Currently I am reading two books because one is much more portable than the other. The People of Paper by Salvador Plascencia I have just started and it is interesting and a different style of writing then I am used to reading. He opens the book with, “She was made after the time of ribs and mud. By papal decree there were to be no more people born of the ground or from the marrow of bones.” This made me instantly think about God and the creation story. Who is she? And how old is she?
Thinking more into it... it also makes me think about people who have what some may call blind faith. Believing in something because it is convenient or what your told to believe shows a lack of self growth. Papal which relates to Pope makes me think also of my Catholic upbringing and how I never understood how one human could be better than another or closer to God because he wears a fancy robe and has a bunch of followers... Hmm. About what about this new Pope, what is he all about? Do I believe in God?
- Contemplating life. Learning new things. Challenging new minds. New minds challenging me. Doubting Thomas. What does all of it really mean?
Laurie R. King, uses Margery Childe, a feminist and public speaker, in A Monstrous Regiment of Women as a tool in discussing both feminism and religion. Mary Russel befriends Margery and using her Oxford groomed mind, begins to educate Margery on the true translations and meanings of passages in the bible. One of Margery’s biggest issue she tries to uncover is that women and men are created equal in God’s own image and that humanity was not whole or complete until God created Eve. Throughout the story (so far) Mary is not afraid to stand up against Margery and educate her on the true translations and Mary’s view on feminism. I agree with Mary in her thinking that men and women should be equal, not that women are more important or stronger than men. Rather, they should just have the same opportunities and not be limited on aspects on gender, but on one’s own self including intelligence, physicality and qualification. I have always found it interesting that feminism and feminists get such a bad rep, because of a few women who interpret feminism or call themselves feminists and hate men. That is not what feminism is about nor is that the purpose of its existence.
There’s either a tiger in each of us or an ‘each of us in every tiger’. Either way, that’s pretty great.
Are you worth dying for?
What is worth fighting for? Is a cause or movement worth you life? Is giving your life up for the betterment of the whole brave? Is it worth it?
In the world the Mirabal sisters grew up in, there was strong feelings and actions put in place that made many of the DR’s people inspired an they took up arms against the infamous Trujillo. Three of the Mirabal sisters were wrapped up in the revolution, as was their husbands and many of their friends. Although Alvarez never wrote directly why the sisters joined the revolution, it is clear through their actions and their goals that their reasons for joining were to make a better life for their families, their friends and their people as well as taking out Trujillo who they hater so much. Their initial spark was their hatred towards Trujillo, and that is the thing that pushed them forward into the revolution. That in addition to their own personal problems which only fed the fire.
The Beekeeper’s Apprentice
There is a quote that says, “Some people come into our life and quickly go, others stay and leave footprints on our hearts and they are never, ever forgotten.” I’m not sure if that is exactly how that quote goes or not, but it goes something like that. It basically is saying that some people come into our lives and change us for the better or worse, while others simply pass through and don’t have a lasting effect. In the book, Russell and Sherlock happen upon each other and share an instant connection that births a friendship/mentorship. This made me think about how people come into our lives and change and mold our identity. Meeting people in different parts of our lives changes our path and leads us forward.
Goooooooooooooooooooal
120 pages, 24 hours in a day, 168 hours a week, 2 hours of reading. If I were to get the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night, leaving 112 hours that I should be awake. So 9 hours of school and soccer, so thats another 63 hours taken up, plus 12 hours of volleyball a week leaves about 37 hours left for other things such as eating, socializing, homework, and driving of course. Within those 37 hours of I am only expected to 2 hours a week. I read way more than that because I prefer books over TV (unless I find another show like the 100 or the 100 comes out with season 3!!!) I am reading Where There’s Smoke, and it is kind of a mystery/fantasy book. I chose this book because I am trying to branch out and read different authors and different books. I am hoping to start reading more advanced books to increase my vocabulary as well as broaden my horizons. Maybe we would reach our goals more easily if we knew once we reached them someone would yell, “GGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!”
Hmm...
Black and White Make Grey
It is very easy to say that people are good or evil. In movies, we always talk about how the good guy is gonna win, that the evil guy will not be able to defeat the power of the good. But simply calling someone good or bad doesn't quite cover a person. Its the same in society, where the people in jail must be bad people, and people who go to church every sunday must be good people. Humans are more complex than simply two words. In the book, Young Elites, Marie Lu writes a story about malfettos who have nowhere to fit into society but with each other because they are considered to be bad. As the story goes on, the reader begins to see that the good guys aren't always good, and the bad guys aren't always bad. People, like tides, fluctuate. Emotions and thoughts come and go just like the sun rises and then sets.
Humans are impulsive, judgmental, and greedy. These qualities are most commonly considered to be bad. Humans can also be rational, empathetic, and giving, all considered to be good qualities. It is easy to say people like Martin Luther King Jr. or Mother Teresa or even Gandhi are good people, but they even behaved badly in their own lives and acted impulsively. No one is perfect, and good and evil are both within us. It is important to find the balance between which, and try to lean towards the good more than the bad.
As people, we try to put labels on people and fit them into little boxes so things look organized and comfortable. There is no good or bad though, no black and white; everything seems to be a little grey. Everyone is a little good and a little bad.
Is your best friend an alien?
What if there were already aliens on the earth, we just didn't know it because they look like your mom, your classmates, your teachers, or even the President? They looked just like humans, yet they were from another planet and implanted inside human bodies to take over the world in 5 waves? That is what the Infinite Sea is about and it really got me thinking about people and relationships. Can you ever really know someone? Even when people have been with their significant other for years, they still will say they find something new about their partner everyday. So how well can you really know a person? People rarely say everything they are thinking, rather we sensor it to the audience around us for fear of hurt feelings, not being accepted, etc.
Just think about how often you change with the people who are around you, parents, teachers, different peers, your friends, your team. There are certain molds that you have to fit, and sometimes there are certain roles your need to play for a specific team for the benefit of everyone. People are constantly changing, identities shifting with experiences, friends coming in and out of lives, heartbreak and love. Even thinking about our parents... they weren't always parents, they were once young and crazy too!
So the optimistic and what some say more naive Anna wants to say that you can know someone, but the realist Anna isn't as easily convinced. Even after spending hours and hours, days and days, and years and years with someone, you still do not know what they truly think, feel, or want because their is a natural human filter that we all have; just some catch more crap than others.
Hope or Fear?
I have finished The Infinite Sea and it was amazing! I cannot wait for the next book to get to school. What is most interesting about the book is the idea of humans betraying humans. The aliens have divided people into different groups and have taken everything aways from humans, their families, homes, lifestyles, comfort, but they have failed to take one thing that is most important for the sustainability of the human race, and that is hope. Why is hope stronger than fear? Hope drives will and will to live, protect, and live carries more weight than the fear of death. The fear of death drives people, but the hope of living carries greater weight. Cassie doesnt give up on Evan, even when everyone says that he is dead and there is no way he could of lived. Her hope for seeing him again makes her push forward and when she see him, her hope of seeing him is replaced with hope of spending the rest of her life with him. Only one problem, he is an alien. Fear drives people into compliance, hope keeps people moving forward, and makes people break through whatever is holding them down. Hope gives people freedom. Hope is a form of rebellion all in itself.
Are we human or are we dancers?
The Infinite Sea, book two in the Rick Yancy trilogy The 5th Wave, has completely consumed all of my free time. Although my free time is my sleep time, it is worth losing hours of sleep over. The book is told from different characters perspectives' which gives the book more depth than if only told from one persons point of view. Aliens vs. Humans, but how do you tell if someone is an alien if they look like humans? This book has a post-apocalyptic /dystopian like setting and anyone who enjoyed The Treatment, Matched Trilogy, The Hunger Games Trilogy, Divergent Trilogy, The 100, and Revolution will really enjoy this book and the others in this trilogy. It has a lot of udnerlying themes; the conflict between who is on your side, who you can trust, who should you love, all surround the main theme of the power of human nature. I kept wondering in the book as secrets unfolded, can you ever really know someone? Or can you just know what they show you, what they let you see? People show different sides of themselves in different situations, and we as humans all share "human nature" and are always acting in our own self interest, can you ever love someone more than yourself? I have been told numerous times, "there is no selfless act, all acts are for ones own self preservation or advancement."
Do people sacrifice themselves because if the other person died, they couldn't bear to live without them?
I wouldn't consider myself a pessimistic person, in fact I believe I am optomistic, but if human nature is the only thing that is something we all have, can we ever escape it? Evolve into something more kind and selfless? I have always envied people who have no fear of the future, who dance through life with
