“You’re telling me,” you laugh. You begin to help him drag the bodies away, careful to follow exactly what he does and where he puts them. You glance over as if to confirm you haven’t made a mistake.
“I hope you don’t mind if I have some tea, then,” you continue, “to soothe my nerves,” you explain. You let some of your anxiety peak through your friendly expression. Hopefully, he’ll assume you’re only frazzled about the undead. Truthfully, it’s worrisome that he seems so hesitant to be around you, and though you’d like to say you don’t let it bother you, it’s bothering you a lot. What have you done wrong?
You go back to setting up the tent. Might as well get that squared away. You’ll move onto getting you ‘dex sorted afterwards. You keep an eye on Seftis in the meantime, watching his body language and expressions. “You’re from around here, then?”
You notice her glance over at you as you pile the dead bodies on top of each other and stand a little straighter, hold your head a little higher. She’s looking to you as an example and you can’t help but swagger a little. You drag the corpses far enough away that you don’t have to worry about the smoke, slosh lighter fluid on the pile and set it alight.
Brushing off your hands you head on back to camp, scratching your hair as you do.
“Yeah basically,” you say. “I’m outside of my usual range but I’m as from here as you can get.” You sweep a hand around you, at the flat, flat landscape. “And you can’t really say it’s all that different anyway.”
You settle down crosslegged next to the fire, careful not to touch any of her belongings. There are plenty of spores out here in the desert, but you really can’t be too careful.
“What are you out here for anyway?” you ask.
"Oh I don't know about that," you say, "I may not be in the area as often as you, but..." You trail off thoughtfully and make certain the ties won't be easily jostled by the average undead. You're always thorough during this, but, well, not necessarily this thorough. You're a lot more rattled by this than you're willing to let on.
"I've been in the hills, near oases and the bases of the mountains, the coastline! And- they're all interesting. Maybe not the most hospitable or beautiful places I've been, but- There's reasons to like or dislike the... what, sub-biomes? I just find the deserts kind of, almost charming." You cringe a bit and grimace apologetically at him. "I probably sound a bit touched, don't I?" You tap your temple to clarify. "Sorry..."
There's a protein bar in your dex. You take it out and bite into it. You're not especially hungry, but it's an excuse to shut up for a bit. "To answer your question," you say after a spell of embarrassed silence, "I'm on a fetch quest. I can't properly explore until I've brought back proof there's something to be found." You don't go on. You don't want to be any more of an obnoxious know-it-all than you've just made yourself.

You’re concerned when he hesitates, but you brush it off when he takes your hand. “It’s lovely to meet you, Seftis.” Heck, you’re grateful enough to overlook his obvious unwillingness to shake your hand.
“I had… no idea, I’ve been in and out of deserts for a few sweeps and never seen so many in one place. That’s a little scary,” you say with a laugh, because you cannot say Wow, I can’t believe how many times I could have died without having any idea. I’m an idiot, and I want to be out of this choirs-forsaken wasteland post haste.
“Yeah, I mean,” you continue, “it’s not like I can do much else now, so close to morning.” You look around at your little site. You need to finish setting up the tent, and your sylladex is still filled with your supplies- “Oh, I’ve an electric kettle in my ‘dex. The least I can do for my rescuer is offer him a cuppa! Unless… you probably have to get to, wherever before sunrise, don’t you?”
You rub the back of your neck as you stammer out, “I er- um, no I don’t have to be anywhere, but-” but you don’t want to infect anything important she has on her, but also that you don’t want to just leave, and let a friendly encounter go to waste, especially since you’re not hungry.
“I’d love to stay awhile,” you say as you start dragging walker bodies further away from the camp. “But I’ll pass on the tea. Friendly company is a little lacking this far into the desert.”
You wonder what she’s here for anyway. In and out of the desert for sweeps? It doesn’t look like she’s native around here at any rate.

You have to crane your neck to look up at her. You wonder if she noticed the walkers weren’t attacking you. She’s smiling and friendly though, so you’re guessing she’s didn’t. You do wonder if she’ll notice if you don’t shake her hand. Well, if she was going to get infected then it would probably because she was just in a fight with a dozen daywalkers and not because she shook your glove.
“Hi, er,” you say again, and gingerly shake her outstretched hand before snatching it back. “I’m Seftis.”
You look back down at the piled bodies of the undead and scratch your head.
“Not that uncommon if you draw some attention,” you say. “Daywalkers tend to horde when they hear prey and converge. They can gather momentum pretty quickly really. Hordes can get big.”
You wave a hand at her half set up camp.
“You staying here for the day then?” you ask.

Fighting walkers again is almost a relief. They’re mindless moving corpses, easy enough to predict and it was like an old hobby you haven’t picked up in a while. It was easier to fight zombies than it was to think about your particular situation anyway. Once you figure out how to ignore the urge to attack her, the actual combat isn’t too bad.
Still, it’s a little weird to be fighting with a partner who wasn’t a yellowblood, and also not tossing around bodies and boulders every which way with his mind. She was about the same height though. What was with everyone being so damn tall around here?
You cut down the last walker, panting as you wipe the nonexistent sweat off your forehead and turn to the strange troll you just helped.
“So- uh,” you say, squinting up at her. “Hi.”
You’re a real smooth operator, aren’t you.
From your POV zombies are fucking impossible to predict. While you pride yourself on being able to read your average troll, zombies are... strange. When you wound them, they don’t recoil. They move forward with no regard for your sword or their safety. They barely bleed.
You startle when... whoever this is kills a zombie behind you. You’d already relaxed like the goddamn amateur you are. It’s a struggle not to curl into yourself, to keep your head high and smile your warmest, friendliest smile (the one Seolfr says could launch a thousand ships), but you manage with a bit of blushing.
“Thank you,” you say, somewhat sheepish. “I don’t think I liked my chances on my own, there. I’m Teylir,” you add, and offer your hand. “That many in one place, that’s weird, right?” You ask half as a serious question and half as a rhetorical.
Hamilton: You’re cute when you get angry.
Eliza: *glares*

Staring into the bared teeth of a revenant, you have to wonder… what the hell gives? Of all the times you’ve ventured into the desert, you’ve rarely seen more than a few zombies at once. This is, what, a dozen? More? This totally can’t be normal.
Expert swordsman or not, there’s only so much you can handle, and hell if you want to get close enough really go at this. Zombies are not in your repertoire. Their advance forces your retreat, and you’re barely keeping your head above water in this fight. Er, so to speak. Very few of the zombies are tall enough to clear your shoulders, but really, that isn’t helping the awkwardness.
Not to mention it’s approaching daylight, and you’re a little too preoccupied to set up camp. You need a way to end this, and soon.
Dust clouds rise on the horizon of the desert and you frown. It looks like a bit of a daywalker horde- you should know. Back when you did this as a hobby that was a sign that you had to run, if you were alone, or that a competition was on, if Birany was there.
Still, it was strange that so many converged in so sparse a spot- wait was that a troll in the middle there? You start forward at a jog, drawing your machetes.
You’ve avoided daywalkers in the desert so far. You’re not sure how you’d react now that you were one of them. Still, if you left now, the living troll would probably no longer be alive, so there was only one thing your conscience could bear.
As you draw closer you can see the one living troll fighting furiously among a small horde, next to the beginnings of a camp. Instantly you feel the urge to join the undead, to bite, devour- the plants in your old scars stirring.
Instead you thrust one blade into the back of a zombie and decapitate it with the other. They’re not attacking you. They recognize you as their own, you realize. At the very least the daywalker infection gave you that advantage. It’s been nothing but a pain in the ass otherwise.
You grit your teeth as you fight, very aware of the living troll and her aliveness, but channeling the urge to attack her to fighting the undead.
That the undead don’t once turn on your hero, not even when his machetes cut into them, hardly escapes your notice. You don’t need the whispering voice in your pan to know that’s off. Still, you’re grateful. You no longer need to worry about the approach of the rearmost zombies, though you’re still on the retreat and desperate to avoid being surrounded.
You take a few big steps back and behead the nearest shambler. It’s inefficient and clumsy. You may have mastery of your specibus, but there is no established form for fighting the undead. You look like a damn fool with a pointy stick. Some silly airheaded blueblood who needs a rescue. Stupid.
That thought distracts you enough that you stumble and nearly fall over a patch of dry grass. You could just die. You spill the next revenant’s guts into the sand with a more forceful strike than strictly necessary.
And, if at the end of the fight you’re more focused on the mess in front of you than any approaching danger, more power to that jasminum walker at your six.
