“Not at this moment. But he’s gonna get hurt if he keeps doing what he’s doing. Don’t worry about it. Just take care of your big bro, alright?”
“Okay, Yosuke-nii! I will!”
garudynekunai:
“Thank you, Nanako-chan. Can you do me a favor? Get a bag of ice for Yu ready when he gets home. He’s gonna need it.”
“Um...okay? Is Big Bro hurt? Did he do something wrong?”
“A hug for you, Yosuke-nii! Big bro says you have...’self-esteem issues’, but I think you’re cool anyway!” She hugs him.
@garudynekunai
sumofzero:
“I think he’d like that.”
“Okay, Big Bro! Thanks!”
sumofzero:
“Because Yosuke has some self esteem problems. Don’t worry.”
“Should I give Yosuke-nii a hug?”
sumofzero:
“…Hopefully never.”
“Is it really that bad? If so, why are you guys talking about it to begin with?”
sumofzero:
“Is this one of those things I’ll be told about when I’m older?”
“Big Bro? Yosuke-nii? What’s a ‘mara’?”
@sumofzero @garudynekunai
garudynekunai:
It’s not as bad working at Junes when he isn’t constantly on the sales floor. Far fewer customers he has to deal with, and better hours. Now, Yosuke mostly wanders around the aisles when he’s doing his own shopping. That doesn’t mean he’s unwilling to help some of his favorite customers.
“Nanako-chan, want some help?”
“Yosuke-nii!” Nanako is very happy to see him. “Yes please! I have to get lots of groceries because Big Bro is coming to visit at the end of the week! Did he tell you?” She looks down at the list in her hands.
“I want to make curry for him...is the stew beef on sale this week?”
sumofzero:
“You did, wonderful Nanako. This is the best curry I’ve ever tasted.” Really, to anyone else, it probably was just a decent curry, but to Yu, it was like heaven on a plate. Because Nanako made it. And she’d tried her very best.
“Sure, we can do that. Is there anything in particular you want to learn how to make?” There was a lot they could. And as for bento. “And of course I can teach you to make your lunches. We should get you some new boxes to match, huh?”
Time to use that Shadow Ops income to spoil Nanako. He used too much of it on his cat after all, time to spend it on someone else who deserved it!
“Hehe~ Yaaay!” Nanako was so unbelievably happy that her Big Bro liked her curry so much. And she was even happier that he was home. She had missed him so much it was painful, even if they had nightly phone calls (when he wasn’t working). There was something about having him here in person that was just so much better than hearing his voice on the phone or seeing pictures of Dia.
“Uh...I want to learn how to make sushi and sandwiches that are shaped like cute animals! Oh, oh! And flowers! And grilled steak! And, and...” She proceeds to list off several other options for bento that she’s seen online and in school.
She stops though when Yu mentions new boxes. She gasps. “Can we get Loveline boxes? They have some really cute ones at Junes!”
sumofzero:
“So I’ve heard, I can’t wait to try it.” He rubbed his eyes a little as he came to kneel at the living room table, taking one of the bowls from Nanako to she could settle herself down without having to worry about spilling both. “It doesn’t matter if you’re using a recipe, Nanako, what matters is the love you put into it.”
Just as long as she wasn’t taking advice from a certain trio of girls when it came to her recipes it would all be fine. He had trust in her. Plus, he was pretty sure he’d warned her about listening to them more times than either of them can count.
“While I’m home, I could teach you to make a few things, if you’d like?” It was no secret that Yu loved to cook, and teaching Nanako would be fun. Especially now she was a little older.
“Thank you for the meal.” Time to dig in, his eyes lighting up a little as he tasted the curry. It took him a few moments to collect himself.
It tastes so good, I’m so proud of her! No don’t cry Yu, dont cry! She’ll think somethings wrong. Keep it in. Keep. It. In.
“This tastes amazing, Nanako.” His voice sounded a little thick but at least he didn’t burst into tears of joy.
“I put lots and lots of love into it, Big Bro!” Nanako said happily. She proceeded to dig into her own food as Yu started on his. She couldn’t help but watch for his reaction to the food. She could see his eyes light up a little bit, and a big smile made its way onto her face.
“Oh yay! I’m so happy that you like it!” Nanako felt extremely proud that she had made something that her big bro was enjoying. She knew that he had bad experiences with curry in the past (mostly because Yosuke recounted the events of that fateful camping trip to her the night she first made curry for everyone), so she was really glad that he liked it.
“I would love to learn new recipes from you, Big Bro! We can make dinner together every night this week! Oh and can you teach me how to make cute box lunches?”
sumofzero:
Nanako probably hadn’t realized it, nor had Yu. That he had fallen asleep on the couch as he had waited. It had been a long trip back. He’d finished his last exam and then booked it to the train station. On top of the lack of sleep he’d gotten while cramming… it was probably expected that he would fall asleep as soon as he was home.
But at her call, he jolted quickly awake…
“A-Ah, right. Coming…”
She knew that her big bro must be tired after such a long trip, and as she had started preparing that night’s dinner, she could hear a soft snoring coming from the living room. She didn’t want to wake him, he obviously needed the rest.
Nanako expertly brought two plates of curry and rice over to the table in the living room. She would have brought out a plate for her dad too, but he had already called and told her that he’d be late tonight, so it would just be her and Big Bro. To his credit, Dojima had improved greatly on coming home on time and eating dinner with Nanako, but there was the occasional night where he did have to work late. Nanako didn’t hold it against him--he was working hard for them.
“We’re having curry tonight, Big Bro!” Nanako announced, taking her normal seat at the table. “Dad says that the curry I make tastes really good! But really, I just used a recipe book...”

Headcanon: Nanako’s Scooter (from archive)
Nanako attempted several different methods in getting to work on time after school. Walking, taking the bus, even running. Unfortunately none of these methods proved reliable since she often stayed after class to ask questions. When this issue was brought to her father by Mr. Hanamura, he suggested that she get a scooter so that she could get to and from Junes with ease. After haggling with Dojima for a bit, Mr. Hanamura agreed to move Nanako’s start time forward until she got a reliable source of transportation.
Thus began a long six months of Nanako studying to get her motorcycle license and saving nearly every penny that she made at Junes. On her 16th birthday her father took her for the test and she passed with flying colors.
Finally, after saving about 80% of her biweekly paychecks for six months, she was almost able to afford the pink and silver moped at the shop in Okina that she had set her sights on.
One day, out of nowhere, Dojima offered to drive her into the city. He asked her how much she had saved towards the moped and she told him that she had just about 200,000 yen. Surprised, but not because of the number, Dojima offered to pay the difference for the scooter, expressing how proud he was of his daughter for sticking it out and saving her money for something that she knew she needed.
Nanako Dojima walked out of that shop with the pink and silver moped that she had wanted so badly.
(And yes, she got to drive it home)
