UNDERSTANDING SOUNDPROOF GLASS

WHAT IS SOUNDPROOF GLASS?

As the name suggests, soundproof glass is basically glass that won’t allow surround sound to pass through it, thus eliminating all the disturbing sound from outside and allowing complete peace. In more technical terms, soundproof glass is any glass that is manufactured by joining two layers of glass with an interlayer of polyvinyl Butyral or PVB in between them.

The interlayer of PVB is quite significant in the manufacture of soundproof glass as it is what bonds the glass sheets together and gives them a single-paned appearance. The most common type of glass that is used for soundproofing is laminated glass.

When soundproofing glass, it is first tempered and toughened to make it stronger and harder. This ensures that the glass doesn’t break easily. The standard thickness of a single unit of soundproof glass needs to be 12 mm. This 12 mm thickness will provide you with 20 dB of noise cancellation, thus making the glass a good quality soundproof glass.

There are usually two types of soundproof glass-

Double-glazing soundproof glass: It has both soundproofing and insulating qualities.

Laminated glass: It has both soundproofing and security properties.
