reminder to visit museums, even if you feel out of place. you feel out of place because there is an established concept of inaccessibility of "high culture" to the masses, purposefully developed to distinguish between social classes.
take up space, read the plaques, get the audioguides. you are just as entitled and right in being there. visit museums, boycott museums, be expressive about your opinions about museums.
a lot of museums are free, or discounted for youth and students. take advantage of that. check your local art museum. check your local history museum. museums are there for you, they are there to educate the public, not to distinguish between class. it isn't a private collection, it's a public exhibit.

'Take up space' OK but this is so important, because that's your museum, that's your gallery, and if you want to spend half an hour staring at one painting that makes your soul feel all tingly, then you can absolutely do that, and don't let anyone make you feel weird for doing anything other than spending 10 seconds looking at something and then dismissing it with a sardonic grin
think the biggest sign of tumblrs aging population is how we went from posting about how unethical and ineffective assigning homework in schools is to deciding that humanity is fucked because kids these days aren't writing essays with is much enthusiasm as you have for your fanfic about two white guys from the Pitt
if you are currently in school and you somehow see this post, heed my warning. any adult on here telling you essays/homework/school is easy or something you must be grateful for is fucking compromised. they do not relate to you, care about you, or respect your autonomy.

As a teacher, I do not assign homework, but I do teach my students how to write essays. It's more important than ever for people to have critical thinking skills and the ability to discern reliable sources from unreliable sources. My colleagues and I deeply, deeply care about our students and their wellbeing. We are working overtime for low pay to educate young people. The fact so many people are lacking literacy and critical thinking skills is a major factor in the rise in fascism in this country.
Look, if you were right that education was some grand conspiracy to browbeat young people into submission, the right would be pouring money into schools. They'd be spinning their propaganda machines about how important schools and teachers are. Instead, they have done everything they can to knee cap public education and vilify teachers. They frame colleges as liberal brainwashing factories. They do not want you to be educated. They don't want people to think for themselves. There's a reason fascists kill intellectuals and burn books.
The students who need education the most are the most marginalized. The people who will struggle most to survive WITHOUT an education are the ones who come from oppressed backgrounds, who feel disempowered and already have odds stacked against them. A couple of centuries ago, slavers didn't want enslaved people to read. Right now, rich white oligarchs don't want young people of color to know how to read either.
Anti-intellectualism is a cornerstone of fascism. Leftists who adopt it are doing nothing to further the cause of ending oppression whatsoever.
THANK YOU for this addition. The people arguing with you have such a privileged global northerner perception of the world, they can't even begin to imagine the reality for most people that is that education is liberation, even if that education comes from a flawed system.
Of course the current school system sucks! Saying that a teacher doesn't realize that is insane! We're literally the ones who fight the hardest to improve it! However we need to face reality as it is, not as how we wished it was.
However people feel about doing homework doesn't matter when you take into account the fact that studying is the only path out of poverty for the majority of people.

I never said teachers don't know the school system sucks. In fact I never mentioned teachers anywhere at all in my post, but it is interesting how many of you chose to center yourselves over children when I talk about homework.
Global northerner here, I'm sure I do have a relatively privileged perception of the world. But you seem to have got the impression somewhere that I like, loathe education? I love education, I have pride I accomplished what I did. And if it were possible in my transphobic country, I would probably be a teacher.
Here 8 in 10 teachers are paying out of pocket for food clothes and supplies for their students, and they're not getting paid well.
Where I'm getting at is as much good as you are doing, you don't have the power to actually stop kids from coming in hungry or tired, you can't manifest funding for your schools, you can't stop the deeping workload or increased expectations on kids entering an increasingly competitive job market that requires an undergraduate degree as bare minimum. So like, fuck off? I'm criticising an institution way above your station and telling young people not to kill themselves trying getting an A.
I trust people who see my posts to examine it for the context it's in and whether or not that relates to their situation. If a kid from the global south sees this and doesn't relate then I'm sure they're smart enough to figure that out for themselves.
Though I think they relate a lot more than you think teach.
Oh my god this is typical global northerner shit. When you make statements like these and you forget to include most of the world's population you're doing a disservice, in fact you're spreading anti intellectualism that is precisely what is driving poor people from pursuing a path in life that will improve their livelihoods as a whole! Talk to me when you had to face entire classrooms of low income children who have been tricked by this exact kind of rhetoric and now are giving up their spots in the best colleges in the continent to buy onto some bullshit they learned from the internet, while rich children remain being highly educated and can exercise their critical thinking skills daily. Talk to me when you've lived in a country where education literally saved people from starvation, talk to me when you've lived through your family getting out of poverty because of education, talk to me when you've read even a little bit of education theory, or hell, anything that wasn't made by privileged people like you! Because it's REALLY easy to scoff at education when you've taken it for granted your whole life.
If you're poor and you're reading this: The system fucking sucks, I know. But education is your ONLY way out, and it's the only thing they will never take from you, no matter how hard they try. You should fight to occupy those spaces, you should fight to have access to knowledge, because knowledge is liberation. Do it at your own time and pace, ask for accommodations when you need, but do NOT let go of education. It's our main weapon.
