Edvard Munch. Towards the Forest. 1897.
“What is home? No, really, I want you to tell me– what is home? Is home the place whose language you learned first or the place whose language fits most easily in your mouth now? What if i don’t know which language i learned first? What if they mix together in my head and the language I learned last suddenly rolls upon my tongue more smoothly than the language I learned first? Is home the place where you lived the longest? Is home the place where you live now or the place where you hope to live five years from now or the place where you want to settle down and die someday? Is home even a place? Is home just made of people? Is it your friends, or your family? What if your friends span three continents? Which friends should I count? The newest or the oldest–the most in number or the most in time? If home is a feeling, can you tell me what it feels like? If home is belonging, where do I go if I don’t fit anywhere? If home is peace, what if I don’t know how to lay down my weapons? What is home? Tell me, please– I am so tired, and all I want is to go home. Where am I supposed to go?”

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov Chapter 4: A Hymn and a Secret (1880)
Amazingly surreal Las Pozas in the rainforest by Xilitla in the Mexico mountains. Created by Edward James in the 40′s, it includes more than 80 acres of natural waterfalls and pools interlaced with towering surrealist sculptures and buildings. The many trails throughout the garden site are composed of steps, ramps, bridges and narrow, winding walkways that traverse the valley walls. It was supposed to be a “Garden of Eden” containing a huge variety of plants and animals.

Bartholomäus Traubeck created equipment that would translate tree rings into music by playing them on a turntable. Rather than use a needle like a record, sensors gather information about the wood’s color and texture and use an algorithm that translates variations into piano notes. The breadth of variation between individual trees results in a individualized tune.

Matthew Simmonds, an art historian and architectural stone carver based in Italy, has created a collection of exceptionally beautiful miniature spaces carved from stone. Having worked on a number of restoration projects in the UK – from Westminster Abbey to Ely Cathedral - his skills have been transferred into work of a much smaller, if not more intricate, scale. Hewn from large stone blocks (some of marble), the level of intricacy Simmonds has achieved in the architectural detailing is almost incredible. Capitals, vaults and surfaces all distort and reflect light in a very beguiling way.
