Another week another cocktail (I’m going to start posting my Friday night ones the following day as I always forget on Friday’s). The Mojito. A tricky one for me. I’ve made it in the past trying different ratios of sugar, rum and lime juice and never quite got it right. I used Steve the Bartenders YouTube channel for this one, which uses the original recipe from the birth of the mojito at La bodeguita de medio in Cuba. It is a refreshing drink but there is something unsatisfying about it too. The mint overtakes most of the drink making it seem a little like mint, sugary water. However maybe I am a philistine when it comes to Mojitos and I still need to find the recipe that works for me. A few people have suggested flavoured ones which I think may suit me better. I present the Enzoni (I made this yesterday) . A more modern cocktail this week. Courtesy of the recipe by @stevethebartender on his YouTube channel. I have never used grapes before in a cocktail but I have to say this is one of the most refreshing cocktails I have ever had. Had a bit of a disaster with the ice but A friend kindly bought me some snazzy ice trays, so can use these next week. Grapes, gin, lemon, sugar syrup and Campari. I’m the bustle of the weekend I completely forgot to post my cocktail of the week from Friday. So here goes! The Manhattan. The one that changed everything. The father of the Martinez and grandfather of the Martini. The founder of all french-Italian cocktails. Gary Regan reckons it is the finest cocktail on earth and I’m actually inclined to agree. Certainly my favourite so far! The first time I have used Angostura Bitters but I’m not so fancy yet as to own cocktail sticks (I must get some as I missed the maraschino cherry garnish). There’s something about this cocktail that is very warming, almost honey like. Cocktail of the week: Mary Pickford. I have to say this is a lesser known cocktail and easily one of my favourites. Pineapple juice, grenadine, rum and maraschino liqueur means this is sweet but not overly so. This is classed as the international sour and I can say this seems to be a type of cocktail I enjoy. Another week, another cocktail. This week the Hemingway Daiquiri, or Hemingway Special as it is better known. Turns out this cocktail doesn’t have too much to do with Ernest Hemingway, my all time favourite writer. Brutish, wild, macho and seeking truth. This cocktail doesn’t disappoint. The grapefruit juice is bitter but matched with the sweetness of the maraschino liqueur. Another week another cocktail. The first non alcoholic one I have done so far. The Virgin Mary, the same as the Bloody Mary with the exclusion of the vodka. I used Gary Tegan’s book for the recipe, tomato juice, hot sauce, horseradish, lemon, pepper, salt and Worcestershire sauce. I didn’t add too much tobasco to mine and the recipe says to taste anyway. I also could have added celery salts which have a slightly different flavour. I like this drink, I don’t love it and couldn’t have it every day. But maybe with a special breakfast it would be a lovely addition. I think it is a cocktail that divides people though, although probably less with the inclusion of the vodka. But I have to say I enjoyed it. Another week another cocktail. The Aviation. Introduced to me by my best friend @sarahjholding a few years ago in a classy cocktail joint. However, the best one I ever had was the one that was made @bcdnq . Not on the menu but they made it anyway. But alas, here is my version. I used Gary Tegan’s recipe in ‘Joys of Mixology’ but amended it slightly. Rather than 1/4 ounce of maraschino liqueur I add a bit extra. I also added a maraschino cherry for added sweetness. The kind of cocktail that takes your breath away on the first sip but becomes easy drinking. One of my favourites purely because I love anything violet tasting and this has violet liqueur as an ingredient. Yesterday was good day. Went to Stretford meadows and ended up right back where I started at Sale Water Park. Extremely sunny and not a cloud in the sky (we did see the moon though). Even managed to transport an Aviation in the sun 🍸 though I need to work on my al fresco cocktail game. Not even remotely tired of picnic food yet (except scotch eggs, I don’t like those). So another , another cocktail. This week is one of my personal favs, The White Russian. A quick one to make for sure. Recipe comes from Gary Tegan’s ‘Joys of Mixology’ book. According to him someone added milk to the Black Russian in the sixties and this drink was born. His version uses single cream rather than milk which makes this even more luxurious. Obviously this cocktail is also popular because Jeff Bridges sunk eight of these during the course of the Big Lebowski (one of my fav films). So here’s to The Dude! So belated cocktail of the week, as I made this yesterday! This is Negroni, a controversial one for many. I had a lot of people ask me why I was making this particular one as it seems to divide folk. I must admit when I have had this before it’a always been before the start of a meal and bitter as hell. I must say though I was pleasantly surprised and this will go on my list as one of the favourites. Bitter, zesty and I do declare a saltiness to it that it lovely. It feels like an aperitif to be savoured , because it is. Slight deviation from cocktail of the week. But a recipe recommended to me by @electrastongue. A Tommy’s on the Rocks. A version of a Margarita I suppose with tequila, lime and agave nectar. But the taste was quite different and I would say a lot zingier! Might actually prefer this my beloved Margarita! Today I ventured out properly for the first time in ages. Taking my exercise as a long walk rather than daily HIIT. Went to Sale Water Park and having found a shortcut realised it is less than 20 mins walk from my house 🚀. Being outside like this instantly improved my mood 1000%. Anyway was fairly quiet so managed to stay safe whilst out and about. Saw some lovely flowers too. Realised a lot of dogs don’t see you coming unless they are right in front of you. Ah the Caiprinha. Some call it the Brazilian Mojito. So I initially struggled to get the top off the Cachaça which was not a good start. I used the Esquire recipe and added soda water (gasp!) as I was having one of these before 7 o’clock. Apparently the national drink of Brazil and I can see why. So my actual cocktail of the week this week is a Tom Collins which will follow. But most months I have a bash at Margaritas so it seems fitting to make one on such a sunny day. One of the most refreshing cocktails in my opinion. I used the recipe on my cocktail shaker for this one (shock, horror!) although if I ever get a strainer I’ll use a Jamie Oliver’s one (he suggests double straining). I also added a bit of Rosie’s lime cordial because I ran slightly out of fresh lime juice (gasp!). An amateur mistake but ah well. I’m divided about the salt rim which I haven’t tried before.
