Love how Dolores calling Mariano the man of her dreams was initially framed as a āoh because heās prettyā crush and when the confession time comes itās really because she has HEARD him for so long and she knows little things about how kind and loving and sensitive he is and THAT is what she loves. Mariano is a character that comes off as cheesy and plain at first but really heās just earnest and āfilled with so much loveā and Dolores KNOWS it.
If the engagement really happened and Mirabel didn't interfere, Mariano and Isabela would truly be a second version of Pedro and Alma: but loveless, because Isabela didn't love Mariano in that way. (Taken from Art of Encanto)

Saw something about apple being a sacrificial lamb and had to paint this :) very proud of it
got a stupid doodle comic idea a few days ago so I drew itš
I love corny mariano who makes unhinged jokes! Dolores laughed her ass off for at least 10 minutes tears in her eyes š
As much as I love the potential of Maui and Luisa hooking up together to have Luis as their kid, I do admit that ultimately, it would make 10 times more sense if Luis was Dolores and Mariano's kid than directly Luisa's.
Luis is both a hunk and a love interest character, which matches, considering Mariano is also a hunk and a love interest character who happens to be a romantic, according to Dolores.
In Latine families, it makes perfect sense to name kids after relatives like grandparents, uncles and aunts, parents, cousins, siblings, etc. It's not exactly that uncommon, so Luis being named after Luisa would track, as Luisa would be seen as a great role model. Furthermore, expecting him to be even more like Luisa once he has a gift that is just like hers (and Luisa's lessons kind of no longer applying since she's not exactly the one to continue the cycle and it could fly over Dolores and Mariano's heads as they weren't really there for Luisa's character development even if Dolores most likely heard them).
Usage of yellow makes sense on Pepa's side of family, even though I'm pretty sure Mariano and Dolores's family would utilise more shades of red but I digress.
Luis could still be addressed as Luisa's nephew first and foremost to uphold the tradition of Descendants of giving basic names to Descendants in question.

Juan and Javier GuzmƔn Madrigal Headcanons;
A lot of people seem to write Mariano as fairly simple minded with average poetry.
But I personally think it'd be funny as hell if he knew all kinds of random rare words and their meanings because of something along the lines of
"I couldn't think of something that rhymes with lemon so I went to the bookstore and got the thickest dictionary I could find."

When Isabela and Marino "were dating" Mariano is a real crumbs seeker.

Thanks for saying that, I totally agree.

⨠So this is love? āØ
Mariano Guzman has always been a romantic at heart. He loved, well- love. The idea of falling hopelessly and truly in love with someone, and spending the rest of their loves together⦠that was it for him. Ever since he was a boy, he put pen to paper and wrote poetry every day about this magical feeling.
He didnt share that poetry often, especially not till he was courting a certain young woman. He would just read his poetry outloud into the wind, or the night sky. He never knew he had an audience⦠but thatās for later.
The point is, the idea of love is what drove Mariano through life, well that and making his grandmother happy. So when hints were dropped, and discussions were had, he suddenly found himself frequently in the presence of one Isabella Madrigal.
He felt like the luckiest guy in the world. It wasnāt about the prestige of the family Madrigal, but Isabella was beautiful and kind. And he thought he loved her. And he thought she loved him.
They began courting. Shared conversations, chaperoned dates, family meet ups, so on.
Looking back though, he can see it. The distance in her eyes, how stilted the conversations were. How she politely nodded and accepted his poetry but seemed disinterested, uncomfortable even. He does think they were friends, but in hindsight, knowing what he does now, its all very different.
He remembers the way Isabella acted the perfect part, while subtely making sure Alma and his grandmother were pleased. How Alma seemed to be driving all the decisions, more than Isabellaās parents even, and more than Isabella herself.
And then the engagement dinner. And the explosion of plant life all through the valley, never seen before. Despite the pain of a doubly broken nose, he remembers wondering why Alma was so upset. The plants were different but still lovely, and in the distance it looked like his betrothed and her younger sister had somehow found each other again. Wasnāt that its own miracle? He always liked Mirabel. Who cares if she didnāt have the magic? She was kind, energetic, funny, great with kids, and always willing to help.
He also thought that Isabella had never seemed that happy and free as she did in that moment. And he was all the way across town. But he could hear that carefree laughter.
Heād never heard that from her before, and until that moment he never realized how strange that fact was.
Something had clearly been bothering Isabella. He knew it from the dinner, and he was determined to help her through it if she let him. Whether it was wedding jitters, or something more.
Then the house fell, and everything changed again.
Isabella came to him, and explained everything. Although they agreed to remain friends, and he held her no ill will, only wanting her to be happy- he did feel a little crushed. He was also a little shaken that she wouldāve gone through with the marriage, despite not really loving him. Thatās the part that didnāt make sense to him, how could you commit to that if you at least didnāt think it was real love? After all, heād been thinking of love and marriage his whole life.
He thought he loved Isabella. He thought he loved her in the really big way the stories tell, and the songs say.
Turns out, he was in love with the idea of love- not actually in love.
How does he realizes this, is slowly.
It starts with a meddling younger sister, opening his eyes to someone he always liked but unfortunately overlooked.
It was slow, just like the girl wanted, and despite the jokes he made⦠turns out thatās what he wanted as well.
After many dates, and talks, and walks, and late night poetry performances to the audience he now knows heās always had- it happens.
It happens without him realizing it, something real.
He is sitting on a bench on the edge of town, Doloresā head in his lap. Sun drifting through the leaves, a soft breeze carrying laughter of children from the town square.
He meticulously is working on a wood carving, a new hobby heās picked up. Heās learned how Dolores finds some sounds soothing in the cacophony of life she is exposed to daily. That focusing on certain sounds help, such as the heartbeats of her familia and those she loves (When he learns how long ago his heartbeat was included in this list, heās overcome with emotion and over the moon. He may have written some poetry about that). He also learned she likes the sounds of windchimes, pocket change, falling sand, and- the sound of carving wood. So he started learning.
He stops for a moment, and looks at Dolores, and all he can think is-
He loves her. And this feeling isnāt new, heās felt this for a while now. Its just that in this moment, it hits him- and nothing in this world has ever made more sense than this simple fact.
Mariano Guzman loves Dolores Madrigal.
āSo this is it. This is love.ā
He can finally say, that it is exactly what the stories and songs say. That its everything he ever wanted.
This is when he realizes, heās never been in love before. Just the idea. He thinks back to something Isabella said in their talk āI want something true, and who cares if its perfect? It would be perfect for me. I just want my life to be mine, to feel realā
He gets it know. He wants something true too. And he found it.
āMmmm you stoppedā Dolores says drowsily.
āForgive me mi amor, go back to sleepā he whispers.
She smiles when he kisses her head, and returns to work.
He sees it, in this moment. What their lives can be together. He seeās them old and grey, still on this bench, because some things never change.
He canāt wait.
