Basic summary: Mabel goes missing when she and Dipper were kids playing around/exploring an abandoned buildings. After months, Mabel is considered dead, but Dipper refuses to move on.

She actually fell through a rift and ended up with Ford, so it's a bit like Drifting Stars but earlier and not as depressing (for Stan. It's very depressing for Dipper).

Basic Dipper design:

Long hair: he stopped caring about cutting it and it only got cut cause his parents didn't really like how much he looked like Mabel

Sweater with stretched neck: He's an anxious guy, ofc, and he doesn't particularly like the yarn on his neck all the time. This was Mabel's favorite sweater, and so the one Dipper wears most, it's also the most frayed from him chewing on it.

Dipper, out of spite, swears he won't like Grunkle Stan and he won't make friends. this changes over the course of the summer ofc

don't worry! they do reunite after Not What He Seems and surely no weirdmageddon will happen surely everything will be fine

Dipper realized at some point, that he would one day grow out of Mabel's sweaters since they're just kids. he decides the best way to prevent growing would be to stop eating, and that spirals into a whole thing that, surprise surprise, doesn't magically get fixed when Mabel gets back.
