Forewarning that this post is very rambely and train of thought, but TL:DR i talk about my thoughts about Genuinely Frustrated Dottore faltering from his usual demeanor in the second half of his Nod Krai bossfight + his mocking comment in Irmunsul, and also touch on some ideas of 'why' & also come to a conclusion about dottore's need for a sense of control.

Ill admit that I did watch the Nod Krai archon quest REALLY late, but it surprises me how I saw pretty much No one talking about how funny Dottore's audiable switch up in demeanor in the second phase of his fight was.LMAO I really like seeing a look at Genuinely Frustrated Dottore. like I guess it's not 'funny' in the typical way, but I greatly enjoy any moments where his flickers of humanity show underneath his whole Condescending Arrogant Scholar God demeanor and. like??? His voice sounds AUDIABLY different LMAOO I don't like focusing too much on voice cadences for lines because it can vary by dub, but at least in eng, he like. loses his usual languidity in favor of like, genuine anger and frustration. He actually talks faster, like at a normal speed instead of his usual drawl? And he sounds more present. I think his voice actually pitches a bit lower(?). More rough????? Idk, but to me, it's kind of like the difference between the softer tones of some of Wanderer's lines versus the harsher tones of some others. (Like compare Wanderer's elemental burst lines with any of his others where he's being more 'genuine' lmao (not that his "Cry louder!" and "Know your place!!" insticts AREN'T genuine but. it's also a specific projection that he leaned into as Scaramouche?? So I think Dottore's genuine frustration being so out of his usual demeanor makes his vocal differences comparable to the difference of Wanderer's softness being at odds with his Scaramouche style aggression.) im also saying this because i want to look back on dottore's playable voice overs one day and notice the difference LMAO. This is also part of my 'Dottore (omega specifically) is like ALWAYS being dramatic and his vocal cadence is part of that' agenda. so it's funny and satisfying to see things outside of that act lmao

Anyway though Dottore's stupid little "''Time for me to die'??? Hahaha!" Line gives me the same 'clearly NOT his usual demeanor' thrill. it's SOO funny to me it's my absolute favroite LMAOO bcz it's like. SO Earnestly mocking??? Dottore's usual style is condescending or smug. Repeating a sentence in equal parts genuine glee And in a tone like that is a Variation from that norm, and not performative, I think. (I think it's because he literally just felt SO superior to Wanderer in that moment. Since he knew he already had power/sway over Wanderer (dottore knows he's the source of his trauma), and Dottore's next sentence was about not caring about dying (which renders Wanderer's threat useless and theoretically futile and embarrassing for even making it), I think that he just got Such a giddy thrill from being above Wanderer he couldn't help himself LMAO. PLUS it was a personal thing. Dottore gets immideatly nasty the second interpersonal things come up). ((Also I think Dottore's mimicry of the Musou no Hitotashi was also possibly a personalized attack for Wanderer too btw. but that's a side thing.))

Also, another conclusion I'll have to look back to study on b4 making a full thing about it, but like Every time Dottore loses his Formal Scholar demeanor he Immediately gets personal and nasty. Both moments I talked about, like the archon quest after Columbina interrupts (when he starts mocking them for relying on each other in a way that meant they were below him), and then the whole "'Time to die'? Hahaha!" Moment was fueled by a need to/glee about regaining a sense of control. He needs to feel above others to feel comfortable I think

You know, I feel like arguably a possible avenune of Dottore characterization (that is really optional & up to interpretation, of course. Also arguably MOST applicable to omega specifically), is that, as far as I can tell, he's like.. genuinely really dramatic? LMAO?? but there's so much he does that's Just for the sake of drama. His overdramatic poses as Dr. Data. His dramatic entrance in the Sumeru story quest that, mind you, he specifically orchestrated. He literally puts effort into setting a Tone every time you see him???? & Like, (I haven't done the Nod Krai quest I've only seen out of context stuff so I can't speak much on that), but for the recent Sumeru quest.. IDK, it was probably just intended for flashback stuff for storytelling in game, but Dottore literally summoned facsimiles of Wanderer's old friends behind him, and then cinematically cast them off the ledge, AND put Wanderer back in Scaramouche outfit for literally like half a scene JUST to be Dramatic. Dottore said outright he didn't even want to return Wanderer's old life to the current day& Wanderer was right back to his usual outfit a second later. The ONLY reason Dottore did that was to be dramatic. And all this ties to his whole "im a Villain I'm a monster" internal thing obviously, but even calling yourself a 'demon that [you] could never have hoped to beat' (to Niwa when Niwa was dying) is SOOO?? Like??? That's COMICALLY dramatic dude. I'm sorry I keep saying dramatic but it IS idk how else to describe it.

Theres obviously an aspect of how deeply he believes it & has SO deeply internalized and as such perpetuates his own osctraization, but if you just think past that for a second, it's SO OBJECTIBELY DRAMATIC. ITS SO FUNNY. And again, I guess a lot of it is glossed over because it's Genshin and anime characters are just cool and stuff & it's kind of expected that antagonists are like that. But if we think about it as an active choice on Dottore's part, which I guess technically it is..??? Again, Omega consistently seems to put effort into creating a Tone every time we see him. He's the one who chose to do all those cunty extra movement flairs in both boss fights. And, like, we don't have many examples of the other segments talking, but we Know Omega talks with SUCH a dramatic drawl??????? Kind of????? He has a VERY specific cadence compared to the other segmengs I think. It's soo. Omega/Zandik/Dottore has been alive for 400 dramatic, dramatic years.

BITCH???? with every other boss we go to them and interrupt their thing, but he came to where the traveler was just to show off his new fit and split the sky. even in irminsul when it's us going to him, he still shows up after the main actors enter the stage, we didn't interrupt him, he was waiting for us.

his whole thing is being extra and setting up a scene, he always does that it's just how everyone knows him now, scara said so when we entered irminsul, even in columbina's trailer for example, whether it's interpreted as him by the "director" or how columbina sees him, it is him who sets the scene, he's playing the music while everything is happening around him. columbina, the actors, the entire play even the space itself moves to his rhythm (and i believe he is the director but that's besides the point)

every single one of his plans involves so much set up behind the scenes, like staging a play, a nod-krai spoiler but the way he set up the "variables" to be in his favor of becoming the moon god, BRO ALTERED TIMELINES like what?? in his conversation with the traveler he started with "do you like this venue, maybe we should go here" bro just do your evil monolog already lol

The first 50 years of Zandik and Feofan's honeymoon were especially hard for other segments.

uhm. Would anyone be interested in a fic of Pantalone getting to know/winning over 25..... I just started working on it but.i have thoughts on them.its interesting to me that 25 would be the oldest version of Dottore that hadnt had Pantalone's companionship in his life (& as such, also the oldest segment age that Pantalone had never personally seen the original at. I think that alone would deeply interest Pantalone.) Also, in my mind, 25 would be the second ever segment made (after 35 being made first) so it'd be Pantalone's first ever look at a younger Dottore at all in that case.

& just ranting about 25 here: I think 25 is also arguably one of the more 'despondent' segments in a sense (in as 'despondent' as Dottore can openly be(?)).I mean, he's presumably spent enough time with the Fatui that he's settled in a bit, so he's had more time with the freedom (isolation) of being left completely alone and autonomous in his research, and with more time distancing him from the Sumeru era of his life, and yet with NO time having a Pantalone force in his life. Aside from subordinates and like, MAYBE Pierro??, his life is literally 100% expirements and no one actually close to him. While do I think he's still somewhat quippy and communicative (shoutout to the unprompted "I hope they're in HR" from the tree marrow and also him just talking a fair amount iirc,) at this point he's had no one close in his life & he has NO reason to assume that there will ever be anyone. And 25 is the last segment of Dottore who still lives with that belief completely unshaken (not to say that Zandik ever believed that he WASNT alone post Pantalone, since that man has Issues., but at least segments 35+ had that connection to analyze) & 25 has no precedent to assume that this permanant distance is anything but How Life Will Forever Be For Him. There's no point in wasting energy trying to breech the gap when people only despise him. (I mean don't get me wrong, he's not some tired defeatist little meow meow with observable depression or something (he's still smug and self assured in the way Omega is, and I think he's also still prickly and irritable like 18, even if he's more careful and repressed about it) But he's cold & used to the cold in turn I think)

And then. 25 year old Zandik wakes up as a segment, and he's in a new lab and there's two other versions of himself there (OG Zandik and Omega). and he learns he's a segment (which, okay, interesting. 25 sees the logic and he approves) but also, there's obviously been some changes since he was around. Like Pantalone. APPARENTLY he was originally a test subject, then subordinate (already 25 is deeply suspicious how any version of himself could be talked into sparing a test subject, much less by the subject themself. Hes very doubtful) and now apparently he's a harbinger and the one he has to go to for funding (????!?!?????). He's also close business partners with Dottore, reportedly has shared goals (??????), and both versions of himself vouches for this random stranger. 25 remains unconvinced and his doubtful suspicion of Pantalone continues even after he meets the man. However . Pantalone is too curious to give up and is still as intrigued by this version of Dottore as he is the others. (And yes obviously 25 soon understands why all his other versions are so fixated on this guy) (And I have thoughts on Pantalone's thoughts and observations about 25 (and how that fits into Pantalone's view of Zandik and also how it affects their relationship) too, but that's also what the fic will explore hopefully!!!!)
