      hawkins appeared to be the picturesque town:  a quiet, safe place to pop out two and a half children, adopt a yellow lab, and silently judge your neighbors from within the confines of your white picket fence. the only thing that seemed to differentiate it from neptune,  other than the obvious lack of ocean access,  was the fact that it actually seemed to have a middle class.  while that may have lessened the likelihood of an all-out war against the have’s and have not’s,  it apparently did nothing in the way of keeping bored housewives from cheating on their husbands.

        so,  that’s where keith mars decided to set up shop.  disgraced,  fired,  and practically ran out of town against his own volition,  he’d told veronica that they needed a fresh start far away from neptune,  california,  and the west coast in general.  although she was leaving behind broken bonds and the memories she once held dear,  she didn’t particularly mind.  getting out of neptune had been a dream of hers for what felt like a lifetime.  at least,  since lilly’s murder took place.

        though it may not have been the number one destination on her list,  veronica welcomed the move to hawkins and her dad’s plan to establish himself there as a private detective.  and that’s how she found herself in starcourt mall,  a walkman in her pocket and a notebook in her hand,  all in an attempt to help her father with the latest case he took.  as it turned out,  following young trophy wives as they flounced from store to store wasn’t as interesting as one would lead you to believe.  tired,  hungry  and in desperate need of a sugar fix,  she wandered to the one place she hadn’t noticed her mark even take a peep at:  scoops ahoy.

          “so...”  she begins as she takes her place at the counter, palms resting on the surface.  “what’s the biggest sundae you’ve got here?  i’m talking cherries,  whipped cream,  syrup,  the works.  this is,  like,  a chocolate emergency.”
