Annie took a full deep breath maybe for the first time since they arrived. The look on this man’s face was inviting, in a reassuring way. His round brown eyes reflected a glimpse of faith. It nearly put a smile on her face. They took off to the other end of the salon and found the first machine they played with, for luck. It didn’t make sense, none of this did. If loss was inevitable, what could be the excuse not to try? They took the exact same position, with him kneeling beside her, and Annie putting the increased cash with the same right hand. She took a breath, rolled her shoulders, and eyed the drink in Ryan’s hand that was almost all melted ice now. She asked for a sip.

When she was down to her final rash of bacon, she asked, “So, do you want to tell me how I embarrassed myself last night?”

He smiled slightly. “Do you think you embarrassed yourself?”

“I’ve got a feeling,” said Annie. “Will the boys be mean to me?”

Armin shook his head. “No, you didn’t do anything embarrassing at the bar. And they were hammered – Reiner basically fell into the cab home.”

She snorted. “Shouldn’t be surprised.” Then, her eyes narrowed. “What do you mean, at the bar? Did I do something stupid on the street?”

“No,” he said. But he only managed to keep a straight face for about one second before the corners of his lips curled up.

She frowned. “Spit it out.”

“I keep saying to myself that I wish you could see it, and then I remember that you have seen it.” He said, a bitter laugh caught in his throat. “And maybe you all must have been tired and scared and intimidated by all of that open land and no civilization in sight.” He sighed. “Ironic, isn’t it? I’ll never stop thinking that- though I’m sure you would say that I’m beating a dead horse to keep comparing things from the past.”

I would say that, she thought to herself. If only because Armin had never heard the phrase before she said it and was so adorably disgusted at the needless violence of it. Which only made her repeat it every so often to playfully ruffle his feathers.

“I can’t help myself, though… All I ever wanted was to cross the sea and find an empty unassuming world. Maybe not empty- I would have been delighted to find people living somewhere and learn from them even though at the time I couldn’t fully allow myself to imagine it.” He sucked in a breath. “But you four… you got to experience that under circumstances that made it terrible.”

Annie saw it in her mind’s eyes as he described it. She remembered the dryness in her mouth and the pit in her stomach as she and Reiner and Bertholdt and Marcel stared out at the endless dunes ahead of them, hearing the horn blast of the Marleyan steamship as it disappeared on the horizon behind them. Hundreds of kilometers from their family and their past and everything they had ever known.

He was right, she thought, the sea was a bitter memory for her. Not a happy one in the slightest.

But she tried to imagine it now as something different. Maybe there would be some newfound whimsy in it if she had gotten to experience it with Armin.

‘’Stop,’’ she breathed out, knowing it was not enough. She brushed over his lips and pressed her thumb against his lower teeth, just to close that mouth before uncontrollably diving in one more time. As a wall between them, made by what control there was left. Annie intended to say she hated him. Loathed him. That he was a disgusting degenerate for following her here. That he was too thick to understand she didn’t want to see him.

Returning the perception of rejection was needed for her ego. But returning that kiss was needed by something bigger inside, something just as threatening.
