9TH FEB - THE ART OF FREELANCING
aI recently went to an all day lecture I signed up for about ‘The Art Of Freelance’. The day consisted of a few lectures within different areas of freelancing. Isla Wilson was the first to share her wisdom. Isla is a business consultant and has worked closely with some of the biggest names in the business: Virgin, Volkswagen, Balfour Beatty, Enterprise, Nokia to name just a few. She shared her Top Tips for starting your own business.
1. Don’t buy into the struggling artist myth.
2. The person who runs it (Me).
3. Strategy Vs Operational.
4. Make friends with Tech.
Elaine Simons was the next speaker she shared some really interesting thoughts about Effective networking for creative opportunities. She mentioned the 3 Pillars: Meet, Like, Trust. I made a few notes of some interesting thoughts she mentioned.
1. Wear your badge on the right-hand side. Apparently this allows whoever your meeting to remember your name. As you put your right hand out to greet someone your eyes will naturally glance upwards. Another way to be remembered and to remember people is to repeat your name when you greet like James Bond does. Anthony, Anthony Sutton.
2. Opening questions. Who,What,Why,Where,How?
Elaine mentioned how isolated we are these days. We are to involve in our phones and the internet instead of being human beings and actually meeting and talking to people. I totally agree and have noticed this within myself and others. This is something I need to address.
3. Go with a friend. Going with a friend can have it’s Advantages and Disadvantages. You have the comfort of having someone you know to talk to but you can become defensive and end up only talking to them
- Go early so that people are coming to you first
- If you’re talking to your friend open your body up to allow for others to enter the conversation.
- Single out people that are on their own.
- If you make a commitment to someone for example; you arranged to meet them for coffee or a phone call. Make a note of the time and place you said and stick to it.
