” she tugged Corveau to a stop, “Attrape-moi si tu peux!” Kate cracked the reigns sharply, urging Corveau into an immediate gallop, rearing up.
Henry erupts in jovial laughter at that challenge. Catch her he would. He gave a squeeze to the gelding beneath him and took off in a gallop after her. He lost sight of her over a hill and by the time he ascended it she was a small figure on the horizon. Henry stops his horse for a moment, considering the shortcuts he knows, perhaps the one through the woods will put him closer.
He veers to the left and disappears into the tree line to the east of the castle.
Kate slows her steed to a slow canter as she peers back to see... Nothing. No Henry, no cape can be seen. Where could he have gone? Her eyes narrow, a smile quirking the corner of her mouth. What fun this game is! A swift kick of her heels into Corveau's side and she rears up, breath caught as they move swift as the very wind from the North. She would continue up this path, yes, until the bridge, where there was but one vantage point.

Katherine shook the hair from her face as a hollow east wind made her shiver beneath layers of woolen cloak. Beneath her Corveau nickered softly, breathing hard from his nostrils. She gave him an affectionate kiss to his ear and smiled sweetly to Henry. “I have ridden every morning, mon roi, since I was just a girl- until the nurse begged me indoors!” She maneuvered her massive black stallion in a wide circle around him, eyeing him carefully. “I wonder how long I could keep you on your toes…” She didn’t voice the nagging thought in her head- that she was not exciting which to keep his interest for more than their courtship.
An eternity, he hopes.
“For as long as I shall live, my dear Kate. I could search the world and never find a woman with allure like yours. You treat me as a man, not a King. I am myself with you and that has more value to me than any dowry or promised kingdom.” He watches her canter around him, his cheeks flushed red from the sharp wind.
“What would you say to a rematch?”

“You put my riding to shame, dear Kate.” Henry chuckles as he catches up to Katherine’s horse. “I am learning new and wonderful things about you every day, you keep me on my toes.”

“I was feeling restless.” Cate pulled her robe around her. “Did I wake you?” Hoping he wouldn’t notice how angry and red the rune was on her wrist. Something was happening but she knew not what.
“You’re absence woke me.” His gaze narrowed in the dark Loki lifted her legs and place then in his lap as he sat. “Something is wrong…you can tell me or we can argue. I’d prefer the gentle option.”
She frowned, feeling his scolding as much as the burn upon her wrist. With a shaking hand, she drew back the sleeve. "It isn't just hurting when you're gone from my side now... It hurts at strange times..." Cate's voice was fearful, though soft. "Am I being punished?" After Henry, perhaps she was not meant to be with another in such a way.
“The bed is too empty. Do you want to tell me why you left it?”

Wiping at her eyes, the Queen nodded, letting him care for her as he needed to. “I will leave you to your thoughts and join you for our meal.” Cate cupped his stubbled cheek. “Wake me before the sun reaches the horizon.”
“You have my word. Two hours rest and I will wake you and we will sup together and put this month’s disappointments behind us. You have more to share I am sure and I know John and Humphrey are anxious to see you too.”
Catherine took her leave, settling onto their bed, murmuring to her belly as she began to unbraid her hair. "Little one, I promise that I will not raise you like Mamere raised me... Or my brother. I will take care of you and your father... However much he allows me to." She did fret, Cate admitted that much openly. But now she had much reason to.
Pulling the covers up and over her shoulder, she fell into a restless sleep.
Catherine clung to him, inhaling his scent and letting it calm her. Hiccuping sobs soon becoming whimpers. One hand cradled their unborn son, rubbing back and forth over the velvet of her dress. Already she could feel the lie that needed to be said, for the ease of the moment- one look to him and she knew she would see it plainly on his face. So she closed her eyes and wished for everything to wait for an age. Let my child have his father, she prayed silently.
Her stilling in his arms and the gentleness of their son’s moving in her womb was enough for him, for an eternity he could remain with her just like this and want for nothing. But the crown didn’t allow for such peace to last longer than a moment. The Dauphin would not yield no matter how he prayed and he would be called to war again.
“You’re tired,” he surmised, a bit late and with that crooked smile, “you should lie down before we sup. You’ll feel better.”
