Anyone else ever think about how the Great Devourer was the ninjas’ first “the world is going to end RIGHT NOW if we don’t stop this threat in its tracks” battle?
Like, the fight was already intense as-is but it’s crazy to remember that was their first time dealing with a threat of that immediate magnitude.

Drew Lloyd's mer-form like... a year or two ago? Friends and I have been joking about making our AU Lloyds interact and I brought this one back up, so I figured I should actually bother to design his civilian outfit.
I think that, like a lot of long-lived characters, Wu and Garmadon have a very skewed sense of time. Like Misako will be talking about an “ancient” civilization and they’ll both just be like “Nuh uh I remember those guys clear as day”
She has to then inform them that was over a thousand years ago and, no, she’s right, it’s ancient history.
I remember that post you made about a lot of the hypocrisy that surrounds discussion around Garmadon’s character because people always use the the Devourer’s Venom to excuse him completely.
What about Sensei Garmadon in particular? Because I’ve definitely noticed a lot hypocrisy surrounding him, when people contrast him to Wu.
They constantly hate on Wu for not mentioning any of the villains from his past until they start causing trouble. And act like Garmadon is much better than him in this regard.
"He tells them everything" they’d say. "He never keeps secrets."
…Except he does. Like, he didn’t say a peep about Chen -his evil sensei who was a war criminal- until he became a problem.
Which is….exactly what people constantly criticize Wu for. But the fandom just…ignores it when Garmadon does it? Completely? Even when the characters themselves call him out on it?
("Why haven’t you or Wu ever told us that there are others with powers like us?" "You never told me about this place. How do you know so much about this island?" "You never told me you had a sensei!")
It’s jarring. Why is it that people regard Sensei Garmadon as the better teacher, yet hold Wu to higher standards?
Oh yeah, the double standards about Sensei Garmadon can get absolutely wild in this fandom. The logic you point out of “Garmadon knew about them too” can basically be applied to every villain from the show, since pretty much every villain Wu faced when he was young, Garmadon also fought.
Now that you’re saying it, honestly, yeah, Garmadon arguably had more blame for saying nothing about Chen because that was his mentor. Wu had no personal connection to Chen outside of them being enemies in The Serpentine War. Garmadon did.
That, and, like I’ve said in other posts: Sensei G is just a way bigger offender of secret keeping than Wu ever is. Like, in most “examples” people give for Wu there’s a pretty damn good reason he didn’t say anything (that being: how the hell was he supposed to know of the thousands of villains he’s fought and defeated THIS SPECIFIC ONE would ever be an issue again?), but Sensei G? I can at least think of one big example of “why would you never TELL ANYONE”? Two words: the letter. Like seriously WHYYYYY do people give him a free pass for that one??
Not Wu but another area there’s a lot of hypocrisy for Sensei G is how one of the most common arguments I see to justify hate for Misako is “Lloyd forgave her too quickly” (which, yes but that’s a writing flaw not a character one), and then the same people making that argument won’t apply the same to Sensei Garmadon. Who was also forgiven instantly. For FAR worse offenses.
Idk man this fandom is weird sometimes. Especially on Insta, TikTok, and Reddit.
Just saw a clip from Seabound and I just noticed Misako was in the library with Wu because he says he was researching the element of water (because of Nya’s powers going haywire), and who better to be there for the research than the best archeologist in Ninjago who, as an ordinary mortal, managed to uncover secrets about The Prophecy of the Green Ninja nobody else could?

But Lloyd has FORGIVEN MISAKO FOR THE BAD THING! He has long since abandoned any resentment he harbored towards her for abandoning him, because he knew that she only did it to try to protect him...
Misako... WAS probably in the wrong for dumping Lloyd at Darkley's (even with a valid reason) but I DON'T THINK that Misako was at all aware that he was getting bullied, because bullying is bad and in Darkley's, bad is GOOD. I doubt teachers would snitch on kids for doing things that align with their school's intention.
Also how likely is it that the rickety evil school where the kids can easily take control would care enough to inform a parent that their student is no longer enrolled when said parent is A) very busy and B) probably a nobody to them.
Ik this isn’t the main point of the post but my take on “Why Darkley’s?” has always been that given Misako knew Lloyd was going to be the Green Ninja, she thought a school for villainy would help delay the Final Battle, since Lloyd wouldn’t fight Garmadon if he was a “bad boy.” She clearly thought the Final Battle could be delayed, if not prevented, since that’s why she was researching the prophecy (and is the entire plot of the episode “The Last Hope”).
It’s also possible that given that Lloyd’s father was Lord Garmadon, a school like Darkley’s would be more likely to have students that respect Lloyd as opposed to another school where Garmadon’s evil is considered bad (as occurs in the Lego Ninjago Movie) as opposed to impressive. Granted, I’m not sure how well known Lord Garmadon’s pre-S1 actions are, but Lloyd clearly knew of his father as a bad guy in Season 1 even though the only canonical things we know Garmadon did before then was 1) try to steal the Golden Weapons, which occurred between just him and Wu and 2) command the Skeleton Army, a detail which Wu wasn’t even aware of until the Pilots — clearly there was more going on.
But yeah it’s obviously bad that Lloyd ran away from school and Misako did nothing— it is possible she didn’t know, but not a great look tbf.
Another point that people tend to gloss over is that there is no timeline with our given information that makes sense, and everyone always jumps to the worst one possible.
Lloyd was so young when Misako left him to live out all of his childhood at darkley's that he doesn't remember anything about her. Simultaneously, his first day there (aka, the day she drops him off) he vividly remembers having to be folded into the group by gene because he did not understand the customs of the place, and was a late comer to the dynamic of the in groups there.
The reason everyone assumes she specifically is the one who abandoned him is because Lloyd says it directly, but this is a child who has not had any contact with her since he was tiny, and has since been surrounded by people literally describing themselves as evil. You don't think they're going to feed him a negative narrative about about the person actively fighting for good who has no sway in his life any longer?
Now Misako doesn't do the best job of defending herself when she pops back up, so that doesn't help, but that doesn't mean she knows what mistruths she might need to unravel, and might even signal that she sees whatever she did do as irredeemable as well, feels guilty, so isn't really rearing to justify herself, making everyone else in the situation assume the worst.
No matter which way you slice it, it's a bad situation. But there are so many shades of gray in the dialogue around what the custody of this kid was (where is garm in all this???), and everyone always piles all the responsibility on misako like the correct option is obvious and easy, as if this isn't one of the most stressful, tricky situations to navigate imaginable.
Also, I agree with the points above. I hadn't thought up the prophesy reason, but that totally makes sense, and with his dad being evil, and that evil likely running through his blood, it 100% makes sense to set him up in an environment when his predispositions won't get him habitually punished, and his name carries some weight to get him by.
Maybe the name meant that Darkley's was the only place that would even accept him.
There are so many fragments of lore to sift through which paint a conflicting picture. You're going to have to pick and choose which statements you interpret literally. I have so many alternate scenarios running through my head.

If I can chime in with unsolicited observations for a second here: on the “Why Darkley’s” question, more often than not I see it where people in this fandom done even want to actually engage with the question. In fact, most commonly I see it immediately written off as her making some irrational, brash choice in the heat of the moment and not thinking through the consequences…
But that’s not who Misako is as a character.
To say she made an irrational choice with no logical reasoning behind it requires ignoring every single thing we know about this character. And one of them is that she’s a careful planner. Even in the little we get to see of her in action, Misako, like her or not, thinks through her course of action and doesn’t go into anything unprepared. She’s probably the best archeologist in Ninjago, she’s smart and doesn’t just make choices without any thought. Now, that’s not saying that someone couldn’t be put into circumstances that would make a normally logical person act irrationally, and if there’s any circumstances that would push someone to that limit it’s definitely the ones Misako is in…
However that’s also about where a lot of people “playing devil’s advocate” end. That clearly her circumstances made her do something illogical and there’s no possible further explanation to it. None at all. It’s just that absolute unwillingness to engage with the fact that maybe, just MAYBE Misako isn’t some devil. Like anyone can dislike a character for any reason (including no reason) but I just absolutely cannot see a justification for the visceral hatred Misako regularly receives at even just the vague mention of her existence.
Ultimately, there was no objectively “correct” choice and what was the “best” option is entirely subjective. As the above reblog says, there’s a lot of shades of grey here. Some people (like myself) may think Darkley’s was the best choice for a variety of reasons, but others might think something else could’ve been better. Unfortunately, again like yall are mentioning above, there’s a big information gap on other potential choices, and more often than not people just jump to worst case scenario that paints Misako in the worst light possible. In that whole “jumping to worst case scenario” thing is also a lot of “Lloyd forgave his mom too quick” leading to the conclusion he must ACTUALLY be uncomfortable with her the whole time and hate her presence because she “forced her way back into his life”. Even though Lloyd has never actually expressed any amount of being uncomfortable with his mom and in fact shows the exact opposite. Was it rushed and poor writing for their arc not to be longer? Yes. Does that make it so Lloyd really actually wants his mom to go away and he doesn’t love her? No. Tied into all that is of course the “Misako is never around after her introduction” argument which, from what I’ve gathered comes from just kind of ignoring the fact that she’s shown and told to be active and present just off screen (because she’s a side character and unfortunately doesn’t receive much actual screen time).
I think I’m just rambling at this point but overall I guess it’s just the refusal to accept that Misako isn’t this ultimate evil and terrible absolutely horrible mother at every moment of every day. It’s odd. And I have many words about it.

Idk if it’s just a me thing but I just Do Not Understand jokes from any fandom that solely rely on misunderstanding or mischaracterizing the character the joke is about. And I don’t mean like playing one of their traits up to en extreme for comedic effect I mean just straight up like- completely inventing a trait that just isn’t there in canon.

What makes the situation interesting I think is that, at least from my perspective, there wasn’t a solution available to Misako where she would’ve ended up completely morally in the right. Even just staying at home to raise Lloyd would’ve arguably been morally dubious to a degree because that would require just sitting on the information she had and, while being probably one of the most qualified people to do something about it, doing nothing.
Unfortunately that’s something that get frustratingly often overlooked or disregarded in discussion about Misako. In the fandom a lot of the discourse/hatred comes with the assumption that some morally pure, totally perfect solution existed when it didn’t. Everyone can argue for days about what they think would’ve been the best choice, but ultimately all of them came with major downsides, drawbacks, and risks. Darkley’s at least was a strategic choice, but what was the best option is entirely subjective (I do believe it was Darkley’s but that’s my own opinion).

Misako would not have left if Lloyd wasn’t the Green Ninja, the only reason she did is directly stated as because of that factor. She wanted to stop Lloyd from having to fight his father. If he weren’t the Green Ninja we can reasonably assume she would’ve stayed around to raise him, probably having Wu watch over Lloyd whenever she had to go on an expedition (since no Green Ninja means there’s no hang ups about allowing Wu to watch over the kid).
I would like to say in regard to the second reblog that Misako says nothing like that at any point in the episode you’re referring to. Misako’s goal was never to save the world, that wasn’t something on her mind, it was to save Lloyd specifically from his destiny as the Green Ninja. Her priority at every single point was to protect Lloyd and do what she thought could save him from the fate of killing his father. Lloyd was the only thing she cared about, not the world, and I do think that’s part of what makes her a very interesting character. Someone so dedicated to their child she’s willing to try the impossible and, as a mortal woman with no special powers, lineage, or whatever, defy and rewrite destiny itself all for her son’s sake.
She does say something similar actually but my inherent hatred for Misako made my memory skewed lol

Which... kind of sounds the same to me, even if her motivation is slightly better.
No like, while I appreciate the fact that she was doing all she did to save Lloyd from the prophecy, it doesn't change the fact she left him in a school where he was bullied and where that was encouraged - a school that kicked him out for not being evil enough to fend for himself when he was only like what, 10?

Yeah leaving him at a school that teaches her son the polar opposite of what destiny wanted from him was pretty smart, but at what cost?
But I digress, the actual line does give me hope that if Lloyd wasn't actually destined to be the green ninja, she wouldn't leave him.... maybe....

Even leaving Lloyd at a normal boarding school could’ve very quickly devolved into a TLNM situation. Hell, Darkley’s was probably the ONE place she could leave him where him being Garmadon’s son wouldn’t be something working against him, but rather either being a neutral factor or actively helping him.
Also Lloyd wasn’t bullied at Darkley’s. He was the victim of two pranks that we know about (and one of them was a pantsing which… sounds about right for an all-boys school) but there’s no actual evidence he was singled out and targeted (and no the fire ants thing is not evidence of that, it’s explicitly stated Brad did that because Lloyd was the new kid and we don’t hear about any further similar incidents). Genuinely the fanon has distorted people’s perception of Darkley’s and made people think we know a lot more about it and Lloyd’s time there than we actually do. We know like the two pranks listed and that’s… about it. We know diddly squat about how bad or not it actually was.
Plus we very obviously was not told about the expulsion so pinning blame on her for that is also unfair. Everything we know about Misako and how devoted she is to protecting her son tells us she would’ve returned if she knew. And we’re given no indication she did.
Overall, any honest reading of Misako’s character would tell you she would not have left Lloyd if it wasn’t necessary. It’s not a “maybe”, that’s just who her character is.
Oh I'm not blaming Misako for the school's decisions. I'm blaming her for not checking in.
I dunno about if the school was the only place that wouldn't turn into TLNM situation, because I feel like these two universes are pretty different. How well known was Garmadon in the series anyway? As a villain I mean.
But anyway, this is just how I feel about her. Characters abandoning their children just doesn't sit right with me, especially when it was a choice - maybe it's an unfair outlook, but eh.
The issue there is we don’t actually know if she checked in or not. Yes, she didn’t physically visit, but the show never touches on the subject of if Misako wrote letters or something similar or not. In fact, if you want to take Tommy A.’s books as canon, one of those (“Splinter in the Blind Man’s Eye”) says Misako did write letters that Lloyd ignored. So basically either we don’t have evidence to say in either direction, or
And we know Garmadon was at least known enough to be feared by the general population. Like how the villagers of Jamanakai were scared when Lloyd pretended to be his father. So he was a known and feared figure, probably not as immediately known as the movieverse, but enough to where it’s not unreasonable to think Lloyd being his son would’ve been a factor actively working against him in a normal school setting.
I’ve always found the word “abandoned” in this situation to carry too many negative connotations to it to be in any way accurate to Misako’s situation. She didn’t want to leave Lloyd and every action we see from her shows how deeply she loves and cares for him. Unfortunately, as already mentioned, none of the other options we could surmise she had available to her were any better than Darkley’s, most being actively worse. There was no possible situation here was Misako came out of it being completely morally in the right.

Please don't come after me but sometimes it feels like the ninjago fandom ignores Nya's trauma from sky bound and makes it all about Jay. There is SO much angst potential for Nya from her feeling hated/ignored by the public that adores the rest of the team to literally DYING at the end. (and struggling while being the only girl on the team and constantly looked down upon) But I might be a little obsessed with her so take this with a grain of salt.

Tbh I feel like the marriage thing could tie very nicely into the identity issues and being labeled as just “the girl”. Like technically speaking Nadakhan could’ve married ANYONE to secure his goal of ultimate power. Nothing in the season tells us it absolutely HAS to be one specific person or that Nya had some quality that would make it work with her and nobody else. But no. Nadakhan put off his unlimited wishes because he wanted to use her specifically, not just because she looks like another woman (something something how society demands women look homogeneous and same-y to be considered worthy) but ALSO to be used as a vessel for his dead lover.
