Round 3 in AC. Love partying with my #family. Ready to see #Diplo! #turnup #jose (at Atlantic City)
Don't ask me why I bought this while in Brazil because I don't even know the answer, but I welcome this new addition on the refrigerator. A pleasant reminder of an amazing tournament that I enjoyed following with both new friends and old friends. I was witness to this beautiful game in Brazil...wow!! Thanks for the memories #worldcup2014
Messing around with the fisheye lens in Manaus during US/Portugal and loving the beautiful blue sky. The atmosphere in these stadiums is incredible and Maracanã will be rockin' on Sunday. #nofilter #MessiTime (at Manaus, Brazil)
"We love ya, we love ya, we love ya. Where you go we'll follow, we'll follow, we'll follow." From Columbus to Manaus and everywhere in between, thank you Timmy. #repost #legend
Walking home. #nyc (at Times Square)
Soccer ➡️ Music. Avicii somewhere in there. I love this month. #dontwakemeup (at Brooklyn Nets Barclays Center)
My new Amazon turtle joining the rest of my work buddies and my Mon.- Fri. World Cup crew for the rest of the tournament. #worldcup2014 #nyc (at New York, New York)
Closing out the trip with a random picstitch. One of the best photos from Rio that didnt get any love. Thanks to Russell, and my roomie, for the tix connection to some amazing games that started it all. My original US trip planning buddies....enjoy the rest of your time in Rio. And to the random, cheesy Brazil decorations that are everywhere....I will miss you. Check out my updated Superlatives on Tumblr, and Rio, I will see you in October! #worldcup2014 (at Manaus - Amazonas)
Superlative Edits/Additions: Coolest people that I will never see again, in no specific order: Shame on me...how could I forget the ones from the beginning: The beautiful and brilliant Brazilian woman I split a cab with from NYC to Newark Airport who who lived in Costa Rica. I knew it was going to be an amazing trip when the first person I met on my travels, even before departing Manhattan, was Brazilian. She was fascinated in my work and was really intrigued about sports and social change. And the Haitian woman who went through the same travel delays with me....she was so sweet, reminded me of my college roommate LT, and I hoped she made it to her final destination on time to enjoy the wedding festivities of her friend in Brazil. Runner up: The cab driver on the way to Lapa in Rio who welcomed 5 people and joined in on the Carlos Bocanegra chants. One of the few times I hate being the only girl and the shortest person because you always get the worst seat in the cab, but having a fun cab driver makes up for it. Runnner up #2: The 3 Americans who within 30 seconds of introductions offered me a beer. It was USA/Portugal game day so we were all decked out in our gear and I loved hearing their World Cup experiences, both past and present, and one of them spoke Portuguese, so he was very helpful in helping me translate to the hotel that I was waiting for a friend. And last but not least, the super friendly, beautiful, English speaking hotel staffer who eventually helped me find my friend. She was the most helpful hotel staffer in my 11 days. I am a big fan of great customer service and we don't get much of that in the Northeast so whenever I experience it I am always pleasantly reminded that there are some really genuinely nice people in this world. Best Tourist Moment: The half day trip to the Amazon takes the lead especially since I did the other things in Rio in 2011. Even if it is touristy as heck, I love doing these things. Gives you a greater appreciation of another place and how people live, you meet new people, it enhances your perspective and without fail, you learn more about others and about yourself. Side note: There is something about being on a boat and feeling the wind rush right by you and smelling the scent of the water/river/ocean that is amazing. My hair gets tangled as shit, but there is no better feeling. Whether it's in Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, Italy, Greece, Hawaii, Fiji, Belize, or the NY/NJ Ferry, I love it each and every time. Best on the pitch moment: Experiencing every range of emotion possible during USA/Portugal: singing the national anthem with 30K US supporters in the Amazon, celebrating the 2 goal comeback, anxiously waiting for that final whistle, and then the complete and utter shock of the final result. You could hear a pin drop in the stadium since fans of both teams were at a loss for words. Runner up: Everytime Ronaldo touched the ball. He was booed and chants of overrated began. I had mixed feelings. His presence is unmatched. Way more than Suarez, Gerrard or anyone on the Spanish team, but it does rival Messi. He is no doubt incredible on the pitch, but he is a whiney ass baby....what you see on TV is true in person. It's a shame, but I still respect him on the pitch and can't bring myself to boo him like everyone else. Best fans: Sorry US, Chile still takes the lead here, although I will create a new category that the US dominated: Best pregame party: Holy goodness I thought I was at EDC in Las Vegas. It was a legit rave and I had no qualms with fist pumping to Alesso and Calvin Harris and rocking to Journey, Born in the USA and every Americana song you could think of. And I bumped into Nancy Laroche so it really doesn't get any better than that. Best travel decision: Flying home from Manaus. I can get to Miami in 5.5 hours whereas everyone else traveling to where the US plays next has to take what seems like 4 flights and some overnight. Domestic travel in Brazil is terrible, but I like to think I did it right with no layovers and early morning flights so I could maximize my time in each city. Best food: Everything in Manaus. Thanks to Luan and his father for making sure we hit the local spots and the native food. It reminded me very much of being home when my parents would talk about all of the food they miss in the Philippines, especially the fruit. Also some of the best food I've had around the world is local fish...fried, grilled, baked, salted, hot sauce, home cooked, restaurant cooked, with rice, in a burger, in soup, by itself, you name it, I love it. Speaking of parents, coolest adults I hung out with on this trip: Easy one, Andre's mom and Luan's dad. Reminded me of my parents....sense of comfort, openness, hospitality, love for their children, pride for their country and they always looked out for me. They welcomed my sense of adventure and for that I am truly thankful. Thing I will miss the most: Looking up and seeing Christ the Reedemer in Rio. Reminds me of Athens, another beautiful city, where you can look up and see the Parthenon. Especially at night, both structures are an amazing sight. Thing that I missed the most in the US: One of my best friend, Si Chen, got married on June 22. She is one of the smartest, most determined and focused people I know (she's a doctor dammit, and actually doing important things in life...so proud of her!) and I love her free spirit. Anyway, I am sad to have missed it, but as fellow US soccer supporters, they knew I was fulfilling my patriotic duties. She looked absolutely stunning in some of the photos I saw and I can't wait to hear all about it. Most, 'wait, really' moment: Realizing that I saw the US/Ghana game at a bar in Ipanema in Rio, the US/Portugal game in the stadium in Manaus, and I'll watch the US/Germany game in good ol' NYC with my coworkers. That is life right there. Number of flights since the NBA Conference Finals (includes layovers): 12...13 and 14 to come shortly, in addition to the shuttle I took from Newark to JFK during the disaster of Day 1 travel. Thank you, Brazil, you're incredible, but at the end of the day, it is what you make of it so I'm thankful to have experienced this with so many amazing people along the way.
Cruising in our private boat on the Amazon. Water and blue skys for days. #teamamazon #animalswelcome (at Manaus - Amazonas)
Fish and juice everywhere. And meat. I love this country and my new faves pirarucu, cupuaçú and açaí. Bummed that I did not get to see @wagnerbebe on this trip but I thank him for his Manaus recommendations! They were all fantastic. (at Manaus - Amazonas)
The beauty of the Amazon. #nofilter #worldcup2014 #brazil (at Manaus - Amazonas)
One more from yesterday with new friends and old friends. Now, time to be a tourist and explore the Amazon! #USMNT #worldcup2014 #brazil (at Arena Povos da Amazonia)
I was so proud of my beach ball. It traveled from Miami to NJ to NYC and through 4 cities in Brazil, of course, deflated, and we launched it after Jermaine's goal. Tough night for #USMNT but it was amazing to be part of the US crowd in the Amazon. On to the next one #USAGER #worldcup2014 (at Arena da Amazônia)
Find me on TV mom and dad! #ItsSunday (at Manaus - Amazonas)
Manaus #FanFest. I still don't understand how a game is being played here, but I will enjoy it while I am here. #SeeYouToday #IBELIEVE #USMNT #worldcup2014 (at Manaus - Amazonas)
Since I missed the daily update on Tumblr (refer to post #1 where I am terrible at documenting my trips outside of photos), I had a nice long flight to the Amazon where I started my World Cup Superlative list. Note this is prior to my trip to the Amazon, so very likely there will be some edits. Best fans: Chile. Hands down. I mean, what other countrymen get arrested because of trying to break into Maracanà for the Spain/Chile game. I can't blame em. Runner up: Colombia, because damn, they are everywhere and apparently their chants are the best. Best fans that don't have a team in the World Cup: Venezuela...that flag, much like the Colombians, is everywhere. Biggest disappointment in fan base: European fans. Been seeing just as many Bosnia fans as English fans or Italian fans. Cmon pounds and euros! Best on the pitch moment: Chilean team comes out an hour before game time and takes photos/videos and waves to the crowd of at least 50k Chilean fans in the building. You know they were appreciating that moment and it was amazing to see. Runner up: Whenever Messi touches the ball, hearing 75K seats hit the back of the chair as the fans stand up in anticipation. Runner up #2: Seeing the brilliance of Stevie Gerrard (minus that one play that cost them the game) and Suarez score two beautiful goals while his fellow countrymen adore him. Scariest moment: Some sketchy dude comes up to hug me in the train station and I immediately cover up my purse and shove him off. At least I was with my friends and there were a ton of cops since it was a game day and a stadium stop. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was a happy Uruguaian (since they had just won) and if he was trying to rob me, he'd probably do it at a different station not so close to the stadium, so yeah, he was just happy. Can I blame the man? Coolest person I met that I will never see again. Warning: too many to name. Andre, the Colombian American from Day 1: Like me, he had massive flight delays and could've missed the Colombia/Greece game but rushed like heck from the airport to the match. He had such a positive outlook on life and loved his family and America, but of course, Colombia came first. Tied with the old Chilean man who sat next to me during the Spain/Chile match who kissed me on my cheek after Chile scored their first goal. It was like a grandfather/grandchild moment so I let him do it again then they scored the second goal. It was adorable. Runner up: The Brazilian artist on the train towards Maracanà: He had no interest in soccer, loved art, wanted to move to France to become a street artist, thought everything me and Joel said was hilarious and said we were really fun people. I think he is right and I wished him the best of luck in his French pursuit. Runner up #2: Those fabulous Australian women in Leblon, who were all about a good time and who gave us their leftover food. We (I) had no shame. Runner up #3: Since we are new FB friends, Chris may see this so he doesn't really count, but I was very thankful to have run into the 3 American dudes who looked out for me in my solo trip to Maracanà for the Argentina/Bosnia game. Who else was I going to ask to take pictures without fear of having my camera stolen? Best thing I learned that turned out to be a waste of time because I never used it this trip: The Spanish supporter chants, but thank you to the gentleman that wasted his time teaching us. - Yo soy espanol espanol espanol - Somos campeones del mundo - Es chileno el que no bote es es - Lolololololo que viva Espanha Moment that I thought for a milisecond I was going to regret: Not selling my Spain/Chile and England/Uruguay tickets to some very generous offers. After giving it some thought for .09 seconds I said, no f-in way. Best tourist moment: A tie: Devouring cheeseballs on top of Sugarloaf and making the most of 30 minutes on Copabana beach. Time well spent with Diana! Best travel decision: Traveling with 2 carry on bags. Yes, I am a girl, but I made it work for the 11 day trip to 4 cities. Many people had their doubts, but I did it. Also, flying into the local airports in Rio and Sao Paulo saved me a lot of time and money. Best travel tip: If you fly into the smaller SDU airport in Rio, sit on a window seat on the right side of the plane. Amazing views if Maracanà, Sugarloaf and Christ the Reedemer. To Luan, thanks for that tip! Best outfit: My Brazilian jersey, again, thanks to Luan. Bet I was the only chick in the country sporting a jersey with 'Padilla' on the back. Best meal: The first meal in Belo Horizonte, which was really my first real meal after a long 24 hours of travel. It was a local buffet style and my Brazilian friends were so confused when the first thing I completely crushed were the pork grinds (chicharon). I told them, listen, I know what's up. And that is how you earn immediate respect in another country. Runner up: The entire day in Sao Paulo which began with pastels de Maria, highlighted by Japanese food and a perfect finish with Italian food and wine shared by great company! Best night out: The US vs. Ghana win, obviously. Singing the national anthem at an Irish bar in Ipanema and then finishing the night with a long walk on Ipanema and Copacabana Beach, drinking from a fresh coconut and cheering alongside every American that passed by. Doesn't get any better than that. Well OK, each night was so much fun...can't say one was better than the other. On any given night you meet people from 10 different countries and everyone is so fun, positive and open and living in the moment. I am thankful for everyone that I met who joined along in the fun ride and I always believe you learn something new everyday from the people you meet and experiences you have, so for that I am truly grateful. And a girl traveling during the World Cup, you rarely pay for any drinks, but it's a shame I don't drink that much. Most random moment: My first day/night in Rio, I was staying with a friend of a friend. Naturally, there was anxiety because I was on my own for Day 1 in Rio, and I've only really communicated with this friend via email and wasn't familiar with where they lived. Within hours after landing in Rio, I received the warmest welcome, met the cutest dog, and had lunch with my new friends at a beautiful rooftop restaurant overlooking Copacabana Beach. That is life my friends. Tied with this moment right now....in the Amazon for a World Cup game where the US can advance to the next round. It doesn't make sense to me (the Amazon part, not the part about advancing), but I will enjoy every second of it!
