Stein on the Danube, Seen from the Kreuzberg 1913
Egon Schiele
An elegant lady posing before the sunflowers of Vincent van Gogh (c.1916-1920). Isaac Israels (Dutch, 1865-1934). Oil on canvas.
Just before moving into his late father’s studio in 1917, Israels was given two paintings on loan from Vincent van Gogh by Jo van Gogh-Bonger, sister-in-law of Van Gogh and a good friend of Israels. The two paintings served as an important source of inspiration to Israels as he longed to study the intense colours used by van Gogh, who he greatly admired. Israels clearly did not intend to make a copy of the painting but incorporated the work in his paintings in his own unique style where, with just a few effective sweeps of the brush, he brilliantly captures the sunflowers.

Ernst Friedrich von Liphart (Estonian, 1847–1932).
Sweet Reflections (1886). Gabriel Schachinger (German, 1850-1912). Oil on canvas. Woodmere Art Museum.
Sweet Reflections is a painting of great virtuosity. Gabriel Schachinger, court painter to King Ludwig II of Bavaria, was a master of confectionary realism. Here one can almost hear the crinkle of the young woman’s ball gown and feel the extraordinary decorations on her fashionable bolero jacket. Exotic peacock feathers frame the reflection of her face in the mirror. Proper, impeccably clothed, and prosperous, she is likely on her way to a ball or fancy party, checking her appearance on her way out the door with a self-approving gaze.
Happy birthday to Amedeo Modigliani, who was born on this day in 1884. Though both a sculptor and a painter, he is best known for his Modern portraits and nudes, characterized by elongated necks and faces. This elegant painting is of fellow artist Jeanne Hebuterne, his domestic partner and frequent model. Tragically, less than three years after this was painted, Modigliani died of tubercular menegitis and Jeanne committed suicide out of grief.
