I love the atmosphere. The sound of Big Ben, the fog, the dialogue...😭
Shinichi being devoted to Ran since day one
(as it turns out, i have many more thoughts. so if you want to bare with me, here’s more rambling <3)
one of the reasons why shinran has always drawn my attention, as i sad in my previous post, is shinichi’s confidence and awareness of his feelings for ran. which is not the case for many male characters in some manga.
this why i always loved how aoyama made sure that the reader was always aware who the main love interest is. i always loved his decision to make shinichi be in love with ran since the very beginning of the story and even before.
as a reader, is way more fun to see how the relationship develops throughout the story than seeing the main ship get together the last minutes of the manga and see no development or moments between the two characters. i’m sorry but it’s boring for me.
as an author he even admitted through shinichi that he will never let their love story remain incomplete, this as been discussed many times, but i don’t take it for granted.
he also made shinichi affirm and declare his love for ran in hundreds different ways
like staying in japan for her is one thing. the first time when he was 14 and his parents decided to go to america and when he became conan. he could’ve easily asked his dad for help and find another way to solve his case in america. but he insisted to stay in japan bc he couldn’t leave ran.
i mean he admitted that she’s the most important person to him and his dream.
let’s never forget that this boy brought ran to the place his dad proposed to his mother, for “good luck”.
which, in my opinion, is insane bc as normal guy -which shinichi isn’t- why are you bringing your crush to such an expensive restaurant if you’re not completely obsessed with her -which shinichi is- this shows yet again how SERIOUS he takes his relationship with ran.
mind you he just “came back” in his body too, he wasted no time 😭
and in part i think that’s because in the beginning he was pretty unsure and not aware of the fact that ran reciprocated his feelings.
once he knew that he could actually have a chance in being with ran that he did EVERYTHING to let her know he loved her and that he would comeback to her.
and i’m happy for him bc this is all he ever dreamed about since he was four 🥲
—
i don’t want this to be to messy, i hope it’s cohesive and coherent enough 😭 pls let me know if you have some advice or if you think it’s good enough. as always feel free to tell me what you think (especially about them, i always love to see more takes about them 🙂↕️)

Hey! So this is a request I did for @icedcoffeeanyone. This is not the next chapter for Interview Mania nor does it have anything to do with that fic. It is however extremely long and is of course for ShinRan because what else am I going to write about LOL I appreciate anybody that is still waiting for the next chapter of IM however. I am still working on it. I don’t know when it will be updated but please be patient with me a little longer. I am going on a trip for a week and leaving Wednesday. So I am trying my best to get as much finished as I can before I leave since I know I won’t be able to write while I am gone. Just know I haven’t forgotten it and am still very much working on it! :) In the meantime, I wanted to leave ya’ll with something. This is a oneshot and like said above, extremely long. The above link is to my AO3 and you can find it on fanfiction here. The continued support and feedback means a lot to me, so thank you! Please take a look at the A/N at the beginning of the chapter. There are some things I wanted to warn about before reading :)
Have you read the most AWESOME ShinRan lemon out there? (Calling all ShinRan pervs!)
For All Time (1/3)
So guys, finally after five months, I had finished writing and tweaking the story a wonderful person (who shall remain nameless) commissioned me and @cherelleholmes to do a mini collaboration. Hers is the art and mine is the story. This was way back March and the plot is ShinRan life after the Conan Fiasco. Be warned that this is M-Rated and a bit longer than what I used to write. I guess this is longer than my Red and White one shot. Still, I had enjoyed writing this including the crazy conversations with the… er… commissioner (?). Anyway, this is part one of three.
Hope y’all will enjoy this!

It wasn’t a fairy tale. It wasn’t a perfect love story. In a way, it was still a whirlwind romance. But the most important thing for them was despite what they’d been through, they were still together.
The revelation of Edogawa Conan forced a crack in their relationship. It cost Shinichi, Ran’s trust as it carefully broke into pieces in his hands. He thought and seriously believed that this would be their end. He had done something irreparable. And there was no one to blame but himself.
But Ran would always prove to him, and to everyone, that she was an angel. A strong and forgiving one. It takes immense courage to forgive someone who had hurt you so badly, practically breaking you. Even more so when you continue to love them.
It was the epitome of Ran and Shinichi didn’t know whether to cry or to laugh. Maybe he did both. She just proved to him that he didn’t deserve her. But Ran deserved to be happy, and he just happened to be an integral part of her happiness.
All of the people that had known what happened said he was the luckiest guy on earth. Shinichi didn’t doubt it a bit.
It took some time to earn her trust again though. It was hard, but he was more than willing to endure it. Although at times, he forgot where he stood. At times, he was upset and mad at her distrust. He was thinking, why would five unanswered calls upset her? It was so shallow to argue about it and dig into his mistakes when he was Conan. He was a rational guy and he would always retort something in their argument that would surely make her stop what she was being upset about. She was being too emotional and too bitter with the whole thing.
But then, he would see the sadness in her eyes. Despite how angry tears were starting to fall, despite how she was refusing to look at him, despite how her hand curled as if preventing herself from using her karate on him, what strike him most was the sadness in her eyes. The same sadness when she had known of Conan, of his betrayals, of his lies. Then just like that, he would go against his nature. He would not argue with her anymore and make amends. He would apologize. It took a lot for him to swallow his pride. Especially when he knew he was right, and reasonable. But for Ran, he would swallow it. He would apologize.
The only compensation he got was how surprised she always was. Ran knew what kind of a person he was. So, every time they argue, with him ending up apologizing, it was always consistent. She would get surprised and it would end up with her cooling down, acknowledging her mistake or her overreaction, and they would make up.
It was also one of the reasons why he didn’t mind lowering his pride. Making up with Ran always involved hugs and kisses and no matter how cheesy it was, he loved it. Even though he would never ever admit it.
He thought it was a good practice to be a little less proud, after all, once they finished high school, they would see each other frequently and more arguments might come because they decided to live together as college starts.
They had discussed it, two months prior to their graduation, they decided that they would live together under one roof. Both would be going to Tokyo University. Shinichi had taken criminology while Ran had taken law to follow her mother’s footsteps.
They tried to reason to themselves that it would be wise to live together. They would be studying in the same university, would probably find dormitories closer to each other. They’d probably always see each other and hang around at each other apartments. Instead of wasting money on different rents and other miscellaneous things, it was wise to just live together. And even with those excuses, no one would admit that the real reason was they wanted to be closer, more intimate and have private time together.
With the help of Sonoko’s arrangement (after Shinichi threatened her that he would expose to her father that she and Makoto-san were living together if ever she told anybody about their deal), they had acquired a decent apartment in a high-rise building. Their parents didn’t know because they were sure Ran’s would oppose.
Especially Occhan.
For safety measure, Sonoko made sure a vacant but fully furnished dorm would be available for Ran to reside in on the off chance her parents visited her, so they wouldn’t be exposed.
Shinichi was ecstatic. Living together with Ran was the best thing that happened to him. It wasn’t like he hadn’t experienced it before. He was Conan before and Ran was a good home-maker, but the absence of her father and the fact that he was in his real form and didn’t need to act like a little boy, he was really elated to experience it with her.
She was good at everything. At cooking, taking care of the house, taking care of him. Even though the arguments and little fights were still there, it was nothing compared to the feeling when he went home and saw her or the feeling of sleeping next to her.
It was surreal at the beginning, until Shinichi had been struck with a problem.
Intimacy.

Hi Mirror! I hope your week is starting off on a good note. I have a question for you: what's your favourite thing about Ran and/or Ran's interactions with the other characters? ~ Santa
Short long answer: This.
Long short answer: Beneath the cut.
Oh, silly me, forgot to mention...
Best leitmotif in the entire series, hands-down.
Rereading volumes 1--55: Ran
I miss Ran.
I think that’s what hit me the hardest when rereading the earlier volumes: Ran feels like a completely different person to what I remember her being in the later manga, and I don’t mean in a good, isn’t-in-incredible-how-her-character-developed way. I mean I really can’t figure out how she got from A to B, but she seems like a completely different character.
I love the Masami Hirota case for a lot of reasons–knowing its crucial relevance to the plot, the clever cross-deceptions, and Akemi’s death still managing to make me tear up through what a raw gut punch her last few panels are–but I think Ran JUMPING OUT OF A WINDOW and SMASHING HER WAY INTO A SUSPECT’S CAR because she thinks he killed “Masami” is still up there with my favourite Ran moments. I feel like later on she was flanderized down to doing nothing but cry in response to things; here, she cries about Masami’s death because tearing up easily has always been a part of Ran’s character, but so has this wonderful, burning fury that I feel like she lacks later on. From the first chapter, Ran has been a karate champion who, yes, will cry at deaths and ghosts, but will always respond, where she believes it possible, with action. When Sonoko’s in a car about to roll off a cliff, Ran smashes it open and pulls her best friend out. When startled by an axe-murderer in an isolated house, her response is to scream but also to kick the attacker hard enough to snap the handle of the axe. When a fake clockmaker’s grandson tries to take her hostage, Conan and Kogoro display fear… for her attacker. Who she promptly lays flat and then complains of him startling her. I always loved this mix of fierceness and tenderness in Ran, that she was a top-drawer badass who also felt strong emotions, but I just feel like in later volumes the badass fell by the wayside in favour of the emotions rather than the two continuing to work in harmony.
I can’t pinpoint it exactly, but I feel like the downslide happened at the end of the Desperate Revival arc, when Shinichi continually abandoned Ran at the restaurant. Ran felt off to me for a lot of this case, and I think it’s because she was so passive. I know this is a big moment for both of them, finally getting to spend time together after (as far as Ran knows) not seeing each other for months, but it felt like Shinichi was leading the entire thing–yes, he asks Ran’s permission to go investigate the murder, but it felt a little odd to me that she didn’t go with him, or never went to look for him after he ran off and had been away for ages. The previous time that he returned, the first time we met Heiji, she was bombarding him with questions (rightly so) and chased after him as soon as he tried to run off… I guess I feel like she didnt’ stay at that table in the restaurant for any reason other than “the narrative needs her to”.
And I’m uncomfortable with this ending because it’s part of a long chain of Shinichi repeatedly gaslighting Ran about his identity and location and perpetually lying to her, yet playing off their unresolved feelings for each other as ~tragically romantic~.I really don’t understand why Shinichi is still hiding from Ran, to be honest. He is living in her house and using her father as a cover, which during the Rena Mizunashi incident nearly got him killed, and might have gotten Rean killed too as a possible loose end. It might have been sensible at first, when only Shinichi and Agasa knew the secret and didn’t know anything about the identity and scope of the organization they were dealing with (at the start, Shinichi just through it was two guys), but now Shinichi is rolling in Black Org information and has been spreading his identity around like butter; his parents know, a random dude from Osaka that he never knew before he was Conan knows, a random kid from America who is up to his giant glasses in BO shit knows, a former member of the Black Organization knows, and at least one actual active member of the Black Organization knows! Basically, I really dont’ understand why he hasn’t told Ran yet; she’s hardly defenseless–hell, she’s a good sight more capable of defending herself than he is, or Haibara, or Eisuke–and with him having already brought BO to her doorstep at least once (twice? Only seen scatty bits about this waiter dude who works for Kogoro now and is probably BO?), what she doesn’t know could kill her.
And bloody hell, she deserves to know if she’s still somehow in love with him through all this shit. It think that’s what rubs me up the wrong way too; their entire relationship is a badly dragged out game of deception and distance, but the narrative still handles it as a positive romance. No. You stop that.
Actually like holy shit
Ran Mouri was the Peggy Carter of my childhood: she was tough without having to sacrifice any of her softness for it, and I learned so many things from her and it hurt so much to see her character treated that way in the later DC chapters.
When I was younger I saw Desperate Revival as something romantic, but at the same time there was something missing there. Like, maybe if Ran had decided to move on from there, I probably would have accepted it, given when Shinichi put her through. Because given that, if Gosho still wanted Shinichi and Ran to end up together it means he’d would fix shit.
No more lying, distance or deception. There would be character development and battle couple badassery for all, and their romance would actually be fucking healthy.
I certainly hope that wouldn’t just exist in my dreams.
Desperate Revival feels like an arc where the status quo between Shinichi and Ran SHOULD have shifted significantly. it feels like Shinichi and Ran’s relationship should have either advanced significantly or ended, not… ending up in exactly the same place as before. It’s not too long after this, either, that Ran jumps into a fight between Vermouth and Jodie, putting herself literally in the line of fire of the Black Organization, and still not knowing anything after it’s all over. Ran’s more than badass enough to handle the BO and she’s a weak spot for Vermouth, so I wish she was allowed more agency in that area. C’mon, Shinichi, she’s more badass than you and you know it…
Macho bullshit, I say. Seriously Gosho, there’s a very nicely drawn line that divides being protective and giving a love interest agency.
Urgh, I think I may have let my emotions run away with this, I can’t quite put my thoughts into words. Really tho, this makes me wanna do an AU starting from Desperate Revival.
I would absolutely read that AU. Macho bullshit sounds like the best term for it, honestly. Gosho keeps playing Shinichi up as ~tragically heroic~, keeping all these secrets from Ran to keep her safe even though it hurts him so… without giving equal weight to how much it hurts Ran. Again, she is MUCH more capable of protecting herself, not just physically as a karate badass but in the extended freedoms she has a teenager, a near-adult and clearly in charge of her household, as opposed to a child. Telling Ran the truth would be a good tactical move in how many restrictions it takes off of Conan as well as the truth being the very least that Ran bloody well deserves.
Yeeeeessss that’s exactly what he’s doing like oh my god Gosho we get the point now he’s ~hurting~ because of that decision move on and develop him please
Like really Shinichi choosing to come clean to Ran would have developed the characters, the relationship and the plot why was it not done?
But character development means breaking the stasis and how else do you think he’s dragged this out for twenty years
Seriously I don’t know why he’s so attached to this particular sate of affairs, but it’s caused what at this point might be irreparable harm to Shinichi and Ran’s development, both as individuals and as a couple.
But do you realize how much I want to see Ran kick the shit out of Gin
Omg yes
Primary Goal: Character Development
Secondary Goal: Seeing Ran kick Gin in the face.
I got so excited for movie 13 because of that oh god. She may not have managed to kick Gin, but she did go head to head with a BO member.
(See Shinichi even the movies acknowledge her badassery)
I loved that fight a lot. I’m annoyed that it’s another instance of Ran being face to face and fighting with a BO member and still being left in the dark in the end, but I SERIOUSLY love that fight, especially the implication that Ran was winning until she kicked Irish in the face, and only lost the upper hand due to being freaked out that her opponent’s face was apparently tearing off, which is completely understandable. She nearly beat a highly trained killer in hand-to-hand combat. SHINICHI, YOU NEED HER TO KNOW WHAT SHE’S FACING. I feel like if she’d been aware of Vermouth’s style of disguise and knew that what she was looking at was a mask falling off, she might have been able to retain her cool.
I mean, the movies are non-serial and I don’t know if they’re counted as canon to the events of the manga, so of course she COULDN’T receive any new information, tragically, but GOD was that fight satisfying.
we need to talk about shinichi’s development and how he became the romantic lover boy that he is
because, as pointed out by many fans, this boy was a complete loser in the beginning 😭
taking notes for which amusement ride is better for his “date” with ran, taking inspiration from kaito of all people for romantic gestures?? 💀 poor boy he just wanted everything to be perfect and wanted to make sure ran was going to have fun with him 🥲
(lowkey spoiler?) the episode zero special furthered this assumption because shinichi was seen looking at a guy doing his famous “soda move” to a girl’s cheek, which is a stupid addition because shinichi has been doing that even before tropical land. anyway !!
i do not blame ran for thinking he is a completely dork when it comes to romance and stuff
(well not completely clueless now but not aware enough, still waiting for ran’s birthday case…)
in my opinion, as i once said in one of my posts, conan did change everything for him.
it was enough for him to know that ran reciprocated his feelings to become the certified lover boy of the century 🥹
this is him in the ninth chapter
my boy was ready to risk it all and confess to her the second he would get his body back 😭 (and he almost did !!! the desperate revival arc is the proof of it !!!)
this was also him in file. 71
bruh not even a single married man in this manga can get this romantic and be at this level of yearning
shinichi changed in so many ways, it’s very sweet to think ran is one of the reasons why, probably the most important.
IN DEFNESE OF SHINICHI KUDO - PART 1/3
the most common criticism of shinichi and shinran is that he hides his identity from ran, which makes him seem manipulative and their relationship unhealthy.
but here’s the truth: he really is protecting her.
for the record, i’m not interested in excusing him. his deception is a huge breach of trust. my only goal is to humanize him. to show that while his choice is undeniably wrong, his intentions are pure.
that's why i’ll be comparing shinran to peter and gwen from the amazing spider man. they may not seem alike because gwen knows peter is spiderman, ran doesn’t know shinichi is conan. but the parallel isn’t the secret itself, it’s the choice to keep the person they love away from danger.
the similarities begin with the warnings they each receive.
peter’s warning comes from gwen’s dad right before he dies:
shinichi’s comes from agasa:
chapter 2
both peter and shinichi recognize the truth in those warnings, so they try to honor them by putting distance between themselves and the women they love.
for peter it means breaking up with gwen. with his identity already exposed, the only way to protect her is to stay away:
for shinichi it means hiding his identity. the less ran knows about the black organization and his circumstances, the safer she is:
chapter 379
but of course neither gwen nor ran are blind. both of them are sharp enough to put the pieces together on their own:
chapter 483
eventually, peter and shinichi start to bend under the weight of it all. a part of them still craves that closeness and that need keeps pulling them back in:
chapter 483
so they end up running in circles. a constant push and pull between love and safety. closing the distance they created, only to rebuild it again:
chapter 36
and because gwen and ran are fully realized characters, they eventually reach their breaking point:
chapter 260
which debunks the idea that ran is just endlessly waiting or unrealistically patient. she pushes back, the same way gwen does.
it’s just that peter and shinichi are never able to really let go. they still find ways to stay close and the girls feel that closeness. even when peter and shinichi don’t intend them to. that's what keeps them in those dynamics:
chapter 51, 36 and 247
but eventually, it catches up with them.
peter makes a fatal mistake:
and shinichi nearly does the same:
chapter 254
closing the distance feels like love’s victory but it’s the very thing that opens the door to disaster. because gwen and ran were never made for the sidelines. idealistic and stubborn, they’ll always step in, no matter how much peter and shinichi beg them not to:
chapter 640
and sure enough, the one time ran stumbles onto the black organization, she nearly gets herself killed:
chapter 428 and 434
if ran ever knew the full depth of the black organization and shinichi’s history with them, there is no way in hell she would just sit back and let the others handle it. she would get involved. what makes her even more dangerous is that she’s very good at hiding her feelings. that's why no one notices when she see those photos. no one realizes she's hiding in that car.
shinichi knows this about ran, he knows her.
so when haibara hands him the antidote, he takes it. shinichi isn't an impulsive superhero like peter. he's a calculated detective. he considers his options and looks at every possible outcome before deciding. and that’s why the one time he nearly confesses, it's not because he suddenly stops caring about the danger. it's because he thinks ran already figured it out and there's no other way to keep hiding it. until there is.
there are only two other times he comes close to exposing himself:
chapter 35
chapter 772
even then, shinichi’s choice is deliberate: ran’s safety comes first.
in a moment of weakness, peter makes the opposite choice. and it costs him everything:
shinichi knows he can’t afford to stumble like that.
one misstep and ran is gone:
chapter 242
that’s why shinichi stays silent. he's run the numbers. he’s already weighed the risk of involving ran. and the ending...
is always the same.

I miss when Jodie was giving Ran advices… good times
Ohmygod i love this rendition of her hair. It makes sense if it's like this!! 🥹 Op you're a genius
the timeline in which shinichi could’ve confessed and ran probably wouldn’t reciprocate him because she wouldn’t have realised her feelings or she didn’t look at him in that way yet is very insane to me 😭
i said this a billion times in this blog but what to do you mean ran realised her feelings/fell in love with shinichi only a year pre-canon???
i’m a sucker for boy fell first trope but i have to admit that sometimes i found it *affectionately* hilarious that he would not get rejected, that would never happen, my girl loves him dearly but he would drive her insane 💀 she would definitely LOOSE HER MIND. especially middle school ran. like that was a baby 🥺
this was ran post-confession when she’s well aware of how she feels
imagine how ran pre canon would react??? 😭
and i know, I KNOW of course ran reciprocates his feelings, she has always liked him but that doesn’t necessarily mean in the way shinichi does. in my opinion, at least, he’s the real yearner here. and i know, i admit it i love pining!shinichi SO MUCH. i just love to see him yearn for ran <3 sorry shinichi 😭
i mean this scene is top tier yearning shinichi !!!
he set the standard too high (as he should), this boy is completely whipped, he loves her so much to the point that he’s willing to give up on trying to be with her as long she smiles again 😭
i know post BO he’s going to navigate through A LOT. but i selfishly really, REALLY want him to fight for ran forgiveness. she deserves to be upset about everything !!! pls aoyama 😣
anyway, i don’t think he loves her more, just differently and surely since forever. idk if this makes sense but i’ve seen over the years some fans sharing the same thought as me so i’m not completely insane i guess 🫡
(just to clarify in case i didn’t express myself properly, i do believe they’re equally completely head over heels for each other, so no worries !! they’re my favorite ship of all time so 🙂↕️ i just love men who yearn for their girls 😤)
Hello! What's your absolute top 10 ShinRan moments in order?
this is a great but tough question i realised idk how to answer it 😭 i literally talk about my favorite shinran moments and stuff ALL THE TIME on this blog.
anyway these i selected are not necessary “moments” but i really like these aspects of their relationship so i hope it’s good enough for an answer 🫡 (also i’m well aware of how most of these are from shinichi’s point of view but i just love how he loves her, i can’t help it)
10. shinichi buying for ran a phone with the sea cucumber she desired
9. shinichi noticing every detail about ran, including her silhouette, and also memorising everything she says
8. shinichi giving his phone number to ran so she can call him whenever she wants
7. shinichi vowing to never use ran to solve a case ever again
6. whenever he shows how being with ran in his real body affects him emotionally and physically
5. the confession and the answer
4. when shinichi said this and he wonderfully demonstrated how he loves ran unconditionally, even if it means he has to lose her
3. the entire desperate revival arc, especially the restaurant scenes
2. whenever he’s vocal and honest with his feelings for ran
1. shinichi yearning for ran throughout the whole valentine’s day case
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
fantastic list
You say BO!Shinichi AU’s are edgy and cringe-worthy? I raise you something even edgier and even more nonsensical: BO!Ran AU

Intimacy.
