Another sneak peak of my master degree final project! #graphicdesign #master #finalproject #degree #proud #recipes #cookbook
**drumroll** Here is a finished print test!
I’m so excited an so pleased with the final result! Some colors look slightly over saturated and it will surely need a night or two under pressure so that it stays closed, but overall I think it looks good.
I think I’ve achieved the look & feel i had in mind for my book: a nicely crafted piece that looks valuable and worth keeping but at the same time friendly, approachable, and not over designed.
Deadline approaches fast and the printing of my zines proceeds frantically. On the left my zine n°1 printed in full color awaiting to be trimmed, on the right zine n°2 printed in cyan and magenta. When the second zine will be done I’ll start printing the third and last zine.
Although they’re not finished yet, I’m already very pleased with the results and with the printing technique that I choose to use. The more I print the more confidence and expertise I gain with the Risograph printer: at first I found it quite difficult to align each layer of color but I think I’m finally getting a good grasp of it and I think it is possible to see my improvements from the first to the last zine.
On the other hand though, I’m also not to worried about imperfections in the print as this is one of the main characteristics I like about this method: when the colors are not perfectly aligned, new textures and patterns are created and this gives depth and character to final piece, it makes it unique.
Format and layout tests for my zines: in the top picture the tabs on the right side are full length, in the bottom picture they overlap each other.
I think that the second solution work better as it keeps the size of the zine smaller and more compact.
Food Illustrations
Quick look into how I designed the food elements for my cookbook. The general concept I had in mind was to create minimalistic and flat illustrations: to do so I started from a realistic picture of each piece of food (or equipment) and tried to break them up into simple geometric shapes. I then worked with these shapes to create icon-like illustrations, trying to keep them symmetrical when possible.
To add character and depth to my illustrations I decided to use textures and patterns to color them.
The hardest part of this process has surely been building consistency throughout all illustrations: the looked all very different at first and for this reason I had to start setting some rules and gradually make sure that all the illustrations would fit in.
Thinking of a simple binding like this one for my zines
These days, more and more home chefs are using their laptops and iPhones to find recipes -- and they are using traditional cookbooks less and less. Lynn Neary reports on the cooking app craze and how it will affect the future of food publishing.
Very interesting article about cookbooks and digital revolution
