2026 intro!

Hello, my name is Henry (he/him). I’m a hobbyist philosopher, perpetual skeptic, home cook, occasional writer, and digital artist. I read tarot and spend my free time consuming any and all things esoteric. I’m particularly interested in the evolution of religion, occult practices, and the intersections of the two with politics and philosophy. I live with OCD and dissociative PTSD and these conditions often inform and fuel my studies. I’m hoping to start attending university again soon.

I’m also really into The Raven Cycle and The Secret History. I’m currently watching Supernatural and feel like I might have missed the bandwagon. As for music, Sufjan Stevens is my favorite, the best of his albums (in my opinion) being the Age of Adz (2010). However, I listen to all of his discography pretty unsystematically, and other things go in and out of rotation depending on vibes. I am the final boss of “listens to everything” so please feel free to share any tunes you might be listening to!

I have a couple of projects I’m poking around at. I’ll make a proper tag for each of them eventually, but for now you can find my OCs and the rest of my art here.

This is wild. I don’t know what would provoke someone to spread stuff about a random internet stranger that is objectively not true, but I would love to talk to this person about it.

I’ve had a very complicated relationship with my art for several years now. It’s been a long road to being okay with sharing my art for several reasons that I shouldn’t have to get into. This is a shame.

Anyway, here are some progress shots for every piece they ran through the AI detector.

Putting your roughs next to the finished pieces makes it pretty obvious that you're using AI to retouch your drawings.

The hair changes to the generic AI digital art style in all pieces, most noticeably in the first piece where you can see it struggles with the curls behind the ear in a way that doesn't make sense for that haircut, the bangs also change texture, (2) the statue in the background gaining a spotlight and a huge ear out of nowhere??

In the second piece you can see where it messed up and (1) turned the glare on the glasses into tears, (2) confuses the blood and shadows on the sleeve making nonsensical veiny purple markings, (3) blood on the leaves is completely gone (may have been stylistic choice, but suspicious considering it was present even in earliest sketch).

In the third piece (1) the deer shadow is gone (again may just have been a stylistic choice tbf), (2) the rendering of the blood changes drastically, and the AI gets confused and interprets the shadows in the hair as blood, (3) the hair actually melts into the skin above her nose and near the eyebrow in an unnatural way that is particular to AI generated images.

Alright, since we’re doing this again.

Do you understand what progress sketches look like? Do you understand that everybody’s sketches look different? Do you understand that things can change from point A to point B? Do you understand that I can change things from the sketch to the final render? Do you understand that a sketch is often not 1:1 to the final drawing? Do you understand that sometimes human error can make things look imperfect? I see a lot of error in each of these pieces as they’re old as hell now. In fact, a lot of the things you pointed out are stylistic choices I no longer choose to incorporate BECAUSE they looked “too AI” and there are a lot of things I have learned from in the past year.

But please, humor me. What could I possibly do to prove these are not AI generated other than a speedpaint? I’m asking this seriously because y’all love to say those are faked too nowadays. Sure, retroactively, I would’ve saved every speedpaint if I knew that every now and then, some rando on the internet was gonna crawl up from a hell pit and accuse me of using AI. I don’t use AI, I don’t condone the use of AI, and I will never use AI.

So to break it down for you, too:

1. My perspective skills were and are still kind of a mess. If I could go back and change the way I rendered the hair, I would because I don’t like it either! The curl behind the ear? Hate it now. But the bust details/spotlight were both added once I’d blocked out the rest of the colors.

2. The ‘glare’ was always meant to be tears. Again, I would render this differently now. I was learning what gradient maps did with this piece, and again, hate it now because it desaturated the blood. But what do you know, I know how to use gradient maps now. And I also removed the blood on the leaves because I didn’t want it there. Simple.

3. My skill level was not up to par for this piece. Again, bad use of gradient maps and adjusting colors via the color balancing tool on Procreate made the values weird and blend strangely in some places. I had a moment of self awareness and realized I didn’t know enough about lighting and the way that light realistically reacts to anything to actually make this piece work at all. This is one of my least favorite pieces in hindsight, I was still bumbling through learning how to paint realistic skin tones and hair and abusing color-adjusting burn and divide layers because I didn’t know what I was doing.

And another thing I would like y’all to answer: what do you gain from accusing people of using AI? Do you feel morally superior? Do you feel special? Do you want a pat on the back? Do you want a couple of notes? It’s exhausting to keep having to defend myself. If I did use AI, I wouldn’t be here on tumblr dot com where a lot of you weirdos make a sport out of fabricating drama and I would post my AI-generated garbage on deviantArt instead. But no, hate to tell you, this is organic, handmade garbage.

As an artist who has become increasingly wary of sharing their art on the internet because of AI scraping, and now apparently has to be worried about idiots misdiagnosing art as AI (and then deleting any evidence of doing so when they realize they were wrong, even when the damage to the artist's reputation is already done)... what the fuck is y'all's damage? The only thing you're doing is tarnishing an actual artist's well-earned following and then covering your ass on the way out when you realize you were full of shit. Not even an apology? Y'all should be embarrassed.

And they won’t apologize. Neither the person the original anon was talking about nor the last person who listed out their reasons have offered me an apology. Neither have been brave enough to come to my DMs and talk like adults, which I know at least one of them are! Both dirty-deleted whenever I proved them wrong enough for them to look ridiculous, which is a phenomenal display of cowardice. If you’re gonna take a stand, make it all ten toes. And you know, the first person had anons come to my inbox and insult me. I had no idea why.

I’m tough, I could take it in DMs if either of them were to act like adults and talk to me. I tagged them both, they know I saw and responded. And the thing is like, genuinely, I think that people forget that there are actual living breathing humans on the other side of a tumblr account. I just get angry but it did hurt at first. It felt awful, like everything I did was for nothing, and with people insulting me anonymously in my inbox really fucking sucked! I have thick enough skin to cope, but this could easily destroy someone else. I don’t do art for a living so I can’t imagine what something like this would do to someone whose work kept them fed and a roof over their head.

AI was trained on real artists first. Real artists who have dedicated their entire lives to creating things with their hands. Sure, you might point out AI correctly every now and then, but ask yourself if this sort of thing would actually deter someone who decided to use AI in the first place, and then ask yourself what’s at stake if you’re wrong. Do you care? Do you give a shit enough to wonder what kind of life or reputation you might ruin? I do this for a hobby. If I were to disappear from this site it would make no difference to my wellbeing. I like sharing stuff because finding people that like the same media I do is fun!! and I have some really cool people I follow. But others might have their entire livelihood at stake.

I think the appeal of Supernatural wanes post-s8, or whenever they started adding background music?? One of the reasons I loved the first half was because of the shitty production quality. It was easy to suspend disbelief because it was still Bad, but the sort of Good-Bad that allows you to put aside its flaws for the sake of a good time. With the stakes being stupid high and the production value going up it loses the spirit I fear

Adding to this, I think that Supernatural is at its best when it’s campy with real, significant moments sandwiched between the absurdity. Like I think of season 8 finale Sam’s monologue. The buildup to it was gradual, but it meant something because through the moments of levity and drama you knew was going to blow over somehow, Sam’s insecurity was wrapped up in a bow and presented with a sense of finality. It was the only moment I’ve actually cried throughout the entire series. It felt raw and real, it felt more consequential than anything that came after.

Later seasons suffer also from stakes being cartoonishly high. Nothing really feels like it means anything, there are so many of those Big Moments that they all blur together. It’s always been predictable, but there’s no gravity to any decision that would’ve been apocalyptically bad in prior seasons.

If anything past season 11 has no haters I am cold, dead, and in the ground. I will write something more in depth eventually probably maybe

Just wanted to say that I love your art and love seeing it on my dash! ❤️ Big fan of those The Secret History pieces too. I totally get being harsh on your own work in retrospect, but I still think they're great!
