🍃 Sunday, 19 February 2017PROUD NON CONFORMISTS When is the right time to start living for yourself? To truly express yourself without giving two hoots about the next person? In high school? NO! Too many rules. In varsity? Too much judgement. After that permanent placement at your dream job? Too many responsibilities, right! I say start living for yourself every single second you breathe in because after that moment is gone, you literally have no one else to hold accountable for any opportunity missed or moment not cherished. This is not one of those typical “Carpe Diem” posts, although it’s closely related. I am currently in a closed community where stereotypes are a leading factor in the blockage of a whole lot of potential from people. I take pride in the fact that I can sit back and observe my surroundings on stealth mode and, in so doing, I always find interesting things and even make up lists of my favourites. I have a massive interest in bold characters – you know, those people who do not conform to the status quo, those “I’m not here to please you” type of people. In a school where academics are taken seriously, like any other institution, I find myself disgusted by the misconception that intellectuals cannot have an ounce of style or the impulse to express themselves with what items they choose to put on or what foundation or lip colour to wear, or even the pair of kicks they choose to rock. Anyone who bothers to be different is automatically labelled a “snob” or one of those kids that try too hard – my question for all those saying this kind of rubbish is “when will you wake up and try” Why is it that people are so bothered by what other people do? I honestly can say I LOVE that lady who embraces her style, dresses her mood, conducts herself exactly how she wants because that is just who she is. The guy who hasn’t got time to blend in because not all of us are meant for the bland life. The COLOURFUL people who cast away the bad vibes and focus on BEING! I have the utmost respect for reserved people, I’m just trying to point out that whether I am a Jeans and T-shirt girl or a little black dress, maxi dress, dashiki, grunge shoes, stiletto or flip flop girl. My style should not be put up against my personality, Just like how wearing a mini skirt doesn’t automatically make one a prostitute. The day we all just quit comparing, rating and relating ourselves to other people, we could maybe find that individuality that we all just seem to lose track of the minute we’re exposed to other people. One thing I know for sure is that by the time we graduate and finally get jobs or whatever, there won’t be much time for self-discovery – even though we are constantly finding ourselves, we will be so focused on other things that we realize we wasted so much time trying to please other people and not ourselves, so the best time to be YOU is now. NO ARGUMENTS ABOUT IT and no excuses about what people will say. Pierce those ears, wear that turban,get that tattoo, colour?highlight those dreadlocks, wear those killer kicks, fleek those eyebrows up – express yourself if that’s who you are fam, because at the end of the day… it’s all for you and not about them. AUTHENTICITY IS MAGNETIC
