What is documentary fiction? This first year seminar centers around the practice of memoir and its relation to the curated persona of the artist, asking students to consider the way our culture fetishizes accountability and resists forgiveness. We will read a range of creative work representing memoirs as collections of fictions and mythologies, in turn resisting truth and bending genre. We will also examine the fragments of our own lives, anthems, and tenants. Giving ourselves permission to place ourselves slightly to the left of ourself, considering audience and found text; we will attempt to get closer to a collective truth.
