During a 1963 demonstration, "Miss American 1962" winner Maria B. Fletcher takes aim holding a prototype of Colt's new AR-15 rifle. Similar design to the M-16 this version lacks fully automatic capability. Maria B. Fletcher was tasked in a promotional event to fire the rifle at Colt's testing range. She was given several different models to fire and from the records stated she could shoot. Even though she was not dressed for the rifle range, she stated the rifle was easy to shoot. Maria was formerly "Miss North Carolina" with her hometown of Asheville, a graduate from Vanderbilt University, she would later marry and have two children.
