elijah-parrish:
“It’s okay,” he repeated. “It’s okay. It’s okay.” He couldn’t think of anything else to say. Words had never been his strong point, and what else was there when this was all his fault anyway? His fault that she was crying. His fault that he was sleeping in the guest room. His fault that they were even in this town. It was easier to admit that now, watching her fall apart under the weight of all he had placed on her. His fault. His fault.
His gut instinct told him that this was the time when he should get up and run - find some quiet place, and beat himself up until he wasn’t sad anymore and was angry instead. Let the armor build back so he could get up and do it all over again tomorrow. Survival instinct. But it was that same instinct that had gotten him - them - here in the first place, and he knew he had to fight it if he ever wanted to end this awful cycle. So instead, he squeezed Annie even tighter into his side, placing a kiss into her damp crown of hair.
“I’m sorry.” It was so quiet and muffled, he wasn’t even sure if he had heard it. He said it again, just to be sure. “I’m sorry.” The words were heavy as they rolled off his tongue, but the good kind of heavy, and he felt lighter afterwards. “Annie, I am so sorry.”
‘‘I just feel like I’m drowning, like everything is crumbling all around me and I’m struggling to stay afloat.’’ Annie admitted, for so long she’d been holding all these feelings in. Desperate not to add to his own troubles, she’d bottled up everything. But, somehow tonight everything was bubbling over, she’d finally reached her breaking point. ‘‘I know, I know.. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be piling all this on you.’‘
Annie let out a long sigh, wiping at her eyes with her hands. There was a part of her, however small, that doubted this. That doubted the closeness that they were having, she half expected him to close himself off and leave. Or that this whole ordeal would somehow turn itself into an argument. But then, he did something that she didn’t expect. He held her closer, and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
The last thing Annie had wanted was to make Elijah feel bad, and she hadn’t expected him to apologise to her of all reactions. ‘’Elijah, it’s okay.’’ Annie leant up so she was looking him in the eyes, and running a hand down the side of his face. ‘’I don’t think there’s anything that I couldn’t forgive, not when it comes to you.’’
graysonromero:
It was a chain reaction kind of thing, after seeing Annie smile Gray couldn’t help his own soft, barely there but still creeping through, smile. He wasn’t the kind of person who genuinely smiled a lot for people, but for those he was close to and cared about it was easy. Annie was one of those people – always had been, and considering she was in such a funk lately, the mere appearance of a smile was enough to settle his stomach. “Just looking out for you is all,” he drawled slowly, eyebrows raised as he kept his gaze on her until she leaned in for a hug, that he returned quickly with a tight squeeze of comfort. An ungraceful snort of sorts scoffed out at her words, shaking his head as he went to work on mixing a drink for her. “How ‘bout I give you one for starters then we’ll see how you feel about murdering nine more?” he questioned, though it was more of a statement as he finished up the drink and slid it across the bar to her, leaning on his elbows on the counter after, silence racking through the air for a few short moments before he spoke again, tentatively. “How are you?”
Seeing the smile on Gray’s face, her stomach settled slightly. Gray always had this way of calming Annie down, even on her darkest of days. She knew that no matter when she needed it, he would be there for her. The same went for him, she always wanted what was best for him and would be there for him whatever he needed. ‘’I know you are, but you could let me get totally wasted and just make sure I don’t die.’’ She scoffed as he wrapped his arms around her. ‘’Well then, you better make it a strong one then.’’ Annie said, taking a long sip of her drink. Leaning over the counter, raising an eyebrow at Gray as he spoke. ‘’Well I’m just dandy. My boyfriends sleeping in the spare room and I’m completely burned out at work. How’re you sunshine?’’
sierra-moore:
“You think I’m good with babies?” Sierra asked with a laugh, bouncing Mia up and down in her arms as she stepped inside to get the little girl out of the sun. “This is just a fluke and I don’t have any choice but to get along with her…” She wouldn’t go as far as to call herself a mom, but she was certainly more than your average godmother. First of all, most of them weren’t in a relationship with the child’s father and if they were, then at some point it would all blow up and neither of them would be in the baby’s life… Still, Sierra wasn’t into that kind of drama and with everything that had happened in the past few weeks, she was only looking to settle down into a more relaxed routine. “She likes peek-a-boo, you can do that right?” Anyone could get a kids attention with that game and as Sierra found her way into the living room and put the baby on her couch, the brunette sunk down next to her and immediately went to find some of the snacks she had tugged along with them. “OK, tell me—-” Pulling out two tubs, one with banana and the other with carrot puffs, she held them up and asked Annie to pick. “Carrot puff things, or tiny pieces of banana?”
Mia had her own ideas as she gurgled and reached out for the carrot puffs, deciding for herself exactly what she wanted. “Ah, don’t worry,” Sierra chuckled and pulled one out for her. “Looks like she’s already decided…” Part of her wondered if it wasn’t the food, but the brightly coloured packaging that always had her attention. She was one, not a genius toddler and at Mia’s age they were distracted easily by bright colours and interesting sounds. “How are you?” Sierra finally managed to ask, keeping an eye on the little girl who looked around the room as she sucked the carrot puffs. “I’m sorry it’s been so long…” The brunette sighed, hoping that everything was good. “We’ve only just unpacked everything from my apartment, got me settled in, it’s been a nightmare.”
Annie let out a soft chuckle at her friend. ‘’I mean you’re obviously going to be alot better than I am with babies. I think they all actively hate me, or maybe they can smell fear.’’ She knew how odd a situation it must be, what with Sierra being the little girls godmother, while being in a relationship with the father. She couldn’t even comprehend how it must feel to be in that situation. ‘’Well as an outsider looking in, you’re definitely doing a fantastic job with her, plus she really really seems to like you.’’ Annie smiled as Sierra placed Mia on the couch next to her, trying to hide the fear in her eyes. ‘’Peak-a-boo, right, peak-a-boo I can totally do that, I can handle that.’’ She stammered, before turning towards Mia and placing her hands over her eyes. ‘’Peak-a-boo, Mia.’’ Annie crooned at the toddler.
Letting out a curt laugh as Mia quickly turned her attention to the food, quickly settling on the carrot puffs. ‘’Looks like madam has already made her own mind up about her snacks.’’ She smiled, watching as the toddler sucked on the carrot puffs as she looked around the room. ‘’Me? Oh I’m just fine. Just the same y’know. Everything's a bit weird, but I feel like we’re starting to make progress? Even just a little bit?’’ Annie shrugged her shoulders, as she thought about her current situation with Elijah. ‘’Oh, no worries at all. I can totally get it, you’ve had a really busy time recently. I can imagine how much you’ve had to do!’’
elijah-parrish:
He hated seeing her like this. And for the first time in a long time, it felt like he was actually seeing her. Not the shades of her she purposefully set forth to project whatever defense mechanism she needed. Not so clouded by his own grief and anger he never really saw behind whatever sorrow he felt projected back at him. It sent a fresh stab of pain to his gut to realize this was the first time in over a year he’d been able to interact with her where didn’t seem entirely predicated on him getting in his own damn way and making it all about himself. His hurt. His loss. Maybe it was imagining something good and then watching it drift away before his mind’s eye, but for once he felt uniquely unselfish. Soft and gentle. Patient and kind.
When she tucked herself in beside him, he curled around her on instinct, resting his hand on her lower back as his thumb traced patterns between the two dimples at the base of her spine. The motion was second nature now, a habit he had developed early on in this relationship - when they’d snuggle on the couch watching TV, as they dozed in the afterglow of making love. A thought occurred in the back of his mind: still here. after everything, he still had this…
It was easy to allow himself to slip behind a bubble devoid of time; now that he’d stepped far enough back that it didn’t feel like everything was looming directly above him, he could ignore the way he still caught the occasional flash out of the corner of his eye. For tonight, he could just be Elijah, and she could just be Annie, and she needed him.
“Shhh,” he breathed calmingly. Her head on his chest, his cheek on her crown. “It’s okay. I’m here. I’m here. You don’t- you don’t have to explain anything. Just- it’s okay…”
For so long Annie had repressed this side of herself, hidden it away. Only allowed herself to truly breakdown when she was alone, afraid that she would only be adding to Elijah’s hurting by letting herself cry and feel around him. Annie just couldn’t do it, not anymore. She’d spent the longest time pretending like she was strong, putting up all these walls to try and protect herself from what ever fallout she assumed was inevitable. But, right now, she just needed Elijah. The way she used to need him, before all of the bullshit and the arguing and the hiding. She needed the person who knew her better than she knew herself.
Annie wrapped her arms tightly around Elijah, her hands grasping tightly to the fabric of his t-shirt. Burying her face into his chest, as if she could just hide from everything and transport herself back in time. As soon as his arm wrapped around her, she felt herself relax. She paced her breathing to the smooth patterns he was drawing at the bottom of her spine, happy memories flooding her mind. All the times they’d spent curled up just like this, over the years.
For the first time in a long time, Annie got a wave of an almost forgotten feeling; she felt at home. She felt safe, lying in the circle of Elijah’s arms, knowing that he wasn’t going to push her away or that something was going to happen that would rip them apart again. It felt like a massive weight of her chest, that she could let go of all her defences and just be Annie and let Elijah in.
Annie tightened her grasp on him as he spoke, scrunching her eyes up in some attempt to stop the tears falling from her eyes. ‘’I’m sorry, I just couldn’t take anymore... I can’t take anymore, I just can’t.. I’m so tired Elijah...’’ She whispered against his chest. ‘’I can’t take the fake smiles anymore, I don’t have the energy. I can’t keep pretending I’m okay, because I’m not.’’

A new text message lighting up his phone screen earlier in his shift at the bar had Grayson furrowing his eyebrows in mild confusion as he spied Annie’s name. After reading said message, an unsettling feeling had pooled in his stomach — she was one of his closest friends, and he couldn’t bare to see her in a state of sadness, so when she was going through something he was bound to do whatever he could to put a smile on her usual lively face. He did have a heart, dispite what most people claimed. As time wore on, his gaze quirked up the moment she stepped through the premesis and he made a beeline for her direction, grabbing an empty cup from a passed out patron along the way. “I hope you know that I’m not letting you get to the state of old chap over here–” he cut off, motioning to the passed out aformentioned guy, screwing his nose up and shaking his head in the process. He offered a small smile, tight-lipped and what he hoped was calming as he leaned over the bar, “let’s get you a drink, huh. What do you want?”
As much as Annie tried, she continued to struggle. No matter what she did to try and break herself out of her funk. Annie decided that filling all her spare time with different friends was probably a smart way to go, try to bury her problems and stop herself from getting into these lonely holes. Grayson always seemed to be a good choice, for helping her forget and making her laugh for a while. Plus he worked in a bar, and thus had a supply of booze that she could easily tap into to try and numb the pain. So, she headed to the bar. Sending her friend a quick text to let him know that she was on her way. Annie couldn’t help but smile upon seeing Grayson; ‘’Well there goes my plan to get completely paralytic.’’ She joked, pulling him into a hug. ‘’I could murder about ten gin and tonics right about now.’’
Things were odd, everything seemed to have gone static. Annie could see all her friends moving forward; and of course she was so happy to see them all getting all the things that made them happy. But there was a small part of herself that resented them, seeing them happy made her remember how much of a shambles her own relationship was in. Things were better, they were having actual conversations and talking things through, but it was still strained and he was still sleeping in the spare bedroom and she was sleeping alone. So when Sierra suggested meeting up for the day, Annie jumped at the chance to escape her endless cycle of feeling lonely and going to work. Annie smiled brightly when she saw Sierra approaching with Mia perched in her arms. ‘’Of course I don’t mind a third wheel, especially when they’re as cute as this little madam!’’ She smiled at Mia, waving at the baby. ‘’I’m sure we’ll survive, it’s a good thing I happen to love babies, not that I’m any good with childrenl.’’
elijah-parrish:
It hadn’t even been two years, but Elijah had discovered that each season brought it’s own distinct kind of melancholy. There was winter, with the holidays where he gathered together with the broken remnants of his family; spring, with the promise of new beginnings, and the anniversary of one awful end; summer, when everything was supposed to feel light, but it really just felt empty… It was coming up on his second fall, and Elijah didn’t think it had any right to hurt as much as it did.
He just kept thinking: Noah should be getting ready for his second year of college now. Elijah always imagined his little brother following in his footsteps and going to NYU. He’d be an English major, or maybe Art History, because of the two of them, Noah had always been the more creative one, and he would take his teenage angst and commit his pain to paper.
He could be moving into his dorm right now. Elijah and Annie would be helping him. Annie would go through the pains of making his bed, and organizing his desk, and Noah would collapse on the bed halfway through moving, claiming he was done for the day and they could just buzz off please. He would say it with a smile, though, and Elijah would roll his eyes and remind him that they were just a matter of blocks away as they left him to his peace.
… It was kind of a nice thought, actually, and Elijah smiled sadly despite himself.
It probably wasn’t healthy, the way he kept envisioning alternate futures, but lying alone on a lumpy futon, chasing sleep in a quiet room that wasn’t really his own could do that to a man. He’d heard Annie come home, heard her run the shower before making her way into their - her - bedroom. It felt right that this would be the kind of night they wouldn’t speak to each other; he felt raw and vulnerable in a way he couldn’t understand, that made him feel soft and desperate and infinitely safer tucked away on his own.
He hadn’t expected to hear a knock at his door, and though she didn’t wait for his confirmation, he wasn’t sure he would have denied her. And when he heard the tone of her voice, the whisper of unshed tears, his resolve crumbled completely. He didn’t even say a word - just scooched over on the mattress and lifted the corner of the blanket as a sign for her to crawl in next to him. It felt, for the first time in a long time, that they were on the same wavelength.
Seeing the spare room being inhabited, almost made her worse. Made her remember all the bullshit that had lead to Elijah sleeping in the spare room, all the fighting and crying and trying to make everything feel okay. Which just added to the drowning feeling that seemed to have formed in her chest. All the more reason why she needed to pretend, pretend that this was some other reality where everything had gone to plan, where everything had worked out for them and they weren’t fighting to stay afloat.
Annie wasn’t sure what she would have done if Elijah had denied her request, there was a small part of her that was sure that she would have crumbled on the spot. She knew herself that this probably wasn’t the kind of thing that was supposed to be allowed in their current situation, but she just needed someone to hold her. Someone to tell her that everything was going to be okay when it felt like everything was crumbling around her.
As soon as Elijah had lifted the edge of the blanket, she all but dived into the bed next to him. Curling up against his side, letting the tears fall from her eyes as she breathed in the comforting smell of Elijah. He’d been her rock for so many years, this was her reaction to anything. To lean on Elijah, even now that they were so broken she couldn’t help herself.
Annie wrapped an arm around his waist, pulling herself closer to him. Trying to stop herself from crying, just long enough to try and explain what was wrong with her. ‘’I couldn’t take being alone tonight...’’ She managed to choke out. ‘’I really hate being alone...’’ Annie admitted, rubbing at her eyes with her hands. ‘’I’m sorry..’’
sierra-moore:
“I can tell—-” The brunette tried to relieve the mood with a wink and small smile, going nowhere near as far as she had hoped. Adam was a good man and when they were more stable, telling her was going to be an honour. Right now though, it was about her relationship with Elijah. Forever on the edge of being perfect or completely ruined, a balance that never seemed to tip either way; it had been months of up’s and down’s unlike most couple ever had to weather. “Thank you, I think you’ll like him…” She would have suggested a double date if things were better between them, so for now she kept quiet and silently wished for a conclusion to their dramas. Sierra listened and nodded slowly, reminding herself that this wasn’t a professional conversation. All Annie needed was a friend and being anything else wouldn’t be appropriate for either of them, “Sometimes you have to let them realise it…” Therapists weren’t there to trick anyone into spilling their secrets, but their willingness to listen and offer new forms of help had even the strongest people crumbling. It might take six months, but eventually they would get to a place of trust and leave able to heal. “That’s good though, you can’t help someone who doesn’t want help. Go as a couple and as lone patients, I know a lot of people who do that.” She suggested, waving her hand in the air as an apology for her previous comments. “Step back, sorry. I just don’t want you to think that I won’t go out of the way, you know?” Her voice was calm and soothing, hand lifting the glass of wine to her mouth. “Just take it slow… One step at a time, don’t pressure yourselves into anything. See what happens, give it time.” Swallowing the mouthful of wine, she sat back and chewed on her bottom lip. “You’re just going for the weekend? Well, maybe I can come over when you’re back. Make you food or something…”
Annie smiled at her friend, she loved seeing her like this. She could remember what it was like to be at the start of something, the feeling of excitement of the unknown. ‘’Of course I’ll like him, anyone who’s good enough for you. Is certainly good enough for me.’’ Annie, said a bright smile evident on her face. ‘’I can’t wait to meet him, when you’re both ready.’’ There was a bittersweet feeling about the whole thing, of course she was astoundingly happy for Sierra, she wanted her friend to have all the happiness possible. But with everything falling apart in her own relationship, seeing someone else so happy made her yearn for that feeling herself, which is why the idea of therapy was her little glimmer of hope. She’d been fighting to get Elijah to go for a year, and getting him to agree felt like a little victory. ‘’I know, I think we’re just going to take each day as it comes? We’re going to try the whole therapy thing, and if it works then it works, but if it doesn’t then at least we’ve tried to save it?’’ Annie gave a soft shrug. She was trying to remain optimistic, but her resolve about it all was dwindling at best. Annie let out a soft sigh as Sierra apologised; ‘’I know you would, but I don’t want to be a burden to anyone..’’ She admitted, looking down at her hands for a minute. ‘’Yeah, just for the weekend, I have to work and it’s kinda hard to travel from the Hamptons?’’ She explained, before smiling brightly at Sierra. ‘’You should, I’d really like that!’’
@elijah-parrish
There wasn’t often a time where Annie could say that she hated her job, but today was one of those days. She’d arrived to work, and the place was already jumping, there had been an accident and the ER was filled with people with various injuries. It was horrific, normally this sort of thing didn’t bother Annie. It was all part of the job, you got on with it and that was that. But she’d been so emotional recently, what with everything going on at home, the littlest things were getting to her. At the end of her shift she had dealt with far too many traumas for one day, she’d lost two patients and she’d had to stick on a brave face and fake smile for the remainder of her day; she was emotionally and physically exhausted.
Normally she’d take the bus, but decided she needed the fresh air; so walked back to the flat she shared with Elijah. Everything at home was so weird, she wanted to time travel back to when she felt comfortable enough to come home, cuddle up to her boyfriend and have a good cry. But, she wasn’t even sure if she could do that anymore.
On arrival home, it appeared that Elijah was already in bed . Or just hanging out in the spare room, either way the living room was empty. Annie made a bee-line for the shower, in an attempt to scrub the bad day off of her. Finally letting herself cry the tears she’d been holding in all day, letting the water carry them down the drain. On entering their empty bedroom, it made her feel ten times worse. It made her feel empty. The last thing she wanted to be tonight, was alone.
Moving quickly before common sense took over, she quickly pulled on her pyjamas and made her way through to the spare room. Knocking softly on the door, before entering slowly, closing the door behind her.
‘‘I’m sorry if this is weird, or breaking the rules or whatever. But can we pretend that we’re not taking a step back? Just for a minute?’‘ Annie asked, her bottom lip starting to wobble as tears threatened to spill over again. ‘‘Because I could really really use a cuddle..’‘
sierra-moore:
“If he ever misses a date, I will give you his address and you can unleash hell—” She chuckled, despite the rest of their conversation going down a darker path. This wasn’t about her and she didn’t want it to be either; honest conversations were hard, but when it came to Annie and Elijah they were almost impossible. Getting her to open up was difficult, so whenever she did it voluntarily Sierra was never going to turn her back. “Don’t you see how much help he needs?” The woman asked quietly, breathing out slowly as she tried to find the words. “His suffering is yours, but the burden of Noah shouldn’t be on your relationship. You’re a team, Annie. And both of you need more help than any you’re getting…” She knew little of their dealings with counsellors, but by the sounds of the situation, it wasn’t helping. “You have to do what you have do Annie, but… Breaks aren’t good if they’re not real. Moving into the spare room isn’t going to help. One of you needs to go somewhere else for a while, a month, maybe two?” She suggested, swallowing hard. “You can come here for a few weeks, take my bed. I’ll stay on the couch, I don’t mind.”
‘‘You better hope he never does, because I’m in a ass-whooping mood as of late!’‘ Annie gave Sierra a stern look. ‘’But, honestly love. I’m so happy for you, you’re going to have so many good things come your way and Im glad you’ve found someone to go on adventures and share you life with.’‘ Annie smiled brightly at Sierra, pouring them two more glasses, from the bottle sitting on the table and letting out a sigh. ‘’I see that, I know that he needs more help. I’ve tried as best as I can. But I’m not a therapist..’’ She shrugged her shoulders. ‘’But I think he see’s it now? He see’s how far gone we are, we’re going to try going to therapy. Whether it be together or separately, but I think we need something, a way of getting all these feelings out. ‘’ Annie explained, trying to keep her voice even as she spoke about the situation. ‘’It’s not a break-up Sierra. It’s a step-back. We’re still together, we’re just not pushing it anymore. We’re giving ourselves time and space to heal. I’m not leaving the apartment, I hate moving.’’ Annie let out an exasperated sigh. ‘’Sierra, I don’t want to put you out, I’m going to my dads for the weekend. I don’t want too much change all at once.’’
elijah-parrish:
Elijah hadn’t been sure if the gesture was too romantic - winning a stuffed bear for your girl was the kind of cliche that popped up in nearly every cheesy romantic comedy - but the minute he watched her face light up, he knew that he’d made the right choice. He couldn’t even remember the last time he’d seen her smile - at him, especially - and something about that mixed with the energy of the festival had him feeling soft and warm in a way he hadn’t in a long time. “It- it really isn’t that big of a deal,” he shrugged shyly. “I’m just glad you like it. I thought you might…”
Everything had been to odd the last while, that a simple gesture of winning a bear at a festival made Annie’s heart swell a little. It was the kind of things that normal couples did, that they might have done all those years ago when they first began. ‘’It’s definitely a big deal!’’ She smiled brightly, leaning forward to press a soft kiss to his cheek. ‘’It’s an even sweeter gesture!’’ Annie gave him a soft smile. ‘’Do you reckon calling him Bjorn, like from Abba, is a little too weird?’’ Annie asked, cocking an eyebrow in Elijah’s direction.
anthonyjwilliams:
“That is really true.” Anthony replied, sending her a small nod. He knew enough about Annie’s history to know that Annie’s step-father was important for her. “Okay, then it is settled. I am sure my mom is going to be incredibly happy to see you. Although, I am sure that you’ll have to answer a million questions.”
‘‘Plus with all the chaos of the festival, it’ll be nice to get out of the town for a day.’‘ Annie let out a chuckle. ‘‘As much as I love the atmosphere in the town just now, it’ll be nice to escape it for a while. I’m incredibly happy to see her, and I’m more than happy to answer all the questions.’‘

This fair was proving to be a problem rather than a fun summer time activity. He was way too close to an endless tap of cheap beer and the party atmosphere. Leaving him unable to sleep at night when all he heard was Lanford residents having the time of their lives right outside his window.
He was on his third beer, just the beginning compared to the amount he planned on knocking back tonight. He couldn’t help but laugh at the already tipsy person next to him. He turned to her and scooted himself closer on the bench. “With me, darling. Nine out of ten times, the answer is alcohol.”
Annie let out a laugh at her companions reply. ‘’Well then sweetie, you’ve come to exactly the right place, because I intend of keeping the beers flowing all night.’ She chuckled, running a hand through her hair as she took another long sip on her beer. ‘’How’re you doing anyway? Enjoying the festivities?’’

It had taken him more time than he cared to admit, and it seemed pitifully small in comparison to the one he’d originally set his sights on, but he’d finally won something at those stupid carnival games. “Here,” he said, handing over the stuffed bear with an awkward smile. “I, uh- this is for you.” He hadn’t really known how to act since their new arrangement, but he was trying. “Is this okay?” he asked.
The festival was really something, the atmosphere was electric. Annie loved events like this, where you could see the whole community coming together and enjoying themselves. Turning towards Elijah’s voice, she couldn’t contain the smile that formed on her face at the stuffed bear that he had presented her. ‘’Really? For me? This is so sweet!’’ She exclaimed excitedly as she took the bear, hugging it tightly. ‘’Of course! Obviously, I’ll need to come up with a name for him though!’’
