My roommate and I need help. We saw that you're very knowledgeable about fish care and we're having a bit of an issue. We are the proud moms to two male betas (a blue one named Lance and a red one named Kieth, we're big Voltron nerds lmao lol) anywho we kept them in a large vase with plants and until a week ago they were getting along great. We would swimming around and played tag soo cute. The other day though we saw that Kieth was floating at the top of the water, he was dead. PT 1
PT 2. we’re super sad and worried that Lance is also sick. We care so much for him (and his departed boyfriend) so we’d appreciate any help you could give us. Have a great day. I couldn’t attach a photo but Kieth was floating at the top with a yellow ribbon like protrusion and milky scales. Lance has a red growth from his gills and milky scales and his tail has been ripped up. I hope this helps. Thank you again
Hi there, I’m so sorry for your loss <3 it sounds like you care a lot for your fish. Unfortunately I’m also dealing with a pretty heavy loss right now and I’m not sure I’m in the best place to put together an answer right now but I’m going to bounce you off to some great betta owners who will help you get your remaining little man taken care of.
@hella-free-space @pet-of-subs @iantojonesthebetta Can one of you or your followers offer these worried moms some advice? I think the issue is pretty clear but I’m a little too frazzled right now to help properly.
Hi, there! :)
First off, unfortunately, you need to do a lot more research into the care of betta fish for the future. Keeping two male bettas together in a vase is, sadly and blatantly, animal cruelty (and illegal in some countries). They’re fighting fish – they weren’t playing tag, but posturing and fighting, which helped contribute to injury and death.

So the first thing you need to do for your injured boy is put together an adequate setup to reduce stress and help him flourish (if he survives his initial trauma). Clean water, an extra dose of something like API Stress Coat or Seachem Prime, can help potentially help prevent infections by replenishing the slime coat and tending to injuries.
There’s a lot that need to be done here, but a good place to start is to go through and consider these resources and more. By better preparing and educating yourselves, you can potentially help your boy get back on track.
As to your above tags my roomie and I are trying our BEST, we don’t have a lot of funds but we are doing the best we can. We got two male Bettas because they’re prettier and we wanted one for each of us!!!!!!!! It’s sad Kieth died but we were doing what we thought was ok and we don’t appreciate your negative views and comments about us. I went here for help and you have not been helpful at all we came here for support and we’ve just been met with disrespect. Disappointing. We don’t know about you but not everyone can afford an expensive setup. This is directed at @snowflakeeel for your rude comment about our ignorance.
i’m honestly confused. what tag are you guys mad about? the being uninformed one? i mean…. sorry but it’s true. Most of us are in the beginning my first betta lived in a vase for a while. what i meant was it’s sad that no one told you guys any better. also the “but at least they’re asking questions” was supposed to be positive ??
if yall are mad about the animal cruelty tag…. well… sorry but even unintentional animal cruelty is still animal cruelty and i have followers who don’t want to see that so i tag it.

i wanted the links that iantojonesthebetta put on the post
@anihilisticbunny FIRST you need to grow the fuck up, these people have been very polite in telling you what you did to those fish was wrong and how to better care for your remaining Betta.
SECOND If all you want is sympathy and someone to tell you it’s going to be okay; get off the internet. We’re not here to coddle you.
THIRD again grow up and take direct responsibility for the death of your fish which you kept in an improper enclosure with another aggressive fish!
#you want disrespectful I’ll give you disrespectful #you gonna learn today #dumbass
First of all you have no right to insult us. And as for saying we'll learn today we have but certainly not from you as you seem only capable of insult and unkindness. You think it's ok to insult us because we didn't know as much as we should have about Betta fish. You're here putting the well-being of an internet fish over that of people and yet you seem to think you're teaching us something and changing our behavior. Clearly no one is coddling us and that is totally fair, what isn't fair is being nasty to other people over a fish. We've taken responsibility and learned from our mistakes (we're setting up a 5.5 gallon aquarium tonight and we'll move our Betta there) now it seems like it's your turn to do the same.
