A displaced person is a voyeur... a walker... Nobody really knows where their roots are, what home is… Drop me in a desert, come back in a few days, and I will have already roots… deep into the sand…Â
Born in Tehran and having made his home in Minneapolis, historical and familial references abound in this artist's body of work that draws in equal measure from the arts and the sciences.
Written Minneapolis (The Last Tomb) is a crooked memory of my childhood and adolescence in Tehran, and later on after I came to Minneapolis. Empty spaces were filled with poetry that I had to memorize as a student…
My brain is filled with a lot of poetry, force-fed. That is how we communicated. Sometimes walking in the streets of Tehran we heard poetry being recited on the other side of the wall. In fact, poetry was the glue of all in our lives. Out in the city, poetry was arguments, political discourse, love and death, happiness, laughter, quiet weeping, misery, suffering, friction, bad-mouthing, praising and admiring. That was the whole life in the city.
I wrote them all down. I covered the whole 18 feet.
A poem: It seems like magic, and produces awe; but finding out it’s not magic only produces more awe.

Common Sans is a typeface that replaces the word 'refugee' with the word human. Being a refugee is a temporary status, being a human is permanent. Humans are amazing. A stamp on their passport should not let us believe otherwise.
Replacing language that’s dehumanizing in one way with language that’s dehumanizing in a different way.
“Artist Statement”, Aki Miyoshi
Croatia-born, Amsterdam-based artist Nora Turato: poetry + graphic design + performance. Kind of the polar opposite of the “flat-affect, distant-dissociated but very charged” language that’s so excited me about Robert Ashley & Arda Collins, and it doesn’t resonate in the same way, but—she makes it work. Fearlessness and commitment (and an extension of some Holzer-esque “hot language” inflammation?). I really like the cigarette-packet aesthetic too.
I found Nora through this Sandberg Instituut program on “Approaching Language.” My people!

The haute couture runway shows had an air of melancholy this year, but the poetry was in no way diminished.
“Poetry is haute couture.”
