Lucy Gray Baird.
Lucy Gray Baird.

Another Austen illustrations! I was commissioned by dear Kate to redraw my old Austen drawings, so I was kind of trying the style I use to have back in 2016, it was actually pretty fun to do! :> commissions/store/ko-fi/instagram

Do you feel held by him? Is he a home to you?
finally watched midsommar and
they were all terrible anthropology students, like what the hell were they even learning in their classes
honestly, how did mark not know that they were going to a place with little nighttime. heâs an anthropology student, thatâs like 99% research. you think heâd have been able to look up basic facts about his travel destination.
josh was the only half decent anthropologist, but honestly when they say they donât want you to take pictures donât. take. pictures.
(not that he deserved to die for this, it was just a real dick move)
i genuinely didnât dislike christian at all until he threw josh under the bus after the book was âstolenâ. he was just a flawed dude making a lot of bad choices, but he wasnât like evil. he was, however, a bad anthropology student.
i loved dani, but wow did she allow herself to be pulled into a cult. but it isnât surprising, she was depressed and traumatized, and the harga just continued to drug and traumatize her until she was on their side. like she went from losing her family to suicide/murder, to watching two people commit suicide, and then watching her boyfriend âcheatâ on her. the harga really broke her down to build her up how they wanted her and it worked.
there is some real sketchy shit re the harga + race + disability
it was really funny to go from appreciating at the start how they put dani in comfortable clothing rather than sexualizing her, to near the end when we had just. a room full of naked women. at least we saw christian naked too, i do respect them for going full frontal male nudity.
the ending, though moving and beautiful, did not feel the least bit empowering. it just felt sad. there was that release of her grief and her relationship, but itâs impossible to ignore that sheâs now going to live a life with like zero privacy and then be forced to commit suicide at the age of 72.
the use of runes throughout the film was A++. i was sitting their the whole time with my rune app open and translating every single one i saw. the table in the shape of the rune for family, the hay at the end saying peace and harmony, the runes at the top of the cliff saying travel and the reversed protection/opportunity rune meaning instead a lack of protection/ decline, meaning they were going to travel unprotected by falling. they really did it well.
the cinematography and production design really take the cake. itâs such a a different palette than youâd expect in a horror film, and they really used the camera to disorient the audience. one of the earliest examples of this was inverting the camera while they were driving, and only righting it when they passed the sign for their destination, suggesting that we were now entering a different world.
i really respect the filmâs score because it too felt like it was wailing like the family would wail in empathy with each other.
âShe has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful.â Ari Aster.
