her classroom has a lot of plants. like ... a lot 

is always trying to get the super sporty students involved in art

despite her distaste for athletics, she bleeds purple not red ok

always covered in paint !! paint everywhere

brings extra sandwiches for kids who forget or don’t have their lunch

never EVER assigns homework. doesn’t believe in it

classes open with “tell me one good thing that happened to you today”

can be seen dancing to 80′s pop in her classroom during lunch hour eating grapes while working on a mural project for her side business

you know why it’s so critically important to celebrate women over the age of 40? 

because young women and girls need role models. need someone to aspire to become as they age. 

as it is, society basically tells girls and young women: aspire to be 18-22. do not aspire or imagine past that, for you are useless without youth and beauty. do not aspire to be wise, or strong, beautiful without youth, or valuable with lines and wrinkles. and THAT is scary. we put a cap on aspirations for girls, because we want them to think the ideal comes and goes by 20–when really, we’re at our best for many, many years beyond.

you work at the tattoo parlor next door to my flower shop and the first time you came in i thought you were going to rob me bc holy shit that’s a LOT of tattoos and wow you just look really scary but you’re actually pretty nice??? and every time you come in you just buy a single flower and then you leave and that’s literally the only interaction we have for months until one night it’s super late when i close up and you pull up on a harley davidson and ask if i need a ride home??? uh sure thanks i guess??? and i get up the courage to ask you what you use the flowers for and turns out you use them as a reference when making flower tattoos that’s super cool tell me more (and gee whiz your helmet hair is really freaking hot wtf) au

anyway so nettie is officially a freelance artist (self-employed) and a nursery worker (employed part time at simply radishing). she’s been a freelance artist and supporting herself via art for nearly fifty years (her speciality is murals) but her job at the plant nursery is a more recent source of income. being part time, she only works there about 30h/week for $9/h.  either way, she’s got osteoarthritis so the skills she’s relied on for decades are gradually becoming more and more painful to stick with. she’ll be dead and buried before she admits that, though, and it doesn’t help that she doesn’t trust doctors or medicine to help her along.  (seriously, someone make her see a rheumatologist.)

WALTZ out of the womb knowing how to pronounce di . . . phen . . . hydra -- what? Excuse me. Excuse me.” She’s very concerned, eyebrows furrowed as she turns to the stranger beside her in line. Having already decided on this particular sleep aid ( something she’s already having a fit about . . . if ANNETTE ELIZA MORGAN is voluntarily purchasing medication over the counter, well, one simple cannot argue its significance ) the older woman is having second thoughts. And third thoughts. And seventeeth thoughts. There’s a rattle of the box in her hand alongside an exasperated sigh. She’s not asking the pharmacist. Annette does not trust pharmacists. “Hello, yes -- do you know anything about this?”

okay but don’t think about the fact leslie’s mom called him butterscotch before he announced his name was leslie because he’s hated his dead name since birth and even though she named him that she never took any offense and made sure his comfort was her top priority. and don’t think about her bringing him to goodwill to buy cute little dresses during the summer when he could wear them all day long because school wasn’t around to tell him he couldn’t – and that when he’d find one he really loved he’d wear it a whole week without changing no matter how dirty it got and probably cried when it ripped. don’t think about leslie stealing wigs to see how he’d look with long hair as a preteen because it was still cropped short at that time bc of school and then wearing one of those wigs to a school dance only to be made fun of constantly and told he had to take it off or leave because it was against the dress code ( he totally left – in tears and mad as hell ). also don’t think about leslie getting sent to the office because “MY NAME ISN’T CODY YOU ABSOLUTE FUCKING WALNUT” but then coming back to his locker the next day to see his dead name on sticky notes all over it in addition to other obscenities and DON’T THINK ABOUT ANNETTE ELIZA MORGAN MARCHING RIGHT INTO THAT PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE AND GIVING THAT OLD ASS MAN A STERN TALKING TO AND THREATENING TO SUE EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS NO MONEY BECAUSE “QUITE FRANKLY YOU’RE A MASSIVE FUCKING DICK AND I’D RATHER SEE YOU BEHIND BARS THAN IN CHARGE OF MY CHILD’S EDUCATION” okay just don’t think abt leslie in middle school ok don’t
