Elsa’s smile quietly remained, wishing she had more to say and wasn’t so awkward. It was good to talk to Anna despite that — like normal sisters, at least before everything inevitably changed between them. As normal as the two girls could be. It didn’t help that Elsa wasn’t one to make a big deal about her birthday, or wasn’t typically comfortable in a party setting. She instinctually wanted to avoid big groups of people, but it was difficult when she had responsibilities and obligations to the company, including socializing and networking. The added attention on her birthday though would have contributed further to her anxiety, had her birthday been known by more than just Anna at the event. That was partly why it was so easy to change the subject to her sister instead, and her beautiful appearance this evening. Even though she was trying to divert attention from herself, Elsa’s compliment to Anna was genuine.
In a very Anna-like fashion, the younger sister attempted to downplay the compliment and returned the subject to Elsa. In some ways, both girls had that in common where they struggled with attention on themselves, but Elsa believed Anna to be more naturally charming and easier to converse with than herself. The blonde chuckled lightly. “Thank you.” She sighed with a light smile and turned her head to watch some of the guests enjoying the evening — Elsa was very much an observer rather than a participant when it came to these things. She knew her sister was very much the opposite though. She continued to attempt to make conversation. “I’m surprised I haven’t seen you on the dance floor yet.”
“Me? What about you—it’s your party,” Anna answered, laughing at Elsa’s so-declared surprise that she wasn’t out there tearing up the dance floor yet. It wasn’t for lack of desire that she wasn’t dancing. At first she was making sure everything was going well with the catering from her chocolatier, and then, well…obviously she wanted to sample and enjoy all the other food, too. Then Elsa had greeted her and now they were here! She hadn’t had enough time to get around to boogieing—but it was totally on her list. Could Elsa say the same?
Raising a teasing eyebrow, she asked, “What kind of example are you setting?” It was entertaining to be the one chastising her older sister for once, even if she wasn’t really being serious. There was still a grain of truth in it though. “Maybe if you got out there, more people would feel inspired to join in. People like me!” she suggested in sing-song, gently bumping Elsa’s shoulder with hers. It wasn't so much of a hint as an invitation.
As the two smiled at each other, Squirt lost focus of searching for the key as he began taking in the redhead’s features. Her smile was beautiful, and it temporarily distracted him until he watched her almost trip over her own feet. She was quick to catch herself, initially playing it off and continuing to search for his key. Squirt chuckled. “Honestly? Not really. I mean, some people are naturally good at it,” he shrugged, “but even if that isn’t you, that shouldn’t stop you from still trying it out! Plus, it helps to have a good teacher. I can’t say I’m as good as the rest of my family, but I could still show you the ropes if you wanted.” It clicked as he extended the offer to teach her to surf that he hadn’t even introduced himself yet! He shook his head suddenly. “Sorry dude, I got distracted and forgot basic manners,” he smiled sheepishly, stopping in his tracks for a moment to make sure he could get her name without having her trip again. “I’m Sheldon. Well, that’s my government name,” he continued, holding out his hand for a fist bump rather than a formal handshake, “but everyone calls me by my childhood nickname, Squirt.”
Anna stopped when her potential surf instructor did, laughing it off as he apologized for forgetting to introduce himself earlier. “If we both forgot, I guess that makes us even,” she replied fairly, automatically reaching her hand out to shake his, before realizing he was holding it out for a bump. She quickly changed tack, bumping her fist against his in what she hoped was a smooth enough manner to not embarrass herself twice in a row. She pretty much stumbled around life awkwardly all the time, so she was used to that though. “I’m Anna,” she said, introducing herself in turn. “Government name, because I don’t really have a nickname! Nice to meet you…Should I call you Squirt or Sheldon? If everyone calls you Squirt, I can call you that too, but I don’t know if you wanted to, like—break out of the childhood nickname thing, ‘cause you said Sheldon first…If you’re gonna be my surfing teacher, I should definitely call you the right name.”
Elsa let a small giggle escape her lips as she caught her sister with a mouthful of food. It wasn't typical for the sisters to talk much normally, but the blonde felt herself gravitating toward her sister at an event like this — even if they were hardly close, Anna was still the one person Elsa felt most comfortable with here.
She stayed quiet and patient as Anna began her usual babbling, smiling once she heard the expected Happy Birthday. "Thanks, Anna. I'm glad you're having fun." Though she really preferred not to put any attention on her special day, she didn't fuss when her sister brought it up. Although, a gift was unexpected. "You did?" Her gaze followed where Anna gestured to, and Elsa nodded simply. "That's fine! I .. Thank you, again." An awkward silence followed as other guests from the party continued to enjoy the evening. The blonde nervously fidgeted with her gloves. "You look beautiful tonight, by the way."
“Yeah—of course!” Anna answered Elsa’s seeming surprise about her having brought a gift for her, trying to play it off like no big deal. And really, it shouldn’t be a big deal, except the two didn’t usually exchange gifts for birthdays or even Christmas. Not since they lost their parents, anyway…This year, however, the two of them being present at the same event which happened to fall on Elsa’s birthday offered a perfect opportunity for Anna to give her something without it seeming like she was going out of her way or trying too hard or something. She had stopped really trying to reach out and bridge the awkward gap between herself and her only sister years ago, having never gotten an answer as to why they weren’t as close as she wished to be. But this was potentially a good chance to test the waters again. And Elsa seemed to be receptive so far, even if there was a lull in their conversation before she offered a compliment.
“Oh, this old thing?” Anna smoothed the skirt of her dress, downplaying the praise from her sister complimenting her beauty even as it warmed her up from the inside. Her cheeks glowed as she turned the flattery back around on Elsa, saying, “You look beautiful all the time, so…You know, needless to say, you look beautiful tonight too. But I am saying it, because you do! Look beautiful.” She was rambling again. Better than an awkward silence, Anna thought, unless her incessant chattering ended up pushing Elsa away instead.
"Sweet, me either!" They easily matched each other's energies despite the missing key conundrum. Squirt motioned for her to follow him, already bringing his attention back to the ground to see if the house key had simply fallen out of his pocket on his walk. "Yeah! My whole family does; surfing's in our blood." He met her gaze again with another smile. She seemed to have a lot of questions, which he was happy to answer — since she was helping him find his house key, it was the least he could do! "Some of my older siblings give lessons, but I've helped a few friends with the basics before. You should totally try it out sometime! It takes practice at first, but once you're out there riding the waves, it's soo worth it."
Anna followed his lead, scanning the ground for anything shiny or key-shaped. She looked up when he mentioned coming from a whole family of surfers, catching his smile and returning it immediately. He had such a cute smile: the kind that would brighten a day effortlessly, impossible to resist even if you were the kind of gloomy person who tried to resist contagious smiles (which she totally wasn’t.) “That’s so coo—ooph.” She tripped over her feet and caught her balance, returning her eyes to the ground to continue searching for the missing key or at least to watch where she was going. “That’s cool that your whole family surfs. I’ll have to try it out for sure! Um, no chance the ocean is easier to balance on than flat ground, right?” she joked. Her cheeks were pink from the mild embarrassment of her stumble, but as long as she was the first to make fun of herself, she couldn’t be that humiliated.
Although Squirt gave the stranger the impression that he needed the house key in order to get into his home, the truth was that there would be plenty of people at home to be able to let him in. He was honest though — it was his favorite key! He'd gotten it custom made so it had a cool palm tree design. He'd been so focused on the ground in search of the key, he had yet to look up and see who he was even talking to until now. Looking in her direction, Squirt caught sight of the redhead and smiled, watching as she didn't hesitate to help him out. "I do a lot of walking dude," he admitted, pausing as he thought for a moment about all the places he'd roamed today. "I just walked here from the surf shop I work at .. we should totally start there!"
“Good thing I don’t mind walking!” Anna replied easily. Though she was far from an athlete, walking never seemed like exercise to her. She loved walking around town, window shopping and talking to strangers (who were just friends she hadn’t met yet) or even taking her bike out when she was going longer distances. Even now, all she was doing was enjoying her free time with an aimless stroll; meeting this man in need of help finding his key was just like having unlocked a fun mission to give the day a purpose. “You work at a surf shop? Do you surf?” That was probably a stupid question—who would work at a surf shop if they didn’t? But Anna was just curious—“Do you give lessons? I’ve never surfed before, and it looks so fun…but also like something that looks easier than it is, you know what I mean?”
It was always sort of stressful when Arendelle Ice threw any sort of corporate party, with Elsa expected to delegate and make sure everything turns out perfect. She was far from qualified to throw a party, but luckily the company had enough help to where it didn't all fall on her shoulders. She already had enough on her plate with running the company per usual, and Elsa also just didn't like the pressure that came with parties. All the people, the expectations. However, Elsa knew that Anna loved everything about them; it was the small bit of motivation Elsa needed to make sure that it turned out great. This years holiday party for the company just conveniently happened to fall on Elsa's birthday, though she was hoping to keep the news of her special day on the down-low to avoid extra attention. "Hi." Elsa greeted simply as she came up beside her sister, standing beside the dessert table of course. Elsa had just finished talking to a couple of corporate higher-ups that she already forgot their names; taking a moment to catch up with her sister seemed much more enjoyable. The blonde smiled as Anna realized she was talking to her. "Thanks again for helping with the catering. The chocolates smell amazing." @annahey
“Hi!” Anna spoke through the hors d'oeuvre in her mouth, raising her napkin to cover and wipe her mouth as she did so. It was a little unladylike, but her manners didn’t catch up to her mouth sometimes. She was always caught off-guard when her sister spoke to her, as sad as that sounded. They talked to each other, just…not all the time. They hadn’t been as close as they’d been when they were little kids in so long, it often felt more like they were distant roommates or cousins than sisters. At a party like this, Anna expected Elsa to be socializing more with business partners than her, though it was nice of her to check in and even thank her for services rendered.
“Thank you. I mean, you’re welcome, but thanks for hiring us. This exposure is really gonna boost our sales, so my boss is happy…I mean, I’m happy, too. The party is amazing, as usual. Are you having a good—” Anna cut herself off with the reminder of what day it was. “Oh! Happy birthday! I forgot to say that first.” Since she’d expected to have to approach Elsa on her own later in the night, Anna didn’t have the special gift she’d prepared for her sister on her. She was torn between excusing herself to run out to the catering van and grab the bag of chocolates now, and the fear that if she did Elsa would disappear by the time she got back. “I made you some chocolates, but they’re out in the car,” she explained a little sheepishly, pointing a thumb over her shoulder. “Should I give them to you later?”
@findingsquirt said: "I think I dropped my house key somewhere. That was my favorite key... it opened my house."
“Oh, well, that’s probably the worst thing you could lose,” Anna replied automatically; she hadn’t necessarily had any expectations for what the stranger might be looking around for when she’d asked him, but discovered with his answer that it was a much more critical situation than if he’d just dropped some pocket change or something. That key opened his house, after all! Realizing her response hadn’t been entirely (or at all) helpful, she quickly bent to peek under a bench, making herself useful as a second pair of eyes on lookout for the lost item. “We could retrace your steps! How far have you walked?”
