it matters because making a woman of color’s story revolve around a white man, instead of letting her stand for herself, is racist. there’s a way they can do it right, but frankly, i don’t trust anyone to. 

television characters are not real people, and its up to tv writers to responsibly portray people in ways that aren’t cliched and don’t make poc play second fiddle to white folk.

Ok but we’ve only ever witnessed Marcus being interested in men, he’s never showed any response to women that way, so it’s pretty safe to assume, at this point, that he’s gay and not bi. I don’t think he likes women at all tbh

the thing is like … i literally agree with u, to a point.

i really feel that the show wrote marcus as a gay man. explicitly wrote him as a gay man, in fact, and i have a deep and very specific attachment to marcus as a 53 year old gay catholic man. i think they wrote him as gay and have since, for whatever reason, changed their minds.

and i have deeply mixed feelings about the fact that mouse might be marcus’ ex. it’s fishy as fuck to introduce a woman of colour and then intrinsically tie her history to the white male lead like that.

i’m not thrilled about the way this has been done! at all! i think the cast & crew absolutely should’ve done better than this, and that essentially retconning him to be bisexual instead of gay is not the right way to approach everything. being gay/bi isn’t actually interchangeable! they come with separate, unique experiences.

there’s endless ways to be frustrated without being a biphobic troglobite.

at the end of the day, ben daniels has said marcus isn’t gay. ben is also on record from an interview a year ago that he wanted to play marcus as bisexual. jeremy slater has at this point explicitly said that marcus is bisexual. so maybe we express our disappointments in the way it’s been handled like grown ups, instead of like assholes?

marcus’ representation as a bisexual man is not perfect and i know why people are taking issue with it. but it’s slid nothing into rampant biphobia where people are making ugly gifset series to “prove” that marcus is gay. marcus is just as good a character either way, and the lgbt community is not inherently losing anything either way, and i really can’t believe it’s come to this

lmao i love how hetero relationships in shows can have like….zero build up between characters outside of like….2 lines of shitty dialogue/eye-contact and they could be fucking left right and center and nobody will bat an eye but when two gay people meet, when they show blatant interest in one another, and on top of that attempt some level of emotional intimacy…it’s not like….deep enough? for one kiss????

marcus was established as a gay man in season one i genuinely don’t know why people think his sexuality needs more “handling” than that? 

i don’t know about you but i’m pretty tired of tv shows that have to pad out all the bits around any gay character who shows up. being gay isn’t marcus’ biggest problem, it’s not a problem at ALL for him, and marcus/peter is being treated tonally exactly the same as thousands of straight ships have been over time.

he kissed the man he’s attracted to. that’s all. and straight characters have been having this exact plotline - i mean, this exact one, this ‘taste of life outside The Job with someone who gets them’ plotline - for years. i’m pretty sure that’s the storyline of literally every relationship that the winchesters in supernatural have had (not that spn is the gold standard for writing). it’s incredibly gratifying that thex is treating marcus’ romantic experiences as just romantic experiences.

i don’t know about yall, but i’ve been waiting literally years for tv to start treating gay relationships the same as straight ones.
