I found the culprit. It was Michael Dimartino who pushed the "Zuko's a bad boy" narrative 😐.

I hate how his defense for why Zutara shouldn't happen is not because he betrayed her but because he hired an assassin to kill Aang 🙄. Mind you, Aang isn't even pissed at Zuko for almost killing him numerous times. Why should Katara hold onto a grudge for Aang's sake? If Aang can be Zuko's friend, why can't she date him?

I hate how KAs and Bryke try to make it seem like it would be disrespectful of Katara to date Aang like she owes him some shit.

The thing where Katara is supposed to be insanely and irrationally protective over Aang, to the point where she would still hate Zuko for trying to kill Aang, even though SHE canonically forgave Zuko (and her grudge was more about her own personal hurt than it ever was about Aang) and even though Aang doesn't even hold a grudge goes back to the mom stereotype.

This is what is so frustrating about the way Katara is both derided for mothering everyone (especially Aang) and also criticized for it.

These people don't just want Katara to be crazy overprotective of Aang, they rely on it.

It's the stereotype of "yeah, she's a pain, but what would the men in her life do without her?"

We see Sokka acknowledge how much he relies on Katara to the point of taking advantage of her and it's just never an arc for him.

He should've realized how bad this is for Katara and decided to take on more and let Katara rest. But it's just seen as "that's how she is" and not "that's who she was forced to be."

Wicked Wonderland is a blast!

So I saw the new movie and I liked it a lot, it's definitely stronger than Rise of Red though it still has it's flaws.

Timeline Changes

I think it's pretty safe to say that the previous movies still happened more or less the same since Beast's statue and livery are still around but more importantly Carlos's portrait is still in the Headmistress's office:

FG also mentions Uma meeting with the council to discuss the disaster in Wonderland so I'm just going to assume Ben, Mal, Evie etc are there too.

Other than Pink the new characters are treated like they always existed and Hazel mentions her father talking to "us" so Harry, Harriet, and CJ are probably still around too.

The only significant changes seem to be Pink existing, Bridget being nicer(?) , Cinderella being more of a perfectionist, Maddox being evil, and Max being a VK.

Maddox

So apparently teenage Maddox saw Red and Chloe time travel and became obsessed with the pocket watch as a result.

So much so that it turned him evil and completely mad when nobody believed him, eventually landing him on the isle until the barrier came down and Bridget decided to let him back into Wonderland.

Big Mistake.

And yet for all the build up Maddox goes down pretty easily once the kids get their shit together.

I have a question though, Maddox was the original inventor of the time machine and he made a device that can see into the previous timeline, so why can't he just make another pocket watch?

Bridget and Ella

They're still besties and apparently they can visit each other through a looking glass in Ella's castle which is sweet.

However it seems that Ella let royalty take over her life to the point of perfectionism and Bridget may still be dealing with some demons of her own which keep them from connecting with their daughters.

As much as I enjoyed their song, it was clear the movie didn't have enough time to fully go into the issue as it only comes up sporadically, feels rushed and is easily solved at the end.

It seems like they used a cut scene from ROR in "The girl I used to be":

Since I doubt they got Ruby Rose Turner and Morgan Dudley back just to do this five second scene.

So apparently Bridget had a thing with Gaston and I'm kind of hoping he's not Red and Pink's dad, though this does open up the possibility. Gaston and Hook are just man sluts I guess.

Oh and evil Bridget? She's still in there:

I guess it wasn't just the prank that sent her over the edge.

Red and Chloe

Both girls are reeling from the timeline changes and this may be controversial but Chloe isn't entirely sympathetic to me here.

Being upset with how her mother changed is valid, not trusting the VK's I can understand, and the incident with the flower is also understandable(even if Red wasn't actually "using her as bait").

But being upset that Red gets along with the VK's or didn't listen to her idea one time is less understandable.

Red and Chloe have known each other for 2 or 3 days tops, but Chloe acts as though their relationship should be perfect and Red should always have the same opinions as her(in regard to the VK's) with anything less being a horrible betrayal when that's just not realistic.

Chloe's idea regarding the spy bird was good but it also had flaws, such as how Chloe was going to rewire it without tools or if she even could depending on how good she is at electronics or how sophisticated the spy birds are.

And solely blaming Red for the time travel issues? Chloe, girl, you were a willing part of that too, you agreed to change time too so you also bare responsibility for this too.

Never mind that Red is also going through a tough transition in this new timeline, not just Chloe.

I'm not saying Chloe is awful or that Red is innocent, I'm saying they were both having a difficult time and ignored each other's pain in the process, not to mention they were both responsible for changing time so it shouldn't be just on Red.

They do make up in the end though which is what actually matters.

Granted I think a lot of the issue was due to the movie not having the time to flesh everything out properly, if there had been more time I think both Red and Chloe would have a better storyline.

Max

Max's story is all about his dad.

Turns out he's not working with his dad, he just doesn't want to be judged for his father's actions anymore which is extremely valid.

And then he finds out about the previous timeline and the good life he had before Red and Chloe changed things.

Oh the poor boy, he just wants a dad who loves him and he's right changing time did ruin his life yet neither Red nor Chloe can bother to say sorry until later.

So of course he makes Chloe an evil bracelet that corrupts her and sets off to get the pocket watch to change time back.

Fortunately Red and Pink stop them, with Red promising to help Max and his dad, a promise she keeps when she stops her mom from taking Maddox's head.

I do like that Red ultimately decides not to mess with time anymore, she's right that Max and Chloe going back in time wouldn't fix things and may actually make things worse.

I'm confused about this pool she tosses the pocket watch into, I guess no one can can get there but what exactly is it?

Chessy

Okay I'll say it, Awkwafina did a good job with this role.

I still don't understand Chessy's motives though, she spends the whole movie working with Maddox and manipulating the other characters but I don't understand why.

To cause chaos I guess?

Hazel

I really felt like they could have done more with Hazel, I liked her but it feels like she just there because the writers know that the Hook family is popular with the fandom.

Apparently she ripped Tinkerbell's wings off, ouch.

Luis

I liked him and his romance with Red was sweet, if somewhat rushed. I can't be the only one who thinks their duet was giving Bal vibes, right?

One thing though, apparently Luis feels the same pressure his mother did when it comes to the Madrigal gifts even though things were supposed to be getting better for the family at the end of that film.

I guess the writers didn't actually watch Encanto...

Pink

Pink is my favorite character next to Max, she's so bubbly but she also has depth.

Unfortunately like a lot of things in this movie, there clearly wasn't enough time to flesh her out properly.

She talks about always putting on a front of happiness while hating being left behind all the time and living in Red's shadow while knowing she's barely tolerated by her older sister but not a lot is done with that.

We do get some flashbacks to her and Red as children and the girls are on better terms by the end of the movie but outside of maybe two scenes Pink's feelings aren't focused on as much as they should be.

Though that might be addressed in Descendants 6?

We have a few hints but nothing concrete yet.

Everyone else

Robbie, Felix, the twins, FG, and even Prince Charming were just there which sucks because I feel like at least Robbie and Felix could've been more than they were, especially given that they have useful skills.

All in all I enjoyed the movie, flaws and all.

For one, it's not about Maddox making a new pocket watch; it's about finding the already existing one in order to prove he was not crazy and he knew what he saw. It's a bad ending for Candace Flynn's situation; it's about proving she's not crazy and speaks the truth.

Listen, it was the wildest week for Chloe, so excuse her for wanting some stability in her relationship with Red rather than expecting her to go back and forth, especially if the results of it are the flower incident, altered timeline, and indeed trusting VKs Red doesn't know about her friend that already proved herself in their last crazy quest. Also, we should clarify that just because Chloe was caught up in this fiasco and didn't entirely protest, it's not like she exactly signed up for time travel. Red herself said she never planned for Chloe to tag along, and Red would change the timeline regardless, which could've still had major consequences on Chloe, and Chloe calls out Red for still treating her as a tag-along and not a partner-in-crime too. Indeed, both girls are going through a rough time, and both are being unfair towards one another, but we have to commit to the bit and not downplay who's more or less sympathetic; we're literally dealing with polar opposites wrecking each other's worlds and not knowing how to handle it. It's going to be messy on both sides and tragic on both sides, too.

No idea what that fountain is supposed to be. I thought it was some already existing reference to Wonderland, but apparently not.

The thing is Red was also having a tough week and it's just as unfair to expect her to immediately be an HK or immediately be okay with having a sister when five minutes ago she was an only child living under an abusive parent in what was essentially a police state.

Both Chloe and Red were going through a tough time and you're right it's messy on both sides.

Red pretty much brought this upon herself, though. Like Chloe didn't have any say in Red entering the picture, but Red did take the pocket watch and used it, knowing the risks. Red is the instigator of all the events, something even Chessy points out, as hard of a pill to swallow as it is for Red.

It's not about expecting Red to be an HK; it's about expecting Red to be her ride-or-die after they time-traveled together and almost died because of it. Chloe wants commitment from her one-week sapphic situationship.

The Queen of Hearts is the one who threw a coup(which she used Red to do and which Red didn't know about until it was already happening) and decided to behead Cinderella.

Uliana was the one who bullied QOH to that point.

Chloe chose to help change the past once she was there and even before that she chose to get into it with Red.

Maddox made the pocket watch in the first place specifically to help Red even knowing the consequences.

Red didn't force any of them to do any of that, she's not innocent by any means since she did decide to time travel(though her initial plan was only to go back a few minutes before the coup and take her mother's cards, she had no more choice in going that far back then Chloe did since the watch was activated by their fight, once there Red and Chloe mutually decided to change the past) and mess with things but she's not the sole instigator of everything either.

Sure, but it's Red who insisted to stay in the past they time traveled into rather than go back to anywhere near present. Chloe agreed after the fight of their lives but beforehand she just wanted to go back. There are many things beyond Red's control, but it still was her idea and decision to remain in the past to prevent the prank with Chloe reluctantly agreeing to it.

I never bashed Chloe, I'm trying to point out that she has responsibility for the time change just like Red does and that while her feelings are valid to a point she wasn't right about everything in WW.

And I don't disapprove of that, but it doesn't mean that Chloe suddenly can't be upset and has to shut up about everything, especially when she had already way less to say regarding this whole deal than Red did. Of course, Chloe wasn't right about everything, but she was right that Red didn't value their bond and her judgment nearly as much as she should. Both Red and Chloe had their shortcomings on full display throughout this entire movie.

As to Red and Chloe's "bond" they've known each other for three days tops, they're trauma bonded but they don't know everything about each other yet, they aren't even really that close and Red is allowed to have relationships with other people.

Likewise Chloe knows nothing about Wonderland or Maddox and she doesn't really try to rectify that , so she's not exactly the best person to be making judgements about the current situation as shown with her getting Robbie literally thrown off the chess board.

Then what's the point of complaining that Chloe got upset? Like if we're going to say both Red and Chloe, were in the wrong while saying Red was sympathetic for it, Chloe has to be too. They're in this together.

Excuse you, it's been 5-6 days, and it was a crazy trauma-bonding session for them. Felix and Robbie literally did the same with the teacups.

Furthermore, Chloe at least has those 5-6 days, while everyone else, including Red, met just this morning. It's not even about having relationships with other people, just valuing their judgment over hers. She can't trust Chloe because they don't know each other that well, but Max and Hazel are fine? Like, Red doesn't know Hazel, and they're on the same wavelength, and this timeline's Max is a far cry from the nerd he used to be. Oh, and let's also not forget Red falling for Luis (which really, Chloe is Bridget to Red's Ella because Bridget also initially liked the idea of Ella and Charming together until Charming basically stole Ella away when Bridget needed her).

It's not like Max said anything during the chess game, or Pink, for that matter, and Red also doesn't know Wonderland either. Kind of the point. And heck, both Chloe and Red went back in time to unfamiliar grounds where Chloe only had some history context but didn't know more than Red did regarding Bridget's situation in the past, and what do you know, both Red and Chloe managed despite it being blind leading blind through that time. Chloe has every right to believe this can work the second time, even if she's wrong about it. It's not like she ever got to finish the game on her own terms; Red just shut her down after Hazel dressed her down.

You're putting words in my mouth, I never said Red was sympathetic and Chloe wasn't.

They are both going through a tough time, they are both sympathetic and they both did wrong to each other.

The issue is that both film and fandom refuse to hold Chloe accountable for her own screw ups while dumping everything on Red.

Why does Red have to listen only to Chloe? Why can't Chloe compromise and work with the VKs instead of judging them and pushing them away every time until almost the end of the movie?

Why are we mad at Red for the plant thing but not Hazel for being complicit in Red's plan to use Chloe?

There's been a landslide of people complaining about Red dismissing Chloe and not checking in on her but I can't recall a single instance of Chloe checking on how Red was doing in the new timeline, in fact when Red expresses discomfort at being an HK Chloe just smiles and moves on never considering why Red is having difficulty, even though she spent the last movie learning that Red didn't grow up like that.

Red doesn't know Wonderland as a happy bright place but she still knows doing things the regular way isn't going to work there.

Hell that's why she turns to Max and Pink because they do know Wonderland and Maddox, it's not about trusting them more or liking them better it's about stopping a villain.

Whether it's three or five days, that doesn't change that Red and Chloe haven't known each other long or that a trauma bond(which is unhealthy to begin with)is not the same thing as knowing someone intimately.

Red and Chloe's trip to Merlin Academy isn't comparable to what happened in this movie since they didn't have anyone else to help them before and normal rules still more or less apply at Merlin Academy whereas with Wonderland they did have people who could help(Max and Pink whom Chloe dismissed and ignored) and Wonderland doesn't work on real world logic but Chloe won't compromise.

If Red had done what Chloe wanted and ignored everyone else to focus only on Chloe's plan they never would've gotten off that chessboard.

Felix, Robbie, the twins, Max, and Hazel weren't insisting that everyone do what they wanted and throwing fits because Red wasn't focusing exclusively on them.

Red connects with Luis and Hazel because they get things about Red that Chloe doesn't (being raised a VK for Hazel and having abusive pressure from family for Luis), it doesn't mean that Red doesn't have a bond with Chloe anymore.

If connecting with new people and forming new relationships is a betrayal of old friends then I don't know how any friendships are supposed to last.

Chloe and Red were both having a hard time in the new timeline, they both ignored and dismissed each other and they are both responsible for Maddox becoming evil but only Red is called out for those things.

I just want Red and Chloe to be held equally responsible for what they did.

"Why not be mad at Hazel for being complicit?" Because Chloe has no expectations of Hazel (and neither do we, like she's Hook's daughter, do you expect her to be moral and righteous or even care about Chloe? We joke about them crushing on each other, but they're not friends like Red and Chloe). Like, Chloe can be mad at Hazel for just existing and dissing her. You might as well say the sky is blue.

There are plenty of people who actually refuse to see Chlo's side of the story by diminishing her struggles. In general, the idea that Chloe must somehow lose sympathy points just isn't right, like perhaps people would be more willing to focus on Red's side of things if it wasn't at Chloe's expense. And it's not like Chloe isn't understanding of Red's situation. The first time they have a conversation about it under the tree before Red goes to comfort Max, when Red explains her perspective, Chloe doesn't argue with that. The problem is that Red ultimately got too stuck in her own head, which is due to her going through a transition period from having to rely on yourself alone to letting the idea of relying on others. I can't fault her for that, but it doesn't erase her mistakes.

It should be noted that in the previous film, not only did Red express the idea of liking potentially being an HK (despite not comprehending the full implications of it), along with proving to Chloe she's a good person, but of course, Chloe doesn't register that Red is having a way harder time (as Red even in the very beginning of the film says "how hard can it possibly be"), especially with how much Red benefitted from time travel.

Red knows that she has to think like a villain to best one, but this isn't Wonderland-exclusive logic.

Also, Red doesn't really turn to Pink /9something Chloe wouldn't mind, as she's friends with Pink). She ignores her, and, like, Red turned to Max regarding the Dodo bird. Mind you, Chloe didn't want Red to do that because she doesn't trust Max, but when she still proposes the idea, does Red wait for Max to include his input on it? No, she already jumps to the "no, we must destroy it because Max's first idea wasn't to tinker with it".

Oh, so they totally didn't get help from both Bridget and Ella regarding everything? Also, once again, you miss the point that not only is the Wonderland logic or Pink and Max being more knowledgeable about Wonderland not a factor in the slightest, it's about Chloe no longer being Red's partner-in-crime. Like, having a team is cool and all, but at least let's make choices together and cooperate, considering the last time they succeeded precisely like that.

Chloe has no guarantee that they'd never get off the chessboard. Mind you, Red's method also wouldn't get them anywhere because Maddox literally reset the entire board, meaning that all the fighting up to that point was in vain, so Red conjured up a new plan with the flower.

None of them is Red's close friend, and none of them went with her on her last mission to save the world. They're all literally rookies.

Chloe, however, did question if Red's newfound bonds make her bond with Chloe redundant, as that's why she's upset. They're kids, they care about each other, and it hurts both of them to think they'd lose each other, especially if they're about to drift away. Chloe just cracked first regarding it, but Red was also cracking over it when Chloe got corrupted.

Red and Chloe can be equally held responsible, but only if you won't suddenly say one is less sympathetic. Acknowledge both the pains and faults of the girls, instead of being like, "but Chloe can't be entirely sympathetic in this scenario," like Red didn't literally agree to Chloe self-degrading herself with "goody two-shoes," with Red saying, "if the shoe fits" to a Cinderella daughter. I can still bring Red's trauma for further context to it, hands down, without the need to say Chloe is less sympathetic in this situation after receiving such a brutal jab.

I said that they should be equally held responsible for their actions, something neither the movie or the fandom does.

Both the movie and the fandom solely blame Red for everything while putting Chloe on a pedestal and ignore Red's problems.

Bridget and Ella helped them with personal problems, not time travel or saving the kingdom.

Pink and Max knowing Wonderland is relevant because how else would anyone know how to proceed or how Maddox thinks?

Red goes to Max about the spy bird because he knows what it is and how it works, there was no guarantee that Chloe's plan would work so why should Red risk an uncertainty that could get the group killed, hurt or captured over the more certain option of destroying the bird?

Chloe's feelings are not more important than the rest of the group's wellbeing, Bridget and Ella's lives, or the wellbeing of Wonderland.

Red shouldn't be putting one girl above everyone else, that's selfish.

But clearly we aren't going to agree so goodbye.

I'm sorry, but what else do you mean by saying Chloe isn't entirely sympathetic while coming to Red's defense, like we don't know this girl is going through it?

I constantly hear people shit on Chloe for having issues (to the point someone even edited the Wikipedia page in a very humorous but uncharitable way towards her), like heck, even now I came across someone saying the conflict didn't make sense on CHLOE'S end of things. So I don't know where you got the idea that the entire fandom only holds Red accountable. The movie also does have Chloe literally become evil, which by default does not make her in the right, and of course she wouldn't succeed in chess, everyone can agree with that, but the point of Chloe being upset is not about whether or not she was right. Like, don't apply logic to feelings; it's never going to work like that. Humans feel emotions despite logic or reason.

Bridget and Ella gave Red and Chloe crucial information on how to succeed. Ella gave reasons behind Uliana targeting Bridget, where her hideout is, and Bridget told the girls where to find the book that would be used to prank Bridget, and she introduced them to the looking glass to see whether or not their efforts are paying off already through the butterfly effect. So it wasn't just personal issues, though Ella at least managed to push Chloe into committing to the overall mission.

It's not relevant because Red doesn't rely on Pink, and Max only contributes in theory, but he doesn't take charge when it comes to foiling Maddox's strategy. He only gives the idea regarding Oraculum, an idea we don't follow through with anyway.

Red didn't even ask Max if he thinks those birds can be rewired. She didn't advocate for Chloe's idea there. If Max confirmed it's no use, then I don't think even Chloe would argue too much or be butthurt about it, but the whole point is that no one even bothered to try with her idea in this case. So Chloe will always have this "what if" back in her mind.

The disregard for Chloe's feelings almost caused Chloe fucking up the timeline with the pocket watch. Chloe is prioritising the mission, knows what's at stake, and wants to help and contribute, but she's not allowed to do so, and her feelings are basically being ignored. Even now, you argue that it's somehow for the best for Chloe's feelings to be ignored, like, hell, are you even on at this point?

It's not about putting one girl over everyone else; heck, I already proved that Red does not, in fact, value others' opinions in a meaningful way to the mission.

If you want to end this conversation, fine, but the problem is not solved, and if anything, it's even worse.

We need them to react to Rise of Red! I need to see everyone's existential crises when they realize that everything they know is due to Red and Chloe's intervention, so they can start forming sides about whether time travel is the best solution for everyone.

That's most likely one big conversation Red has to go through after the dance party of Go Live it.

The most affected are Bridget, Pink, and Ella, with Max and Maddox getting additional context and Chloe already knowing it, while Luis, Hazel, Robbie, Felix, and the Smees just react to it from the outside.

I understand that Maddox is crazy and all (he's done a lot of questionable things too), but I also have this huge need to hug him and Max to tell them everything is okay, to give them comfort.

Go ahead. No one's stopping you, and that's pretty much how you were supposed to react to his character. Acknowledge his madness but feel bad for him and want what's best for him, and this, of course, extends to Max too.
