I want to get away from advertising today and share with you guys a musical story.

I’m in my zone, and I was just in the mood to listen to some jams from my hs/college days. Some good ones scrolled through: Silverstein, A Plea for Purging, and then La Dispute.

A lot of ppl don’t like La Dispute, but man they were so different that it was hard for me not to like them.

Some friends and I went to watch the band Thursday at The Flytrap (now Whiskey 918) in Tulsa. I don’t really remember the first couple bands, but I remember there was one band left until Thursday came on.

First off, I really didn’t even want to go to this show. I wasn’t the biggest Thursday fan (not that they aren’t good), but my buddies really wanted to go and talked me into going.

So, I’m standing off to the back left of the stage because I’m not super interested at this point. I’ve got a great view of the stage. Then, the second to last band takes stage.

They start to play, and it’s like this melodic, spoken word, new punk sound just takes my ears from me. They owned the stage almost like gypsies, so emotionally attached to their music. The crowd was going bonkers, stage diving and jumping over top one another. The lead singer was just holding the mic out and they crowd wasn’t missing a beat, chanting along with every lyric during an instrumental break. They just blew me away.

As soon as they were done I had to know who they were. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Experiences like this are one of the many reasons I love music.

There are people who accomplish their dreams quickly, and then there are the rest of us. Most of us wake up with a desire to be something we aren't, but we live with what I call the 2%. We as humans are flawed in the fact that even the most devout of us have some sort of doubt. That little voice that tells us, "You can't do it.", or "That might be too hard". That little voice that is powered by dream killers like doubt and fear. So, how do we get it to stop? We don't! The best thing you can do is have COURAGE! Courage is the only defense against our dream killers! It takes courage to be who, and what, you want to be. You have to take that 2% once it crosses your mind and tell yourself, "I WILL BE COURAGEOUS, AND I WILL ACCOMPLISH MY GOALS!". You're stronger than you give yourself credit for. I heard something powerful yesterday.

"Don't let the devil keep you from your destiny."

I was listening to a little Inspirational service, but it applies to so much more.

When you surrender yourself to whatever it is that will take you in the right direction, your devil doesn't care.

The world, your addictions, your mental health, the devil himself... none of it will stop trying to keep you in that dark place it loves to dwell.

Life is a war, and you are meant for so much more than just living and dying.

I struggle constantly. Not knowing when I'm gonna get laid off (or where the next job will be), depression, stress eating, anger issues...

Hearing that though, it lit a spark.

I made promises to my wife, to get better. I made promises to myself to change. I have a beautiful daughter, and I owe it to her to do my best to get to a place I've never been.

I want to combine all the highs:

my mental health at it's peak

my physical health at it's peak

my spirit at it's peak

being the best father, brother, son, and friend I have ever been.

The journey had been slow these last few months, but it is picking up steam.

If you haven't heard it today, I love you. Don't let the devil keep you from your destiny.
