There really is no end to nepo babies isn't there? i feel like I discover a new one I never knew about every other week.
Saw someone complain about fat women being in a game set in ancient Rome, because tHEre WerE No FaT WOmEN iN AnCIEnt ROmE.
No fat women in ancient Rome? The place infamous for lavish parties. Infamous for people throwing up to go back for more food? The place infamous for its decadence??
Also, it just taking defeating one(1) supe to get to Homelander, was another thing that contributed to the finale feeling so incredibly small.
Every single circumstance that created Homelander still exists, but somehow I am supposed to see his defeat as a victory?
The Boys writers' room desperately needed a cheat sheet on what each supes powers were, how strong they were and how strong they were in relation to other supes.
So, things I did actually like in this season of The Boys
A-Train's death, the whole chase and what he says to Homelander as he is killing him
Frenchie's line to Homelander just before dying
Homelander almost killing the audience who saw the Flight 37 video
Homelander losing his powers before he dies
Firecracker dying just after betraying the last part of her own beliefs
Ok so the boys has gone so downhill and it’s so sad :/ I’m sure all this has been said by now, and spoiler warning obs, but:
Sage is meant to be the smartest person in the world but they honestly barely write her as smart at all… unless there’s a big twist still coming about secret plans within plans, but I doubt it??? I truly don’t understand how she actually thought that seeing some footage of homelander having sex with stormfront would be enough to make soldier boy want his own son dead, when a) soldier boy already knew homelander and stormfront were a thing, and b) bashley JUST told her that she saw inside soldier boy’s mind and he was ‘secretly proud’ of homelander. Like… after hearing that she still thinks it’s so ’impossible’ that soldier boy might want to save homelander’s life that she banks her whole plan on it. Ummm. That’s kinda stupid even by normal person standards.
Soldier boy being in undying love with stormfront is SUCH an obvious retcon they’ve shoved into the show to set things up for ‘vought rising’, and I don’t buy it… if she was sooo special and beloved to him, wouldn’t she have been the first person he asked about and went looking for after waking up? Going from them not mentioning each other at all, to the mere memory of her being his main motivation, is really lazy and sloppy ngl.
I get why the writers wouldn’t want to have this actually happen, but it’s bizarre to me that in allllll this tedious endless angsting over the virus and the v1 and immortality as a curse etc, NO ONE has even floated the idea of soldier boy taking away Annie and kimiko’s powers to make them immune to the virus. No one even suggested it as a crazy plan z. Like it’s kind of an obvious solution to everything they’re fretting over, yet seemingly it hasn’t occurred to any of them. Riiiiight.
The flip flopping around on kimchie is really annoying at this point… after waiting 4 seasons for them to get together the writers couldn’t just let them be a couple, but instead almost immediately started dropping hints that they actually don’t work together… except now suddenly kimiko is willing to sign up for an everlasting life she doesn’t want for frenchie’s sake?? I don’t know who they think they are writing any of this for. If you ship it this is just frustrating bullshit, and if you don’t ship it it’s a waste of valuable screen time. Meanwhile hughie and Annie have almost never worked well as a couple yet they’re clearly shaping up to be the big endgame ship. Ok sure.
I will say that the legend having a rapport with homelander was actually genuinely interesting and I hope that leads to something, but I seriously doubt it at this point. Oh well. At least the first three seasons were good.
I wish we were getting more gen v :(
Saying you've known the end of your show since the pilot isn't impressive when it's obvious you haven't been working towards it at all.
The show just feels so small in its final season. We BARELY get to see what is happening in the world at large and how every day people are dealing with Homelander and his ilk creating a dictatorship.
The consequence is that even though Homelander etc are deemed evil enough to stop at any means, but they don't even come close to the evil we see all around us right now.
Yeah, as a serial killer, I guess Homelander was pretty bad, but as a dictator he is basically toothless.
And no, a few throw away lines does not work.
It feels like Kripke only had ideas for a closing movie for the boys, so he dicked around for 6/8 episodes, then managed to run out of time in the finale where he basically goes note by note to end out the series.
It feels like he got handed a list of bullet points that people said they wanted closure on, and instead of using that to write a story, he wrote a short scene for every bullet point and smacked them all together in about an hour's runtime.
Not even Ashley finally growing a spine for two seconds was satisfying. It just all feels so rushed.
Why is this show so unwilling to confront the idea that supes are bad not because Homelander exists, but because the power they have. There will always be a Homelander. And frankly, going by the show's canon, he isn't close to the worst there could be.
The Boys accomplished nothing. And they didn't even bother addressing the elephant in the room: what do we do about supes?
Can we depower them? Can we stop Vought from creating more supes? How do we prevent Homelander 2.0.
The show started so great, approaching a superhero world from the perspective of the average joe and criticising how other superhero media projects handle supes. No, it isn't good that there are humans who are weapons of mass destruction.
But by the end of the show the writers just see it as a universal truth that having supes is great! Its all great! Just kill the fascist ones, keep an eye on the baddies, and let Vought go on doing whatever it's doing.
It's so boring and exactly the same as every other popular superhero piece of media.
The worst part of this final episode is the fact that you can *feel* Kripke thinks he's being profound.
Not to be a bitch, but how stupid is Eric Kripke that he thinks the best way to show a character is no longer 'super smart' is by showing they can't quote Othello by heart anymore.
Imagine a The Boys season 5 where Frenchie and Soldier Boy died in the first episode:
- we'd see the virus as an actual threat
- the V1 goose chase would not happen
- Homelander would look to Ryan to replace the family shaped whole Soldier Boy left behind
- we'd see Kimiko immediately lose her voice again, after *just* getting it back
- we'd be spared Kimiko's cringe dialogue this season
- 90% of the season wouldn't be a VR ad
Eric Kripke is so bad at writing smart characters, he's making me feel dumb.
Because I still had the tiniest of tiny hopes that Sage had in fact predicted that SB would give his on again off again son V1, and she was just playing it up to not give the game away. But no, he's just they stupid, because Kripke is that stupid.
