January. You couldn’t think of the year anymore, the war had been raging and ravaging for so long that to think of the year, to try and put it into numbers how long you had been fighting, was little more than a void that would suck you in and make you forget all about fighting; thoughts like that often made soldiers think twice about what they were told to fight for. The truces did the same, the truces made soldiers reluctant to kill one another, after realising that the so-called enemy was little more than another human, it made soldiers stop and think twice. Not you. You weren’t given such a luxury like that; the closest you ever got to that so-called enemy was when you watched them hurtle to the ground in a ball of flame and smoke. The Captain, Manfred, he told you to just keep going, he told you not to think; don’t think about them, don’t think about the friends you watched die, don’t fucking think about any of them. Do not fucking think; you can scream, you can shout, you can cry, just don’t fucking think.
