for me the core difference between Hickey&Gibson relationship and that of Hickey&Tozer is the power dynamics of them, the patterns in which the characters follow each other (or not).

hickgib are more or less equal in their subjectivity; both of them have strong ideas about what should be done. when Gibson complies with Hickey’s ideas, it is a compromise — he doesn’t want it, he doesn’t agree with it, but he actively chooses to follow because he loves the man. for Tozer it’s exactly vice versa: he loves because there is this urge to follow and an appropriate place for it; and Hickey is more than happy to provide him a figure of worship — an idol, or a messiah, or a carnal deity.

so yeah tl;dr imo hickgib is an inherently troubled alliance of equals (any alliance of equals is troubled for that matter) and hicktoz is a fecund soil for self-indulgence which can be made use of for good or for bad

for some time i've engaged in fan studies (before deciding that my brain chemistry is too broken to actually survive through endless rounds of proving that delusional outsiders on the web ARE a important part of society and valid research topic) and back then i've taken particular interest in acafandom as some sort of exchange zone between 'high-brow' and 'low-brow' cultures. so what i want to say is -- the terror fandom is a particularly interesting case for that one
