killer queen lore/story
so since i've had a few people interested in the lore of killer queen, here's more or less what i have but summarized:
the first part of the story is set in a fictional closed city in russia, and the plot of the first arc is essentially 9 temporarily amnesiac people are in a selective memory erasure trial for a pharmaceutical company. some of them are there because they have to pay off debts, others are there willingly, although it is a very secretive project so it'd be difficult to hear about it. there's a bit of a dystopian/black mirror vibe to this world, where companies now exploit people's grieving with their technology--the trial consists of 5 simulations that last 12 hours, and every 12 hours the patients lose their memories again. there are keepsakes placed in the simulations in order to stimulate a patient's brain in order to remember a core memory that's associated with them. for example, one of the characters lost his brother to a car crash, so in the simulations he is deliberately put in situations to see for the specific model of the car that killed his brother and other things to jog his memory. and the point of the trials is to find someone who is emotionally resistant enough to the keepsakes and can have their memories permanently erased and replaced with new ones. and claire is one of the 9 patients (she's patient 6, hence the 6 in one of her artworks) and is the only person whose memories do not reset between each simulation. the project is ran by a team of 5 exceptional neuroscientists who are aiming to advance the AI resurrection technology.
the protagonist, claire doleful, is a calculating narcissist who doesn't remember anything at all whatsoever about her past, but unlike one would be led to believe by her looks, she is very emotionally impulsive and humorously sensitive to any criticism or rejection. she's the type to hold disproportionate grudges against perceived minor offenses. she is not a good person and that much is obvious. however, because she has no memories and nothing that she cherishes, she feels as if she has nothing keeping her alive. with the simulations, she witnesses the way the other patients cling to memories and the people they cherish despite their overwhelmingly terrible situations/backstories, and it encourages claire to seek out the truth about herself and if there's something in her life that's worth living for.
(more details about the second arc soon!)
