In D/s relationships (or any relationship, for that matter), I believe that positive reinforcement is an important thing.

Submissives can benefit from encouragement and reminders that they are exhibiting good behavior. Hearing that kind of feedback generally makes the submissive more comfortable and relaxed in their service. It is important to point out the good behavior to balance out whatever discipline and correction is being given. We often here phrases like “good girl/boy,” but being more specific and saying something like, “It pleases me that you always remember to call me the same time of day without my asking,” or “Wow, you always dress up so nice for your Owner,” can make a stronger impact.

I also believe that Doms can benefit from positive reinforcement, as well. Although many people think Doms are all-knowing, they are people too. As much as the sub is finding their way, so is the Dominant. Both parties are doing their best to find balance and synchronicity so reminders to the Dominant are just as beneficial. A sub saying, “I love when you give me advice about xyz,” or “It’s great when you remind me of my place. It really helps me focus,” are some examples of ways to do that.
