Previous chapter
The night had come and gone; and so did the following morning.
Half of it you spent with your phone nearly glued to your ear; talking to Mallory about what previously had happened with Michael and not to mention going over every detail quite excessively. You didn’t bother to try to talk quietly.. not really giving a fuck if you pissed any of your neighbors off by talking too loudly, because you knew the complaints would all be in Michaels name since he technically owned this apartment. However; trying to talk quietly was not something you could attempt even if you wanted - not while talking to Mallory.
It was hard to not be excessively happy (at the very least) in her presence; she simply radiated that energy to the point where it nearly infected everyone she met or interacted with.. including you.
No one knew better than Mallory did about your certain mental state (except for perhaps.. Michael), so maybe that’s why she seemed especially happy today. Maybe it was just an attempt to get you to smile and well- it worked. For a moment anyway. It worked until you had to hang up the phone because Mallory was still at Robichaux’s and had actual responsibilities..
Responsibilities.. what even were those anymore?
It was nothing that you had.. not with being so caught in the covens new plan and trying literally not to die around Michael or Madison.. you wanted to say it wasn’t fair that others, even Mallory, got to have seemingly easy lives or at the very least weren’t in your current predicament but that was selfish and naive.
You knew better than to think like this..
It was boredom; and seeing Michael just last night perhaps still had you on edge? After all.. things were starting to finally get easier for you so why was your mood not picking up along with it?
“Boredom. Your just bored,” you muttered to yourself with nearly gritted teeth.
You stood up suddenly, opening your phone and immediately going to your messages.. not bothering to read the past conversation that was already open in the app.
‘Would having your address be okay?’
You sent the message to Michael quickly.. or to the number that you knew belonged to Michael; you didn’t have him saved as a contact still. You held your phone; having an odd, intuitive feeling that he would reply right away. You weren’t wrong.
‘My address? Miss me already?’
‘Hah. Funny. Don’t humor yourself. I just wanted our conversation yesterday to continue.’
‘In person? Must be important.’
‘I’d say so.’
Your jaw clenched as you stated at the overly bright saturated screen.
You wanted to say more.. to give yourself a chance to sound more rational and sane, to cement the fact that there was no fucking way that you were talking to him because you missed him like he claimed. But.. you didn’t.
No more arguing.. no more stupid insults.. no more physical altercations.. no more.
Even though you two weren’t in person, this was probably the most normal conversation you two have had.. and that wasn’t something you were eager to ruin.
Your eyes flicked back into focus when you saw a new message appear from Michael, who only replied to state his address.
You didn’t reply; but you figured Michael was smart enough to not need a verbal indication to know that you were coming over. You hoped he was atleast intelligent enough to discern that, anyway.
After quickly looking in the mirror and affirming that you physically appeared decent, you left for Michaels apartment - which luckily was only a few blocks away..
Oh, how lucky you were that you happened to have a ‘soulmate’ who valued convenience..
How fucking lucky.
The walk over went rather quick, and before you knew it, you entered the hotel’s interior.. or what appeared to look like a hotel, anyway. You knew it certainly wasn’t an apartment complex; not a normal one at the very least. Your shoes thudded loudly against the sleek, pristine, marble floors.. you headed straight for the elevator. Not bothering to make eye contact with the receptionist who eyed you suspiciously as if you didn’t belong. And you didn’t. Not technically.. after all you weren’t a resident and you had no plans on renting out a room. Fuck, you didn’t even look like you could- even if you were to lie about it.
It was tempting to continue on thinking that you didn’t belong, because that’s what it truly felt like. You didn’t stick in with Michaels life in any way.. what it really came down too, was the fact that you weren’t Madison.
Sure, the two of you were both witches; and you had plenty in common the more you thought about it - but.. you were still plenty different. The difference mostly was Michael ironically.. although it wasn’t him, himself.
Technically you were closer to Michael than Madison ever could be (not by choice but.. rather by ‘nature’) but you still weren’t what he wanted. You weren’t his type.. not naturally anyway. Sure you were meant to be together for some fucked up reason, but that didn’t change the fact that you two could still barely tolerate each other.. even now.
You were starting to think that you and Michael would never get to the point where you could be called ‘in love’. You would never hold hands, you would never kiss, you would never hold each other or embrace because you truly wanted too.. It would never be genuine.
You knew very well that you might have to kiss Michael in the future if you wanted to sell the lie that atleast you were in love with him, to seduce him but.. you wouldn’t enjoy it. You knew you wouldn’t.. you wouldn’t allow yourself too. Never.
You owed yourself atleast that.
But that being said; you knew you still had to attempt to make the other end of this deal work… the one you had initially agreed to doing with Cordelia.. the one that still Michael knew nothing about. Something you barely felt like you still knew anything about.
You had to try.
You had to.. and your time was now. There would be no backing out or distractions this time.. Not because you didn’t desire any but because there couldn’t be.
Michael couldn’t keep trying to further his plans.. the longer you were to wait and hesitate more than you already had, the more risk you were ultimately taking.
And to be quite frank; you had a lot more to lose than Michael ever did..
You had many valid reasons to carry out your plans on ending Michael, while simultaneously trying to please Cordelia and actually give him a chance romantically.. or at least physically.
Perhaps romance would be thought of another time.. a time where you weren’t about to do this; something vaguely romantic.
Asking a boy to go on a date with you (your soulmate) was never something you would picture yourself doing after you learned exactly who Michael was..
But here you were.
The elevator ride was long and quiet. You stood in the elevator alone; focusing on how difficult your anxiety had made it to breathe.. You tried your best to silently gain control of your breathing as the elevator continued to soar.. you only swallowed and focused your gaze on your hands- trying your best to clear your mind and make sure you went in level headed before you saw Michael. You figured clearing your mind before you talked to Michael was what you would have to do from now on.. if you wanted to get anywhere with him, anyway.
You didn’t jump when the elevator suddenly came to a halt and the doors smoothly opened. You exited as calmly and as ‘normally’ as one possibly could.. your eyes frantically read room numbers on doors as you walked further and further down the hallway..
You didn’t see anyone you recognized still, or anyone at all and you appeared to be on the right floor but that’s not what threw you off..
Shouldn’t there atleast be someone on this floor?
This was Los Angeles after all and the hotel was very much high class.. something didn’t seem right for it to be seemingly entirely empty. Suddenly when you were more than certain that you were alone on this floor.. you saw a sudden dark figure brush past your shoulder.
You wanted to say it was a trick of the light or maybe stress but, something in you knew better than to think that. It was too much of a coincidence, and why were you just now seeing this ‘said’ person in the hallway? Unless they were literally running away from you or purposefully avoiding-
After all, it had to be normal to see figures out of your corner of your eye.. right? Even though you knew this; you still instinctively stopped and turned around.
Your breath hitched in your throat as you instinctively stopped and turned around.. seeing exactly what you feared you would see.
You swore you saw a dash of blonde hair, a figure just hurriedly turning around the far distant corner of the hallway.
Oh fuck no.
You could physically feel the anger and adrenaline pump through your system, and to say it felt overwhelming and terrifying was the biggest understatement you could ever give to pity yourself. Suddenly you felt as if all the blood had been extracted from your veins and replaced with something else, maybe gasoline, because what else would make your veins itch and burn?
It couldn’t solely be because you could’ve saw Madison.. that would be fucking stupid.
The uncomfortable sensation that swarmed under your veins didn’t wane or quit. It stayed with you, as you decided to turn around and stumble toward Michaels apartment. Walking quickly past doors and glancing only long enough to continue to read apartment door numbers.
Not it..
Not it…
No..
God where the fuck was his room?
You shouldn’t have been surprised that his door was at the very end of the hallway.. how could you forget? He had the penthouse with the nicest view.. and Michael would’ve hated it if he knew that you forgot. Lucky for you, he would never know that you thought that. Atleast some things could be kept private between you two.
You quickly knocked on the door. Wincing when you realized that you had learned the hard way how expensive the door was. Your knuckles immediately sore and slightly aching after making contact.
Then you headed in.
You swung the door open carelessly, and loudly. Letting Michael know that you were here without having to pretend to be nice and say ‘hello’.
You walked down the hallway, coming to a sudden halt once Michael quickly appeared a few feet in front of you.. probably to see who just came in unannounced.
“Hey..” you said, rather diminutively. “So.. your not a very good liar-“ you started.
“I thought we already established that I was done fucking lying. I didn’t think you would be coming right away-“
“Bullshit.”
You stopped walking when Michael finally came into view. In fact; you really stopped doing everything.
Your breath and current, stupid, toxic mindset melted away when you saw him.. as if the breath had been knocked clean from your lungs.
It didn’t make sense.. you hadn’t felt this way about anyone in a long time. Especially ever with Michael, out of everyone to feel this ‘weird’ way around. It made you feel almost sickly.. or your sure you probably would’ve been sick if Michael wasn’t currently staring at you like how he currently was.
Almost as if he knew how you currently felt.
“y/n? Are you feeling okay?” He asked slowly. The register of his voice appeared to be lower than it typically was.. something that certainly piqued your interest.
You knew you must be dissociating because suddenly you looked up and Michael was standing right in front of you.. no longer at the other end of the hallway but maybe a foot or two away.
His eyes which were previously locked onto yours traveled just a hair south.
At first you were questioning what exactly he was looking at until you saw the back of his hand raise up; and it was crystal clear what he was trying to do.
Your cheeks were hot, and you knew Michael was raising his hand to check and to feel them.. was it that obvious how much you were currently panicking?
You suppose so.
You gently brushed Michaels hand away.. accidentally catching it with yours in the process.
Fuck.
You nor Michael dared to intertwine your hands even more so they already were.. your fingers barely brushing past another (more so stumbling than anything) but still desperately avoided the inevitable.
It was inevitable..
That was something that you desperately wanted to argue or disprove but you couldn’t. You knew that was the truth more so than anything but, even now that it would happen eventually.. showing any visible signs to Michael that you even thought of him in a slight fond manner was too much. It just wasn’t something you were willing to do at the moment.
“I’m okay. I swear, you don’t have to check,” you said with a giggle, a bit it too bashfully than you had initially intended.
Fuck.
Michael first opened his mouth - his lips slightly parted and his face looked wore a look of utter confusion. However; that didn’t really last. His normal facial expression of appearing non bothered and in control came back; something that sort of weirdly comforted you since you were so used to seeing him like this.
How predictable.
“I’m sorry for my.. lack of control in my behavior. I wasn’t expecting you-“
“That’s clear why.. I know who you had over earlier.” You were left breathless after your words.. chest heaving with anticipation and sudden, horrid doubt that was really only directed at yourself.
What if Michael just denied it and didn’t even want to talk about this?
Trying to manipulate Michael would never work.. but there was really no other option. You needed to stop brushing things off and shoving shit down; communicating with Michael was really the only choice you could make now. It was really your only chance, too.
“Are you talking about Madison?” Michael’s stoic face turned into a almost comedic sneer, almost like he was just processing his words as he spoke them.
“Yeah. I-I know it was her, Michael. and I’m not mad.. I’m really not. I promise I honestly don’t care but, it’s clear seeing her has.. affected you and your emotions,” you started to speak impossibly slowly. Your words were already predetermined in your head but.. saying them out loud, to Michael who wasn’t always the most understanding was what started to get to you.
But so did the now apparent silence.
Michael only made eye contact with you for a brief moment before suddenly looking down and away; almost in a embarrassed manner.
The antichrist? Embarrassed?
It felt almost like betrayal to not feel honored by that.
That thought alone made you nauseous.
“Which isn’t a bad thing; I just wanted to say that my intentions-“ you continued.
“No. Y/n stop, this wasn’t about you, actually,” Michael suddenly cut in, a bit too harshly for your liking.
You could only swallow and sit in silence for a brief moment before responding. You knew he was referring to his ‘meeting’ with Madison.. if it could even really be called that.
“Okay. I guess I should say I’m sorry then.. I shouldn’t have came unannounced,” you sorely admitted.
“No. It’s okay. I’m glad you came if you needed something,” he retorted back sarcastically.
Needed something.. that was a eccentric way of putting it but he wasn’t wrong exactly, either.
“It’s not that I exactly need anything.. the only thing I want from you is the truth.. I only thought we would be seeing her together-“
“We will. We still are, definitely now after today.”
“When?” You boldly bit back.
Michael looked caught off guard but it didn’t last. There was only a brief flash of fear, aloofness that was only present in his eyes. The rest of him never really bothered to show emotion.. not unless he really cared about someone.
Like Madison.
You knew that Madison wouldn’t bother leaving his apartment unless she knew that she would see him again.. that much you knew after just generally existing around her. Because with Madison, there was no living with her or co existing peacefully.. that just was something she would never be capable of.
Deciding to look back into Michaels eyes was a mistake. The brief confusion was long gone and now.. all you could make out was something short of a disturbance. Like he was unsettled, on edge, perhaps.. even paranoid, if you didn’t know better but after all; Michael wasn’t ordinary.
“Tonight. And I wish I could give you my deepest apologies but, your presence is promised to be there so.. I need you to be there.” His words were spoken not as if they were final, but not to be bargained with. A snarl glimmered behind them but not one could you dared to think about any longer than you had too.
Tonight?
“Is this a joke? I can’t.. I just can’t go. I’m not seeing her tonight, I’m sorry but.. why so soon?”
Michael stood behind the couch still. His eyes stayed fixated on your frame as you spoke. You walked back over to his couch to atleast make yourself comfortable as you and Michael spoke but he seemed amused enough to watch.
You didn’t know whether to decipher his actions of watching endearing or.. stalker like.
Maybe both.
“I know you don’t like to stick around me for more than 3 hours tops, let alone see me twice in one day but you should get used to it. We need to see each other more,” He answered.
You broke eye contact to marvel at the soft, plush rugs that lined the floor.
“It’s not that. It’s not you,” you cringed at yourself internally for how weak you sounded when you spoke. Your voice delicately shaking and threatening to break with every syllable.. it was dumb. “It’s just.. I don’t think I should see her again, not right now.” Your sentence ended abruptly. You hadn’t anticipated to stop talking but the words came to a halt on their own.. not wanting to say more than you needed too.
However, Michael himself did not seem very moved at your words or understanding in the slightest.
You felt dumb (once again) for not anticipating Michaels reaction- or lack thereof.. was better stated.
He sort of calmly walked up to you; his pace was surely a bit quicker than it normally was but that didn’t exactly allude to anything. That only meant that he perhaps was walking faster on his way to you.. which meant-
“Well I hope you left time to mentally prepare yourself because your seeing her tonight. I’m glad you came to talk to me.”
“So soon?” You ‘not so’ bravely teased.
“Yes,” Michael responded quickly with a face and tone that radiated sudden gravitas. “Your seeing her tonight but, you’ll be seeing others too.”
“So this event isn’t exclusive?”
Michaels gaze bore into yours with more intensity this time; if that was even possible.
“No.. it is. Your misunderstanding the situation. You’ll be meeting.. some people who are very close to me.”
You didn’t intentionally mean to glare at Michael when you heard his words.. originally, you meant to calmly reply and to figure out what the fuck you were apparently accompanying him with tonight but; to no avail. Your eyes squinted as you tried to focus and think.. it was more than obvious that Michael wasn’t alluding to any family he had.
Michael was never really close to any of his family like that.. but there was still one group of people that he was still close with.
A certain group of people that you had the cardinal pleasure of being able to meet once upon a nightmare..
“with Madison?” You asked.
“Yes. She’ll be there, and it’s vital that you are too,” The rather sudden desperation that festered in his blue eyes threatened to seep into yours.
As much as you wanted to sheepishly look away and give an excuse; you couldn’t.
You stared back, almost in a daring way into his blue irises. Sure; you didn’t know what tonight entailed but you also weren’t a fan of surprises. Not when your fate temporarily lied in Michaels hands.. anyway.
“Vital?”
“Yes. Vital. Please.“
“Fine. I’ll go then,” you sourly agree.
You know that Michael purposefully backed you into a (metaphorical) corner; but this time- you weren’t finding yourself absolutely ridden with anger or thoughts of revenge.
You almost felt.. happy, you could say.
This would give you and Michael a chance. This is exactly what you and Michael needed.. an excuse to be around each other but not something that was exactly planned or that could be foreseen. This meeting; or you should say, tonight would truly allow you to see if you seducing Michael could really work. You needed to see how him and Madison interacted with each other, again.
You expected that Michael would simply give you a half glance, a hum and then would’ve considered you dismissed in his presence but instead he allowed you to simmer in his stare.
The impulse to scream captured your throat once you felt something suddenly bring your attention away from his eyes. Michaels long, slender fingers wrapped tightly and firmly on your wrist is what brought you out of this sudden trance. Instinctively you tried to pull your wrist back but, Michael wasn’t budging. If anything.. his grip only tightened.
“Listen, I’m not asking you to come, I’m telling you. You have no idea how important tonight is for me and you cannot fuck it up,” Michael said with something that was either a faint tremble or snarl.
You tried to study his features, to try and find some temporary source of comfort to ease the blow of his words but.. you found nothing. Nothing but faint anger.
“What’s so important tonight?”
Michael licked his lips, and his eyes flickered down as if he was trying his best to disguise how suddenly confused he felt that you actually didn’t try to argue. You tried your best not to acknowledge to him that you noticed this.
“That’s not for you to worry about. Just, wear something nice and I’ll see you tonight at 9. Okay?”
“Okay..” you responded. Your words lingering far longer than you intended them too, due to the fact of how puzzled you were. “Right. I’ll see you,” you said with a strangled voice.
You tried to keep your head down as you exited the apartment and headed for yours. Desperately trying to keep your mind off exactly what Michael needed you so badly for tonight.
