to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!

i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

I am 36 years old. I am deeply distressed by the fact that I am occasionally referred to as a "queer elder." First off because being referred to as an elder in any context ought to be a little bit embarrassing. Nobody worthy of the title wants it. I'm not a queer elder, but people do call me that sometimes.

The reason people call me that and the reason I'll talk about it now is that there are young queer people who literally don't know any queer people older than me, because so many of them were killed off young by the AIDS crisis. Half the community died in their 20s and didn't get a chance to make it to be in their 50s and 60s or older today. I know plenty of queer folks older than me, and I've talked to them about the AIDS crisis at length, but it's because I'm a community organizer.

The same proportion of people are queer in every generation. One generation was victim of an attempted genocide by Ronald Reagan.

clinical medicine is simple, basically the way it works is 99.999% of doctors don't know anything at all, so they only treat the 10–15 most common problems in their specialty. this might sound bad, but actually it's better, because 99.999% of patients don't have any complex medical problems anyway, which we know because they've never been diagnosed with anything except the 10–15 most common problems in the relevant specialty, because in order to be evaluated for something else they would have to be referred to one of the 0.001% of doctors who occasionally know something about some other condition, but they can't get that referral because they obviously don't need it because they've only been diagnosed with simple problems that the other 99.999% of doctors evaluate. so as U can see it's really about ensuring every patient gets the best possible care.

Have I talked about my ugly utopia idea on here yet? I don't think I have.

Basically, compare a suburban subdivision and the classic commie block. One is an expensive, very pretty hellscape, and the other is an ugly, barebones solution to a homelessness problem. Subdivision ticky tacky houses start falling apart the day they're built. Commie blocks built immediately post-ww2 are still being lived in. Density wise the commie block is incredible, while the subdivision is a laughingstock.

The future doesn't have to be pretty to take care of everyone. I want my ugly utopia.

Oh yeah definitely. A pretty future is possible. I'm just saying that I'll take "ugly and meets everyone's needs" over "pretty and there are people starving in the street."

Suburbs aren't even pretty. Those ticky tacky houses are ugly as fuck.

Also keep in mind that the "everyone" whose needs must be met by your utopia includes rural and disabled people. Which is not a "we shouldn't have public transportation because rural people need cars." It's remember that you can't ban cars outright unless your public transit will meet everyone in the country at their front door because disabled people in rural areas exist, and the practicality of public transit for people who live two hours from the nearest town is a major logistical problem that needs to be solved, and isn't even solved adequately by the current paradigm.

I can't drive because of my disability. I can't ride a bike, either. I live twenty miles from my grocery store. If your utopia doesn't help me get my groceries, it's not a utopia.
