If you are looking at the coronavirus pandemic, shrugging your shoulders, and saying “well, the best thing we can do is pray” or “it’s not that bad!” and not taking any preventative measures to stop this virus from spreading, you are deliberately putting the most vulnerable people in our communities at risk. You are not “proving your faith in God” by putting “everything in His hands”, you are sinning. People - the elderly, younger children, the immuno-compromised among us - are at a greater risk of dying, because you are choosing to be idle.
The rhetoric of “it’s all in God’s hands” is extremely dangerous, the religiously-fueled denial of knowledge and science when it comes to things like diseases is extremely dangerous.
Is everything ultimately in God’s hands? Absolutely, yes, but we must also do our part instead of sitting around and patting yourself on the back about how much you trust God because you’re just gonna pray that this goes away, so wash your fucking hands, limit your contact with people if you can, stay home when you are sick if you can, and sneeze/cough into the crook of your elbow.

if non-muslims may not wear hijabs then non-christians shouldn't wear crosses.

There... are non-Musims who wear hijabs. Christians and Jews often wear them in Muslim-majority countries, and there are atheists from Muslim families in the West who continue to wear hijabs (some for cultural reasons, which is fine, but others because they don’t want their families to know they are atheists, which is sad)
I think what they’re trying to say is that you shouldn’t just be wearing it as a fashion accessory. While there are exceptions, generally women will not wear a hijab unless for a religious devotion or serious cultural practice.
If I decided to wear a hijab tomorrow I’m pretty sure everybody would call me out for cultural appropriation, because I am not Muslim and have zero connection to middle eastern cultures. But you have people openly saying stuff like “can’t I just be Catholic for the #aesthetic” and people don’t think that’s a problem. It’s like they see Catholicism and Christianity as just some feature and style of the West rather than an actual religion
I mean, even there, that still sounds roughly analogous to those atheists from Muslim families who continue to wear the hijab. I don’t think I’ve ever met a non-Christian who wears the cross who didn’t have some prior connection to Christianity, you know? Have you?
I can think of at least one girl at my school who wears a big old chunky cross despite having no familial or personal connection to Christianity at all - I asked! You can buy sets of jewellery that include a cross anywhere. It’s seen to be a goth/punk symbol as well, in some cases perhaps before it’s seen to be a Christian symbol.

And then look at this - for goodness’ sake, this is so clearly based off the rosary. People are wearing this because it’s punk and rebellious, mainly people who don’t even know what a rosary is!

u kno. lgbt ppl who, despite abuse from religious family members or the church themselves, feel a strong connection to their faith and choose to be active within it are legitimately and genuinely incredibly brave
But also, if you cannot approach your faith/religion because of scars related to abuse you suffered or continue to suffer, you’re brave and valid. Also your longing for participation/practice but the inability to do so at the moment isn’t seen as abandonment, lack of faith, or cowardliness, your longing in itself speaks volumes of the waves of your faith, desire, and love for your faith/religion and I promise you although this longing is silent it is heard and heard so loudly to the ears that matter.

Rise
When it comes to repentance, to be blunt - I can’t.
C.S. Lewis gives the best explanation of my fundamental problem,
“It needs a good person to repent. And here comes the catch. Only a bad person needs to repent: only a good person can repent perfectly. The worse you are the more you need it and the less you can do it.”
I literally am not capable of repenting. Not on my own.
It takes humility to admit that I cannot do it on my own. But it is in that humility that I open the door to the help that I cannot do without.
As St. James puts it in today’s first reading, “God resiststhe proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Yet even humility will not let me do it on my own. Humility merely makes it possible to receive the help that I cannot do without. Again, from C.S. Lewis,
“Can we do it if God helps us? Yes, but what do we mean when we talk of God helping us? We mean God putting into us a bit of Himself, so to speak.
He lends us a little of His reasoning powers and that is how we think: He puts a little of His love into us and that is how we love one another.
When you teach a child writing, you hold its hand while it forms the letters: that is, it forms the letters because you are forming them.
We love and reason because God loves and reasons and holds our hand while we do it.”
And so it is with repentance. God must lend me a little of Himself.
I am able to repent because God humbles Himself to hold my hand while I do it.
This is the summons of Lent.
This is the road to repentance.
It begins here. It begins in humility. And it begins now.
Rise, we must be going.
