amazing things are happening in tomodachi life
u know what i fucking love. is that it's so clear that many of us have important full time jobs. yet you can see us here on tumblr throughout the work day posting about the most unhinged shit possible. like we're really out here going to a meeting then coming back to tumblr like "shane drippy big dick bouncing on that thang" before running back to another meeting like Hi Linda yes I talked to the team earlier and we're ready to send the documents over. How was your weekend
iron lung is all about the realizations. the dawning realization that if the camera uses x-rays, then those weren't just skeletons outside the sub. the dawning realization that eden, with its idealic name and floral imagery, is a suicide cult bent on interring humanity to its grave. the dawning realization that simon was never going to be free, because he was never going to make it out alive
one thing i really liked about iron lung immediately was the costuming. like all of simon’s clothes looked like scraps of fabric that had been patched together over and over again to the absolute limit of the fabric, his shirt looked like they didnt have enough contiguous fabric to cut the right shape for the pattern so they used a couple different pieces. idk its just a really nice attention to detail i havent heard anyone else mention
Iron lung spoilers(?)
100% the most realistic part of the movie is just how many times he says fuck. Because let’s be real, any remotely sane person forced into that bullshit situation would be cursing just as much, if not more. Fuck your alien nonsense indeed.
i've been working on something a little more serious in terms of iron lung fanart but took a small detour to doodle this instead
The part in Iron Lung where Simon says "I didn't tell you my name" and the Speaker responds back "yes you did" is something I didn't catch at first but gives me chills thinking about it now
This is the reveal that the voice talking to him over the speaker does not in fact belong to another scared and lonely survivor at the bottom of the blood ocean (or at least, not anymore) but actually the beast in the depths. The same beast that he spotted in the distance and jokingly introduced himself to earlier in the movie, which has apparently been stalking him the entire time
That line puts this entire portion of the movie in a new perspective. But what I can't figure out is, what was with the questions about Filament Station shortly before it?
When Simon mentions the incident at Filament Station the Speaker becomes very upset and demands to know what happened there. Simon is initially confused about how the Speaker doesn't know about it and he doesn't want to talk about it, but the intense insistence from the Speaker forces him to explain
Before the reveal I thought that it must be because Filament Station held personal importance to the trapped woman Simon was speaking to and this scene was meant to show how long she had been disconnected from the outside world. But now, knowing that he was actually speaking to this cosmic monster...
Why didn't it know this? And why was it so insistent on finding out? Why did it sound angry even?
Why did this eldritch horror at the bottom of a blood ocean care so much about Filament Station?
Tfw you witness cosmic horrors beyond your comprehension
Simon is way more kind and forgiving than I would have been in his position. As soon as I found out I was in control of a radiation bazooka with the people that trapped me in a metal tin can as my only protection against The Horrors ™ in range i would start button mashing. Fuck you i'm not going back into the fuckass blood ocean, we're all dying of radiation poisoning
"An ignorant god sees a sliver of our universe through a pinhole and thinks it understands all that is and all that will be."
There's something about the symbolism of the pendant and the window in Iron Lung that won't leave me alone.
There is no practical reason for a window to be part of this submarine. Even Ava points out that you cannot see through the blood without an X-ray camera. The window exists so the others can look in at the convicts - the only things that give them hope for the future.
The seed pendant seems to fill a similar role. It doesn't serve any real purpose, but Simon clings to it like a lifeline. It's a symbol of hope and life, despite the overwhelming odds against it.
Simon is trapped in the Iron Lung, just like the seed has been sealed behind glass. Neither of them can live in that environment, but they were placed inside anyway in the hopes that they will create a brighter future.
And this may tie in with the line, "An ignorant god sees a sliver of our universe through a pinhole and thinks it understands all that is and all that will be."
But these thin panes of glass cannot last when they try to hold something that has a greater purpose.
A seed can never sprout, and a convict can never touch the outside world until they break the prisons created by their ignorant gods.
And what happens when a symbol becomes a living, breathing, fighting thing? The ocean doesn't break in - Simon's will breaks out.
You guys ever think about the glass pendant of the leaf Simon wraps around his left wrist, as an emotional support pendant and a symbol of Eden (the fellow Eden "brother" who left it in the ship, a sprouting seed leaf representative of the Tree, etc.) despite the clear distaste he has for what Eden as a collective has done re: Filament Station/his tattoo/etc.
You ever think about when he transitions into the fever dream of waking up in the blood ocean, his left wrist keeps him chained to something deep within the ocean even when he wants to escape.
A shackle you find comfort in. Simon and the familiarity of the cult that raised him even when they betrayed him. Eden and the belief of the Tree even as it demands atrocities against mankind. Consolidation and the ocean they can't turn away from despite the people they keep losing to it.
Toward the middle of the movie this pendant cracks. Later in the climax, Simon pulls himself free from a crucifixion, and notably it's his left arm that doesn't follow him. You have to break free from the delusional hope for a perfect outcome, and it will hurt and it will be like pulling off a limb and it will feel like losing your home both past and future. But now you are free. You can look at the present.
DO NOT TAP THE GLASS

Crack theory: There's nothing supernatural going on in Iron Lung. Simon is just experiencing the side effects of chugging almost pure ethanol like a fucking moron.
