What I really need everyone like this to understand is that queer people have no responsibility to watch a show with canon representation if that show doesn’t appeal to them. Smugly recommending She-ra to someone who wishes there were more queer people in adult-orientated crime thrillers is ridiculous, annoying, and unhelpful. Queer people are allowed to have varying tastes in media, and blaming queer fans who want to watch shows that actually appeal to their tastes for not getting to see themselves in those shows because they could have just watched She-ra is victim-blaming.

All through the 2010s there has been a Good Gay Show Du Jour that every wlw fan was expected to watch and appreciate. Before She-ra, Wynonna Earp was the show that got smugly recommended every time something bad happened in another queer fandom. Before Wynonna Earp it was Carmilla, before Carmilla it was Orphan Black, before Orphan Black it was Lost Girl. All of those shows skew young and white. They’re all very cis and very abled. Between all of them, there’s a grand total of two queer women characters who are canonically gender nonconforming in any significant way. None of these shows are good representation for everyone. All of them best represent young, white, cis, femme, abled women, and y’all need to stop pushing shows like that as the end-all be-all of wlw rep that everyone is obligated to watch and relate to. It makes it super transparent which queer women you think are worth caring about.

It’s not, nor has it ever been, pathetic to watch a show with no canon representation because you’re interested in the plot and to ship a non-canon ship. It’s not, nor has it ever been, pathetic to not be willing to watch every single show that’s got a canon f/f couple regardless of genre or target audience. It’s not, nor has it ever been, pathetic to enjoy finding a queer reading where one wasn’t intended. What is pathetic is victim-blaming other queer fans for the homophobia they experience because they’re not in the Good Gay Fandom Du Jour. “If you watch a show that didn’t advertise itself as the Next Gay Thing, you deserve whatever homophobia it gives you” is not the progressive stance you think it is.
