I remember coming home from kindergarten one day, which at the time was a half day, and when I came in the door my mom had a group of ladies over. They were drinking coffee out of white cups. I remember how fascinated I was with the arced imprints left by their red or pink lipsticks. It must be nice to be grown up and drink coffee and leave pretty colors behind on the rim of the cup so that even when they all left the house, their colors would remain. They were talking about a woman named Marta Beckett. She was a dancer who bought a theater in Death Valley less than an hour from where I lived called the Amargosa Opera House. She danced variations from different ballets at noon every day, even if no one came to watch her. “Even if no one is there?” One woman asked. “Yes,” sad another “isn’t that the strangest thing?” But I didn’t think it was strange. I thought it was like hearing there is a kind of undiscovered magic, this idea that someone out there committed themselves to the act of making something beautiful every single day...even if no one was watching. #dance #amargosaoperahouse #ballet #balletdancer #photography #fineartphotography #writing

For the month of April, 10% of the profits on my fine art prints will be donated to the LAM Foundation. I was diagnosed with LAM...lymphangioleiomyomatosis five years ago. This rare disease primarily affects women in their childbearing years. As the smooth muscle of the lungs fill with cysts, breathing becomes difficult. My cysts are “too many to count” according to my doctor. While I’m often frightened by the implications of loosing my ability to breathe, like most people who have faced the reality of their mortality, I truly value the gift of each breath. I’ve had an wonderful experience through @newdo_ballet and @civicsymphonygb while helping provide arts programming to a few assisted living facilities. I’ve met some incredible people...many of whom had never taken a dance or painting lesson before! Everyone has a story. There was the still very beautiful woman who lost her first child in San Bernardino and drove all the way back to Wisconsin to bury here body at home. She was amazed to learn I had lived there too. There were many veterans of WWII, including this former infantryman pictured above, who fought in the Pacific. When I told him both my grandpas also fought in the Pacific, one in the Navy and the other in the Army Air Force, he asked what plane my grandpa flew. When I told him he flew an A 20, this tough former truck driver got tears in his eyes and said, “well, a few of those planes saved my life.” An incredible opportunity made possible by @ggbcfoundation
