The hard truth about autism acceptance that a lot of people don't want to hear is that autism acceptance also inherently requires acceptance of people who are just weird.

And yes, I mean Those TM people. Middle schoolers who growl and bark and naruto run in the halls. Thirtysomethings who live with their parents. Furries. Fourteen-year-olds who identify as stargender and use neopronouns. Picky eaters. Adults in fandoms. People who talk weird. People who dress weird.

Because autistic people shouldn't have to disclose a medical diagnosis to you to avoid being mocked and ostracized for stuff that, at absolute worst, is annoying. Ruthlessly deriding people for this stuff then tacking on a "oh, but it's okay if they're autistic" does absolutely nothing to help autistic people! Especially when undiagnosed autistic people exist.

Like it or not, if you want to be an ally to autistic people, you're going to have to take the L and leave eccentric, weird people alone. Even if you don't know them to be autistic. You shouldn't be looking for Acceptable Reasons to be mean to people in the first place. Being respectful should be the default.

Heyyy, we don't normally respond to garbage like this, but I do think this is a good opportunity to clarify why we don't want to interact with "cringe centered" blogs.

"Cringe culture" is garbage. It just is. Its bullying, mocking, and harassing people having fun or existing as themselves that ARE NOT affecting you.

Cringe culture also disproportionally affects autistic people and people with other neurodiversities, or disabilities in general. Anyone who acts "different" is a target and I think that is fucking bullshit! Cringe culture is inherently ableist!

If you have an entire blog dedicated to making fun of people harmlessly having fun or JUST EXISTING that again, are not affecting you in the slightest, I think you're a massive piece of shit and no, we do not want you in the safe space we are curating on this blog. So no. We do not want cringe centered blogs engaging with our content.

As we can see, people who engage in cringe culture are just plain mean. They're mean! Bullies if you will!

Do whatever you want forever, cringe culture is garbage and doesn't deserve to be catered to.

Hi! I've only recently learnt about therianthropy (relatively new to Tumblr) and while I find the subculture fascinating and pretty cool in lots of aspects, I feel like there's some bits which I get really defensive about. One of them being people taking the subculture as a hard metaphysical truth, and every time I hear that I think like, ok, but your kintype is almost always cool animals, like wolves or cats or foxes, never something more obscure like a grouse or a wobbegong or a damselfly. I'm all for expressing this animalistic wild side of oneself through this subculture, but given how heavily influenced by human culture and preference this is, I can't take claims of spiritual energy seriously.

You're incorrect about your base assumption that it's always "cool" animals. You think that because you're new. I've known several cows. An earwig. A prehistoric shrimp. A parrot. For a start.

Now, you say you can't take our claims seriously. I don't particularly care whether or not you take us seriously. It's rude to seek someone out just to tell them you don't share their spiritual beliefs. You don't have to agree, but you do have to be respectful of other people's beliefs. Ours is no different from anyone else's.

I know you already answered an ask about kinning outside of your own culture, but I haven’t been able to find much about this aspect specifically: is it okay to call yourself your kin’s name if they’re a different culture from you? To put it in terms of your answer to the other ask, is it appropriation to, for example, call myself a Japanese character’s name if I’m Chinese? Is it appropriation to ask to be addressed by that name while in kin shift?

I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all. What's important is just being sensitive toward the originating culture and doing your best to understand.

I'm glad everyone is having a good time with this "catgirl hacks the TSA" thing. You do realize therianthropy will never be taken seriously now, and any progress we've made toward making otherkinity "acceptable" to the human public is obliterated. Therianthropy will forever be a meme or a joke because of this. Hell, one of the most popular posts about this calls otherkin furries and a lot of non-kin people were already confused about the difference. This is damage that can't be undone.

I'm just tired of my identity, the core of who I am, being treated like a quirky joke, and this did not help. I don't see how so many of us seem to be okay with this.

Also, I hate to break it to you, but there's been a well-known, popularly referenced meme specifically mocking otherkin and therians since 2013. A meme that was specifically fabricated from a documentary on nonhuman identities with the intent to mock them, if what interviews say are true. If Naia Okami's "On All Levels Except Physical, I Am A Wolf" meme didn't tank the community even after her doing alterhuman-focused interviews that referenced it for almost ten years after the fact, I think we'll be fine with this. Hell, what we're talking about here isn't even negative attention, and it's not even attention directly focused on us as a community, it's just adjacent! Maybe I have a thicker pelt than you, but this is seriously nothing comparatively to some of the things that have happened and been connected to the therian community in the past.

Anon, I don't know why on Earth you thought sending this in wouldn't spur an argument considering what you're saying is frankly insulting on multiple levels: to anyone who's actually done groundwork in the therian community, to plenty of us who were there during periods of time where media was being connected to the community in actually harmful and negligent ways (Wolfie Blackheart, Naia, etc.), to people who are openly a therian online and in their day-to-day life but don't make it a priority to try and be the therian's therian or anything ridiculous like that, to anyone who is "okay with this" as you put it. If you're meaning to ask more, "How can otherkin identify as other than human?" the answer is, "it depends on the otherkin!" Some otherkin explain their nonhuman identity in relation to their spiritual or religious beliefs; others believe it's something neurological or psychological that makes them feel nonhuman in some important capacity; still others might have entirely different opinions or explanations if you ask them, might have a combination of the mentioned, or they might just shrug their shoulders and tell you that they don't exactly know why they feel that they're nonhuman. Ask ten otherkin, get twelve answers, as the joke goes.

Re:less common kintypes. Fictionkin wise, i was a teal troll grub from homestuck, which may not sound rare but i say grub bc another, bigger wriggler killed me before we even got lusii (purple grub if ur out there Rude). I wasnt a canon troll or even an OC, i never got a chance to be anytinf.
