ANIMETALE
Here it is everyone! At long last, after almost a whole year of development, me and @granddustwizard present to you guys: ANIMETALE. We had alot of fun brainstorming and concdeptualizing this AU and we really hope you guys like enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.
Mettaton
Your star. Has arrived. Ordinarily designed to emulate the style, Animetale Mettaton is the most bishonen bishonen that ever did bishonen. In addition to being a zany comedic show host, Mettaton inherently embodies the traits of shojo and josei anime and manga, with numerous elements of robot and mecha anime thrown into the mix. He also represents the Idol Singer and, obviously, Bishonen tropes of anime. So with all of this combined, it's obvious why Mettaton is the most stylistic, theatrical, and arguably exciting denizen of the Underground. He is highly adaptable, however, and most of his shows reflect the various genres of anime, from shonen to sentai, from comedy to tragedy, and everything in between... and of course, not only does he play each role flawlessly, he is always either the host or the main protagonist. As a result, his fanbase consists of virtually all monsterkind...Even if fans of different shows often clash with each other over which is better. On his own, Mettaton is just as flashy and flamboyant as he is on screen. What’d you expect? A true star cannot rest even for a moment. After all, you never know who’s watching~
--Normal Form
·Has more angles and edges, giving it a distinctly sharper look while still looking box-like.
·Rather than being impervious to damage due to simply having an invincible body, in Animetale Mettaton utilizes an advanced force field projector system to block any and all attacks coming his way, which he calls his M.T.T. Field (totally not the A.T. field from Evangelion).
--EX Form
·Hair is even longer and more gorgeous. Also has a microphone earpiece attached to his left side.
·Body is built to better resemble musculature and clothing rather than metal plates. (Still made of metal though.)
·Arms in this form are stiff and jointed rather than flexible and tube-like.
·M.T.T. Field is reduced in size to an M.T.T. Shield, now projected from a mechanism built into his left arm, further reflecting the decrease in defensive practicality in favor of style.
·Has a penchant for shouting things along the line of “Exciting Title! Two-Part Episode Name!!” out loud, both on and off camera.
·Jojo poses. In fact, just Jojo in general.
Alphys
As is par for the course, Alphys is this world's chief resident Otaku. Which, considering the setting, is particularly notable, impressive, and odd all at once. Her in-universe enthusiasm for anime and nature as a shut-in continue to make her something of an outcast. Well, that and the fact that she's socially awkward around others anyways... for more reasons than one. Being a particular nut for Romance and Magical Girl genres, it should come as no surprise that she embraces the aspects of them quite well; although timid, nervous, and more than a bit self-deprecating on the outside, she is nonetheless intensely passionate about her interests, dedicated, and quite, quite emotional. Overly so. So much so in fact that she is very prone to breaking down over even slight things, or freaking out, or getting extremely excited, or virtually any extreme in-between. One of the most stand-out things about her, though, is her 'knack' for exposition. By which we mean she takes almost any opportunity she can get to explain what's going on to others, in painful detail. Try not to let her get into a tangent; you'll be stuck listening to her for quite a while.
·Smoother and rounder to facilitate the cuteness factor. Also has much better posture... at least when she's around others.
·Wears a cute pink hair...err...fringe ribbon? Horn ribbon? Screw it, she wears a ribbon.
·Also wears a modest turtleneck beneath the lab coat. Because in anime, looking cute is just as vital as looking professional, if not more so.
·For a short pudgy lizard shut-in weeaboo scientist, she is weirdly on top of her appearance game. Absolutely kills it in a dress.
·Glasses have a tendency to go into Scary Shiny mode whenever she gets particularly excited about something...Or when she's depressed. Even when there's no real light source present.
·Has a particular habit of needlessly overexplaining things for other people. Can get pretty annoying at times.
·Still "knows" anime is fake. Hah.
Undyne
Undyne was already the definition of a tomboy, anime protagonist wannabe. So if you can imagine that, amped up to eleven...hundred, then you've got Undyne here. In a world where everything is as anime, Undyne stands out for being even more anime than the rest. Everything she says, everything she does, is filled with such over the top action and vigor that you can just FEEL the pure concentrated shonen energy rolling off of her in intense waves. She takes the utmost pride in her strength (which is worthy of the most iconic of ridiculously overpowered anime heroes), but even more so in the strength of her friends and the strength of the monster race as a whole, and her sense of justice, as well as her devotion to it, is unmatched throughout the Underground. Above all is her refusal to surrender, no matter the odds or the opposition. Undyne is the ultimate living embodiment of almost every hot-blooded shonen protagonist trope you can think of; just as much as she tries to emulate them, she is one by pure nature.
·Combines the Tomboyish Ponytail with Tomboyish Sidetails, emphasizing the tomboyish personality without diminishing femininity. Plus, extra hair is always a plus in anime.
·No full-body plate armor; instead wears heavy armor in key locations and a skintight suit underneath. Much more visually appealing... and still protective to boot! Mostly. Rules of anime armor apply.
·Carries unreasonably huge and 'impractical' weapons into battle, and likes to display her strength by performing feats such as cutting massive boulders in half with a single swing. Why? Because she can. (Still mostly uses her magic spears for fighting, though.)
·Magic spears have a more stylized design, and have a slight lightning aesthetic to them.
·Eats. A LOT. And somehow maintains her athletic figure.
·Still a huge anime enthusiast, in-universe. Ironic, really. (Secretly likes Magical Girl stuff. Alphys' fault. Tell anyone and she'll turn you into paste.)
·Might actually be the monster version of Erza
Papyrus THE GREAT
Friendly! Compassionate! Confident! Heroic! And maybe a bit egotistical! These are the words that describe the one, the only, Papyrus THE GREAT! Future Royal Guard, and ultimate warrior, a hero to children and adults alike! Autograph requests welcome! Papyrus in Animetale is, if you can imagine it, even more amusing and over-the-top than his Undertale persona. The reason being that Papyrus reflects the elements of Sentai-style superhero anime...except for the fact that he is completely by himself. No partners to speak of. Unless you consider Sans, but of course he doesn't count. But that is in fact part of his desire to join the Royal Guard, to have peers with which to perform his inspiring, morale-boosting acts. Papyrus has a tendency to perform dynamic poses along with heroic mini-speeches whenever he is introducing himself, and to a lesser extent whenever he is simply greeting someone. He even manages to get colorful, dramatic, and often inexplicable explosions in his background (which he probably rigs up himself well in advance). He believes in chivalry and fair play, as well as showing kindness to any and all he meets...truly traits of an aspiring hero. Sure, he's naive and not the best at his job, but he's just so darn endearing and awesome, it's hard to get mad at him for it.
·Hella tall, just like always. Not quite as lanky looking though, due in part to appearing slightly more muscular... somehow.
·Rather than simple empty sockets, features white rings to mark his eyes (just like his brother also does). Still gets comical pop-out eyes when angry or embarrassed though.
·His scarf is now super long, fashionably tattered, and often trails behind him in the wind... even when there is no wind to speak of.
·Belts. Too many belts. Straps too. Papyrus really likes belts and straps. *cough*
·Often uses a long bone staff when posing... oh, and also when fighting. Of course.
·Still claims to hate puns. Especially the weird anime-based ones, which he apparently doesn't get.
·Practices poses with Undyne. Oh, and speeches.
Sans the Skeleton
In a world where everything is anime, what do you do with a character who treats everything with a shrug and a smile and can't really be bothered to put effort into anything? The answer should be fairly simple. The best way to describe Sans in Animetale is to liken him to the standard, comedic slice-of-life style. As opposed to most other folks around him, he doesn't behave in very dynamic fashion, remaining very mellow by comparison. Instead, he comes off as even cooler and more relaxed than what you might be used to. What sets him apart further is that, next to the often-needlessly-dramatic behavior and actions of those around him, he is extremely direct and practical about most everything he does (almost aggravating so at times). To be honest, he doesn't have the energy to be as lively with his lifestyle as others, but even still, it is odd, the way he sometimes seems to knowingly subvert his own surroundings. Whatever seeming medium awareness he might have, though, is always concealed beneath his easy grin and disarming love for terrible puns.
·Somewhat less stocky in this incarnation. Still pretty dang short though. And still eats a lot. (i guess you could say it all... goes right through him.)
·Still has empty eye sockets (he is a skeleton after all), but as opposed to the standard glowing dots marking his eyes, here they are glowing white rings with black centers, making them closer reminiscent to regular eyes.
·Often has lazy "half-lidded" eyes, to visually mark his laid-back attitude. In any case, they only fully widen when he's being very serious.
·His trademark perpetual grin is more of a casual/easygoing smirk here. Most of the time, at least. (Still never opens his jaw when talking though.)
·A thick, shaggy fur-collared hood to his sweater. Because when ya can't have anime hair, ya make up for it where it counts.
·Zippers. A completely unnecessary amount of zippers. Everywhere. (Handy for storing ketchup.)
·His usual puns now include ones based on anime, for no apparent reason. Example.
·(Tends to go into his chibi form on a much more regular basis than other characters, interestingly enough.)
Asgore
As king of the monsters, and being in an anime-based world, it stands to reason that Asgore be as regal, imposing, and luxurious-looking as possible... while still maintaining his Good King look. This version of Asgore has a notably more distinct flare for the dramatic (and a penchant for long-winded speeches and monologues), causing him to come off as extremely friendly and passionate to the populace, if somewhat exasperating as well. Close friends and family see him as even more of a soft-hearted and jolly giant, and monsterkind as a whole sees him as an incredible rallying presence. However, Asgore’s persona represents both sides of drama, and that of course includes tragedy. The inner war he wages with himself every day is quite taxing on him, but all the same, he pushes forward. For Asgore's sheer commitment to his kin is unmatched throughout the Underground, matched only by his power, something spoken of in legends. As ruler, he will do what he feels he must for the sake of his people, and nothing, absolutely nothing, can shake him from that resolve.
·Hair, beard, and eyebrows are all far more luxuriant.
·Still tall, large, and imposing. Albeit most of that size is now visibly attributed to musculature rather than weight. Anime armor is very slimming, after all.
·Said armor and regalia, crown included, is very stylized here. Cape also has a tendency to flare out very dramatically.
·Purple eyes, a color befitting royalty. However, they glow fierce red when he's using magic...
·His trident is even more extravagant-looking, and may-or-may-not be on fire.
·Despite having a bigger penchant for the dramatic, still can't name things to save his life.
Toriel
Toriel is designed to maintain that warm, motherly feeling she normally exudes, while now also having the appearance of a hidden anime action girl (because you're never too old to be an anime action girl). Personality-wise, she reflects the Japanese concept of the 'nadeshiko'...albeit without the Japanese association, in this case. That is to say, she is is wise, humble, gentle, mature, and loyal, while at the same time carrying an iron will and steely resolve. Thus, she is by no means a doormat. She may not enjoy conflict or fighting, but when push comes to shove she will stand up for what she believes is right, and won't allow those she cares about to come to harm, nor will she allow anyone to stand in her way. When this happens, steer clear, for Hell knows no wrath like a mother scorned.
·Her robes give off more of a mage/priest vibe.
·Spiky hair-fur fringe in the front, and flared out in the back, plus a visible tail. You can tell where Asriel got most of his looks from.
·Cute Little Fangs, also like her son. Although, if sufficiently angered, they can in fact become the scary kind.
·Red eyes, capable of being both comforting and terrifying. Usually comforting though. They magically glow bright purple when she's using...well, magic.
·The magical fire she conjures is pink and violet.
·A wildflower at heart. In fact, it's practically a title/nickname given to her by monsters who remember her, including Asgore.
Asriel / Flowey
Asriel. Kawaii. Plain and simple. Animetale Asriel is cuteness incarnate. And this is what he was most famous for...back when he was alive, anyways. Precious, lovable, and innocent Prince Asriel. I mean, just look at that face. What kind of soulless abomination couldn't love a face like that?
Well, there is one fellow who comes to mind. Or rather, flower. Though in Flowey's defense, he doesn't really love anything anymore, especially not himself. Flowey in Animetale is designed to take the range of expressiveness he is known for, and blend it with that distinctive anime style. So when he's acting cute, he's REALLY cute. And when he's sadistic... well. Who needs sleep anyways, right? Plus, being the meta creature he is, Flowey has developed a certain understanding of the various 'tropes' that make up the world and it's numerous inhabitants. And, of course, he exploits this for his own gain, all while mockingly deconstructing the world around him.
--Asriel
·Look at Asriel omg why is he so kawaii aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
·Spiky hair-fur fringe and flooffy tail. Because anime+adorableness.
·Has Cute Little Fangs. Which is more of a family trait, really.
·Protect the smol moe goat child.
--Flowey
·Flowey's leaves are more realistic, and are designed to be reminiscent of actual buttercup flower leaves. Yes, they are actually that spiky.
·Still more than capable of being cute. Uses this to his advantage.
·Said leaves also act as hands and help him express himself even further. He keeps them hidden until he needs them, or until he drops his cute facade.
·Sharp teeth. And when he shows his psycho smile, they're on full display.
Chara
Chara's design is meant to invoke those characters who are cunning and intelligent far beyond their years... with some malicious intent thrown in. Like Frisk, they are curious, but their outgoingness is less about wanting to be involved, and more about...wanting to see what might happen. They are almost always seen smiling in a strangely serene way, like they are always perfectly at ease. They also have an almost disturbing knack for reading others, and always know just the right way to combat any situation.
·Hairstyle is plain-ish and flat, yet still very anime. Commonly seen on rivals, main characters and antagonists alike.
·Also has an ahoge. In the same place as a certain other human child, coincidentally enough...
·And also has a sweater just slightly too big for them. Huh.
·Large vibrant red eyes stare right into your Soul.
·Constantly smiling. See Serene Dissonance for when calm. See Psychotic Smirk and/or Slasher Smile for when not.
·Very protective. Or possessive. One of those two.
·Capable of extremely disturbing actions if sufficiently provoked...or if curious enough. (Good thing monsters don't bleed...)
Frisk
Generic Anime Protagonist Child. Their appearance is designed to call to mind the stock shonen protag, but their personality is vague. They are curious, and quite willing to try out new things, often even when common sense should dictate otherwise, and manage to stay straight- and plain-faced even in the most outlandish of situations. Plus, it seems no matter what or who they're faced with, they're always able to figure out what others are into and appeal to their behavior and preferences. What does stand out about them the most, though, is their sheer will to overcome any and all obstacles, no matter how absurd the task may be.
·See "Stock Shonen Hero", but more specifically, "All-Loving Hero".
·Stereotypical absurd and spiky shonen protagonist hair. As far as anime hair goes, still a rather basic and neutral design.
·The 'ahoge', also known as the "idiot hair" or "stray antenna hair". Another anime classic, and Frisk has one near the upper back of their head...or wherever it needs to be to be visible by the audience.
·Almost perpetually has the most plain and basic expression anyone has ever seen. Ever. Gives Saitama a run for his money.
·Instead manages to emote via eyebrows.
·Also, wearing very thick sweater. Almost too big for them. Becomes especially noticeable when in motion.
