Painting the ocean is calming to me. The ocean has been a huge part of my life. I used to live near the beach in PR. So the nostalgia of going to the beach and having fun is something I miss. The good thing is the ocean isn’t going away. But the ocean is never still, and life is like this too. So changes are inevitable. Step 5 creating a painting This is the final step! At this stage I add highlights. Highlights? Yes!!! ✨💡🌟 Here I start to paint the bright part of the eye. The purpose of this step is to make the painting stand out! Colors that stand out are : white, yellow, light blues, light reds(pink or flesh tone), light purples. Remember, if your painting has shadows, adding the highlight will make it shine! Contrast people contrast! It is good to mix a light color other than straight white. It helps make your subject look natural and catches attention. Remember if you make a mistake... just paint over it! At this step I am DONE with my painting. I sign the painting and that’s it. Step 4 creating a painting In this step, I paint the sketch. I am only using one color here because I felt like it. If you are using more than one color, take a good look at your subject and paint what you see. Painting the colors where you see them helps to create a likeness. Step 3 creating a painting Now I sketch out my subject. The subject can be anything. For example: a face, a landscape, an ocean wave, fruit, objects at home etc I suggest simple subjects you feel comfortable with. Here I sketched out my eyes with paint. You can draw the sketch with a pencil, but only when its dried. I don’t recommend drawing a sketch if you are oil painting. Only do it at the first step. Step 2 of creating a painting In this step I created some texture. I create texture by moving the brush liberally up and down. You can create textures by pressing the brush, scraping, doing swirling movements, etc If you are content with the texture you have made, then we move on to the next step. Almost done with this little wave! I have been painting small ocean seascapes non stop! They are calming and inspiring to look at. I wake up in the morning and see these small paintings with joy. Painting these small canvases in bed is a lot of fun. I don’t feel such pressure of having a lot of materials with me. I usually use two to three brushes. In this painting I blocked out all the major shapes of color with one brush. Then I use a smaller brush for the details to come. Here are some late night sketches. Even though I sketch very loosely, I find that these sketches have emotions in them. The first portrait sketch startles me everytime. The man with the strawberries seems to desire to eat the strawberries. But it’s like a longing he feels. Like the strawberries are there but he can’t eat them.
