Vehicle Reference and Creating Coexistent Props

So this design and character was created to be a part of my flying fortress assignment. These two are meant to be a part of the same world. I did this on the fly and I’m actually happy with the idea.

Reference and Study

Reference from The Book of Life created and directed by Jorge Gutierrez, concept art by Paul Sullivan.

What I love about the concept art in the Book of Life is that while its fun and cartoony and plays around with angles and lines ... it still feels real. It still looks like something you would see in the streets of Mexico. Full of ... life.

Replicating the texture digitally was a challenge, especially with only using stock brushes, but I’m pretty happy with how it came out.

Inspiration and References

When I first developing this concept I had an image from a tattoo I had seen done by @mattwmurray in mind. At the time I looked for references through the Character Design Challenge pinterest page. They are normally really good at crediting artists, but looking back for the references I used I found many weren’t cited. I have done my best to trace them, but if anyone knows the “unknown” artists please send me the info so I can update this.

For this assignment we had to come up with a fortress and an air and ground transport. I thought it would be fun if my fortress was also an air transport.

I feel like my rough sketch has more substance than what I finished with. I plan on rehashing this concept.

🔑 Poses & Environment Design

This was my first attempt at visualizing NOAH’s air stream trailer. I realize that there are a lot of things are placed in unrealistic areas. Lesson learned! You can never have too many references!

Evolving Design and Style

It’s funny looking back at my assignments and 👀 how I’ve changed certain things in terms of how I draw. I’ve simplified some things, become more loose - but looking at these, I realize there are certain marks and details that I like -  So a goal of mine is to re-introduce some markings and details.

march of robots

I decided I would participate in this year’s #marchofrobots, especially because my personal project is a story about a robot. I’m hoping to explore my character and some more design choices a long the way.

So, I introduce to you, NOAH.

I decided to recycle a drawing I had in my sketches from when I was first exploring NOAH’s design.

I love this pose because it really shows NOAH’s personality, and what he is about. He loves making ramen because he loves feeding people. He has a natural instinct to want to help and is naturally caring.

Object Inspired Assignment I decided to go with a “death motif” and started with the 💡 of a “⚰️-mobile.” Then I remembered that hearses exist, and I thought of ways I could combine the two ideas. I had originally started with a pretty typical looking grill of a 1931 Henney Hearse, but was prompted to come up with something shaped like a ☠️ to push the motif further. This is the end result. I wish I held on to the original sketches. I have this habit of cleaning out sketches I’m not going further with. I broke the artist rule: HOLD ON TO EVERYTHING!
