I Face Barriers Everyday

Okay so for the past 2 years of being at Walmart  I’ve dealt with all sorts of crap based on my deafness.  I have become sick and tired of of having to tell people I cannot do the phones. Okay I’ll admit I can answer phone calls and all but its the damn walkies talkies I can never understand! Now every time I ask to not do the phones they say “oh that is everyone's excuse, now I don’t want to hear it from you either. ”  What the hell do you expect me to say???? I’ve talked to all my managers and they all said the same thing “OK we will make sure you don’t do the phones ever.”  Why the heck am I still on the phones if you all know?????? I have made some remarks about it but they still see it as an excuse because I can talk but I’m hard of hearing not deaf in their opinion.. What am i to do if my batteries die? I can’t leave the area with customers? hmmm I’m not that overall happy so I need to come up with a choice of to do.

WHO I AM

My name is Heather. I’ve lived here in Texas most of my life. I lost my hearing at the age of 7. There has been no clues that lead to what happened.. I remember being in Corpus Christi with the family while my mom was in the hospital… received a phone call and ended up hanging up on my mom all because I couldn’t hear… days went by and my mom finally came to pick us up… I had no idea that I was “deaf” I just thought everyone was being silent.. grandparents suggested taking me the the audiologist and turned out I was profoundly deaf… I have not learned to accept what I have to deal with for the rest of my life. I received a surgery for the Cochlear Implant when I was 8 years old. I’ve learned how to hear sounds, words and being able to communicate with others. Understand I am now considered hard of hearing. I can only catch 5-75% of what u say depending where we are talking and how your voice sounds. I may ask you to repeat but usually not too many times (depending on tone of voice and/accent of voice). Everyday I deal with discrimination and it has always reminded me of how much I hate being deaf… God made me who I am today, but takes forever to accept the fact that I have to deal with arguments and people yelling at me because I can’t do anything about how I can hear.. People expect me to change how I hear things.. but only I am responsible for what I can and can’t hear.
